You Are Not Ready for Sons of the Forest...

Sons of the Forest is going to be one of the best survival games and is the successor to critically acclaimed survival game The Forest. It is important to take a moment and enjoy where we are at right now as a survival community. Many survival games have come out that just aren't good, but we play them anyways, and I am worried that we wont fully appreciate Sons of the Forest until its too late. Let's slow down and enjoy the process once it comes.

To be honest, I think what the biggest "fun factor" issue I have with the lower quality "junk" survival games is that they're all very grindy or just seem like you're managing your stats most of the time and only occasionally getting things done. What I like about the Forest is how it eliminates most of that. Gathering building materials is super easy and quick, as 98% of what you build is made of logs, and in a game called the forest, as expected there are trees everywhere, and they can be cut down in less than 5 seconds with the easily obtainable chainsaw item. Food and water sources are basically everywhere, and the campfires used to make them edible are extremely cheap and let you refill your hunger and thirst practically on the go. The combat is also very fluid and engaging compared to other survival games. In almost every other survival game I've played, the melee combat boils down to you hitting once, waiting for your weapon animation to finish while avoiding attacks, and then hitting again. It gets really boring really fast. In The Forest, however, one can keep hitting the attack button to essentially combo opponents. The strategy comes in when you are dealing with multiple targets (which is going to be most of the fights you get into) as you have to balance and keep track of all the enemies, making sure not to focus on just one target for fear of losing track of the others and getting attacked from behind.Also, in most survival games weapons are sorted by how good they are, with some weapons clearly better than others. In The Forest, every weapon is relatively as good as all the others, with lower damage weapons often having higher speed to ensure an opponent can't dodge mid-combo. Alternatively, slower weapons often have higher damage and higher block, giving them a more "tanky" playstyle. Even with these differences, the upgrade system (which unfortunately doesn't fully apply to all weapons) let's you change a weapons stats anyway, so if you enjoy the look of the modern axe, but play better with faster weapons, you can simply make the weapon swing faster at the cost of some damage. The Forest is a very well done game that I don't think the survival game fan base, as you said, appreciates as much as they may ought to.

I played and completed the Forest about three months ago.The story was great and I didn't know there was a sequel but when I heard about it I was so hyped for it! This sequel is one of the survival games that I am most excited for!

The Forest is like, the perfect game. It's so good at so many things, without managing to be bad at anything really. I think the engine and the crafting system were the only things that held it back. But how do you add that many mechanics to a game with a crafting system that is unique and not overly burdensome? How do you meld a cooperative survival experience into a compelling storyline, with tasks to complete (and reasons to complete them?). What they accomplished really was peak survival gaming, and they have set the bar impossibly high to try and meet... or exceed... the first. If anyone can do it, they've already proven they can. I think we're all in for a treat with this one.

Honestly you're right. The Forest is peak survival horror. It executes all survival elements like cooking, hunting, and base building excellently. But it also gives the players enough motivation to beat the game with a compelling storyline. This game is raising the bar, I'm calling it now.

I started playing the forest after I watched markiplier, and his friends bob and wade play it. It’s a fantastic game. I haven’t defeated mutant Megan yet but I’m getting better at it everyday. When sons of the forest comes out I will 100% play it.
