This is the best info. I originally thought I would go panoptix but I'm glad I went mono yesterday. I had a hard time getting the right explanation of each. I didn't see this video but it gives me piece of mind I went the right way per your explanation. I wore glasses all my life. My glasses are providing so much safety from tree branches and different cleaning sprays that double back to hit the glasses. I want to wear glasses for the safety features. I still tinker around at 80yrs old. I can't even notice I had my first surgery yesterday except for the clear vision compared to my other eye. All my friends had the mono lens and are very happy. Mentioning pilots and perfectionist was all I had to hear.

This is the most helpful presentation I have seen in my online research. I recognized myself immediately in the reference to the 'perfectionist' and that made my decision so much easier.

Thank you for this video. You answered my question I had about the PanOptix lens and if I wanted them. I wanted to be able to not wear glasses but after watching this video I am going with the mono lens. I would rather have the good clear vision with the brighter contrast. I am more of a perfectionist and do some driving at night. Thank you so much for the examples and taking the time to put this presentation together.

Wow! Am I glad I stumbled onto this video! I had seen other videos from Dr. Devgan comparing two different brands of lenses, and another that said he would choose monofocal for his own eyes. Now I know exactly why he said that. As a 70 year old who flies RC planes as a hobby, I'm looking for the clearest distance vision possible. Wearing glasses for closer distances won't be an issue since I've been wearing them for the last 35 years anyway.

This is essential viewing for any patient wanting to make an informed decision about the IOL. None of the information discussed in this video was provided by the facility I visited for testing and preparation for a cataract surgery. The optician conducting the consultation didn’t provide a POV or ask questions that would help me make a decision and I’m glad I wanted to be informed. The billing department at the optical center were attempting to convince me the multi focal lens was the right choice without discussing my need, and that was a red flag to me. Thank you Doctor Devgan.

I got Cataract done for my both eyes with Dr. Anil Kumar in Secunderabad, India, he suggested mono focal as it is the best and I went with it, however when I asked him if I can have multi focal, so that my myopia also can be corrected, he said monofocal is best, and asked me to go through this post to understand the advantages of Monofocal over multi, I think he is correct. Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Thank you so much for your valuable Cataract Surgery Lens Implant Options! I just had an exam and given lens options with no explanation of lens, just cost as the outfit was pushing Laser options which are so expensive. No comparison or info on the different kinds of lens at all. I chose to go to another Surgeon for second opinion since I was so uncomfortable with the lack of information. My daughter was with me and feels the same. Appointment with the new Surgeon next Thursday, but this time I'm more informed and know what I want thanks to you! Again, thank you so much!!!

I am happy to say, my cataracts are not that bad yet at 66 y/o. THIS video made it VERY clear what the options were and why someone would choose one over the other. Thank you for this video. You gave me an understanding for pointing my Doc in the direction I would like to pursue. I wish you had added one more option to your "visual range" comparison ... "monovision with staggered Rx monofocal lens". I have had myopia since 2nd grade and used monovision in contacts since my 20s and now at 67 my cataract in my dominate right has made me go from -2.75 to -5.50. With glasses, I had single vision lens for distance and would look above (or below) my glasses to read. I think I will put a monofocal for distance in my dominate right and see how that works. If my left eye deteriorates, I'm hoping I can then use monovision for the left eye.

@@ashleyc7287 I have “chosen” distant vision and to bear glasses for near. I miss my near vision dearly. Like you I didn’t realize that 90% of my work is in near and intermediate vision. I should have chosen that and to wear glasses for driving. Make a good discussion with your cataract surgeon before you decide!

Dr. Devgan, I have watched this amazing video several times as I am planning to have cataract surgery at age 82. I am wondering how accurate the comparisons are between mono-focal and tri-focal implants. Are these exaggerations needed to show differences, or or these differences truly realistic, especially the night comparison?

Is there a way to test out the different lenses in advance by using a special contact lens that will simulate the experience of the installation?

The optical transfer functions for each lens type are documented. I would think a computer simulation with VR goggles could easily be made to allow a user explore an environment and switch between lens types to see the differences. Try it before you buy it.

I went with PanOptix had I seen this video b4 my surgery I’d have done mono focal I can tell I’ve lost clarity yes I can read better but not sure it’s worth the loss of clarity plus I’m out 5K not fully healed yet but I may still need readers anyway so what’s the point!? Thinking mb there’s an incentive for the Dr to upsell!
