Excellent presentation of this technique to update existing hollow core doors! This past spring we wanted to replace all of our doors professionally. For 20 doors, it would have cost over $12000.00. I used this method to update the existing doors and only spent just over $1200.00. (That's right, 1/10th of the replacement cost!) We did install new doorknobs, but were able to reuse the hinges, which I painted. We love how our "new" doors look!
@samuellourenco10503 ай бұрын
$1200 is still too expensive just for that. I did an entire oak bookcase with two shelves, to use on top of a desk, all made of solid white oak, and it cost me around $200, all materials included. Wood trim is cheaper than that.
@peterlandry11013 ай бұрын
The $1200 was mostly for the new doorknobs, but the rest was for the trim, primer, paint, wood filler, sandpaper, etc. Also, keep in mind that we refurbished 20 doors! Even "small stuff" adds up for that quantity. Glad your project turned out well too!

I was thinking about doing this with my older heavier more solid doors but wasn’t quite sure. This sealed the deal as I did repaint one of them and it came out great. I wasn’t sure if the trim sticking out from the door would look right but now I’m sure I’m rehabbing all doors and doing this update. Smelly Door - sand and prime with KILZ. Works great at removing any Smokey or funky smells from the older door. I use two coats. I used a sand paper grit that was pretty aggressive. Can’t recall the fact fact number but it should be for refinishing Assembly - I always dry fit after cutting and would suggest beginners use tape to hold in place before gluing and nailing. I don’t think caulking the edges is necessary but that’s another step I guess. Great video! I wish I would do the same but I really don’t understand how to do that while working and trying to concentrate. Hi Folks, I've answered some common questions in this comment... Primer to allow a water-based paint to be applied over an oil-based finish - amzn.to/2ObvvKe Semi-gloss white paint (water-based) - amzn.to/3r7NVdk My doors were original to my house (1948) and were originally finished with an oil-based clearcoat. In order to paint them with modern water-based paints I needed a special primer that is designed to be used over oil-based finishes. As is typical before any painting, I lightly sanded the whole door to provide a rougher surface for the primer to adhere to. The primer was applied to the whole door and allowed to dry overnight. The primer is quite thin, so a second or third coat may be needed to achieve better coverage. Once the primer is dry it is then safe to apply your water-based paint of choice. How do you know if you have an oil-based paint or finish on your doors? - You can do a simple adhesion test which is basically a scratch test. Put a little latex paint on a piece of trim in an inconspicuous spot, let it dry overnight, and try to scratch it off with your fingernail. If the paint comes off easily, it's very likely an oil-based finish. If it's hard to remove, you're good to continue painting. - Or, if you have a can of acetone simply apply some to a rag or cotton ball and rub an area where you think oil paint might be present. If the paint softens or comes off on the rag it’s latex (water-based). If it stays hard and nothing happens it’s oil based paint. - Or, instead of acetone you can also use rubbing Alcohol, which is kept in most household medicine cabinets. If you do not have any rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover will also do the trick. If you choose to use nail polish remover make sure to check the bottle first. If it says "Acetone Free" it will not work. I hope this helps, please feel free to comment or reply and I'll add to this comment as needed.

Love your video!! Your video is so inspiring and to the point. My daughters and I are going to attempt this project while they are on break from school. Would you please tell me how many inches you suggest that I go in from the sides of our doors? Our doors are 79.5" x 30". Do I want to keep the dimensions from the top and sides the same, like you did and just make the horizontal pieces longer? Thanks for your help.
@PatonHaus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim, as you've likely already noticed my door was 24" wide, and only a bit shorter than yours at roughly 77". You could certainly make the horizontal pieces longer to suit your wider door. My "rectangles" were 15" wide, the top one being 24" tall and the bottom one being 31" tall. Your door is only slightly taller than mine so you could make some minor adjustments there as well. With your door you should be able to use 21" long horizontal pieces, and maybe 25" tall for the top rectangle, and 32" for the bottom. My only concern is that the top rectangle might look closer a square with those dimensions being so close to one another (21" x 25"), so perhaps you could make the horizontal pieces 20" wide instead? The distance from the top and edge of the door is just the leftover width divided by 2. In my case the door is 24" wide, minus the horizontal wood length of 15", so I measured in 4.5" from the edge. I also measured in 4.5" from the top, so these two measurements should match. The distance leftover at the bottom is not important and will end up being whatever dimension is left over. A quick way to see how it will look is just using blue painters tape to layout the sizing. If it looks right you can jump right into cutting the wood. Remember, measure everything from the top of the door as the bottom might be cut to suit the floor, which may not be level or straight. Good luck!

@@PatonHaus Thank you so much for your reply. I used my kids' white chalk to layout the panels. If I didn't like my layout, I just took a wet paper towel to it and tried again. I tried several different scenarios. I decided to make the dimensions to scale of your project. So I did 18" wide. I subscribed to your channel and am excited to see what else we can learn from you. Thanks again.

Wow, such a great video. I would like to do this, because replacing my ugly 1963 hollow core doors is extremely out of my budget. I am a novice. How did you select the trim? I noticed there appeared to be two identical looking trims on the store shelf, but you picked the $12.xx over the $1.99. I know there is a reason Just curious what it is!
@PatonHaus2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it may not be clear in the video but the $1.99 tag is a price per foot, meaning the same 8 foot length would cost $16. Buying a pre-cut 8’ length for $12.69 is the more cost effective option. If you had very tall doors then you may need to buy it by the foot to ensure you’re getting one full length instead of having joints in the wood. Hopefully that answers your question. 👍

I'm getting into real estate investment. I was just watching a training where the guy was saying that he had a house with slab or panel doors and he didn't want the expense of replacing them all to make the house look better. My attitude is that something like this increases the perceived value and will at least make the house sell faster, if not for more money. Even 1 month of holding cost when you are doing a fix-n-flip can be several hundred dollars. It doesn't take much time, you probably need to take most of the doors off their hinges anyway to paint everything, so why not spend $5 a door and give them a treatment like this and make that first and lasting impression of the house a good one?

What is the material of this door? Plywood or solid teekwood?

Please can you tell me the suitable decorative moulding sizes which is suitable for 33 x 80 inch door. (I asked about the 3 sizes of decorating mouldings which use to make 2 rectangles)

Hi there, if you watch portions of the video again you’ll see clips of the measurements of my door. If you just add the difference in size to my measurements you’ll end up with what you need. Otherwise just eyeball it, you can make yours look however you want 👍

Do you think sanding and staining old doors like this would work okay?
@PatonHaus2 жыл бұрын
Sure, but if they’ve already been finished with a clearcoat or paint you’ll have to remove all of the old finish before applying the new stain.
