Measles - Warthin Finkeldey GC. ---------- *Metastatic vs Dystrophic calcification* The word metastasis is used in the context of cancer when it spreads, so metastatic calcification occurs when the whole body has high levels of calcium, due to high levels in the blood. Metastatic calcification can happen when the calcium level is elevated, for example, due to hormonal problems. The word dystrophy carries a sense of degeneration-dystrophic calcification occurs when calcium is deposited in cells that are about to die. Calcium, being a cofactor, can activate many enzymes, and these enzymes can lead to cell death. This is why calcium levels are generally very low in normal cells. However, when cells are about to die, the calcium level inside these cells increases. In rickets, due to a deficiency in calcium supply, the growing cells don’t die, so they protrude into the bone and cause cupping and splaying.
