Joe is 100% wrong regarding the college situation, while Ish is correct. I can't fault his ignorance since he didn't graduate high school. That comment wasn't meant to demean him, however it shows a lack of understanding regarding the importance of education in the lives of regular working class people. It surprises me since he has a college age child (Trey) that he put in school. Sometimes we forget to place ourselves in others situations. Selecting the right school can change a student's life and career trajectory. Those parents stole countless opportunities from people who NEEDED it. Simply because of greed and their fear of public shame due to their children's inability to perform on the same level as their peers. Creating generational nepotism in the education system and various industries in corporate America.

I am completely shocked at some of these comments regarding education. If you listen to Joe you'll have a hard way to go. He doesn't live in reality at all and it's unfortunate that some of these young people are taking what he has to say as bible. Entrepreneurship is cool, and great if you're successful but it's the people who work in spaces such as medical, construction, truck drivers, manufacturing....and so on ...who buy the merch or whatever they are selling to make a profit off of the podcast, music or whatever they are doing. Also, I don't want someone doing a surgery on me unless they have been to the best college or providing any service for that matter without the best possible knowledge. Everybody can't be entrepreneur likewise everybody can't be a doctor or nurse or whatever. Man....we have to do better. Like seriously. I'm scared of the future.

100%. When wealthy connected parents arrange to having a fake proxy test taker do the SATs and ACTs for their entitled children and falsify athletic credentials to get them into academically superior schools on special merit based sports scholarships THEN it hits home. It could cost YOUR kid the chance to snag the one basketball full ride available for the upcoming year. For some kids that UCLA scholarship is their only ticket to college period due to their financial reality. The wealthy family can financially access many other college options that their kids actually qualify for.

OK so here is my experience with choosing a school for your kids. Most people will not agree, BUT what I have learned is the perfect school starts with where you live. If you live in an affluent area, most times the schools are equivalent to private schools believe it or not. For example, I live in GA. The county I live in considered one of the more affluent in the Atlanta Metro area. Most people move to my county because we are known for having very good public schools that have the same level of curriculum as a private school would have. However, when I first moved to GA and lived in one of the poorer parts of the ATL Metro, I felt like my kids were in jail. The teachers were rigid, did not promote free thought, and the entire approach to teaching was different than what my kids receive in the school system they've been in for the last seven years. I moved to the other side of town after two months, and My kids are taught about real estate, stocks, finances, my daughter who is now 18 and in college had an opportunity to go to LA for a Stem program at UCLA prior the pandemic, my son knows how to operate and produce an entire news broadcast because the school has good tech teachers that train them how to produce and record and edit. He's 16 and many of his friends have businesses,. One friend built an app at 15 and now has investors that invest into the app, which is doing well. The school has a program that will train kids to become Microsoft Certified Engineers by age 17. They have coding classes where students actually can learn to code. There are a plethora of extra curricular activities from gardening club to anime club. They are among a more diverse group of kids, so different ideologies and cultural beliefs are more tolerable and they are more cultured than kids who go to typical public schools. You don't always have to spend thousands to place your kid in school. Just make sure you choose a neighborhood where your tax dollars are spent well and shows in the public school system there. In my county houses are more expensive simply because people will move here and pay more just to get in the school system for their kids. They will buy at 2500 square ft home with no amenities, not even an acre of land, and on a main street just to ensure their kids have a good learning environment. It makes a huge difference.

I loved college too! It also changed my mindset. My initial plan was to work in a government agency. It was my professor that told me that I was basically too much of a leader and forward thinking to go and work as a gov worker. She changed my thinking and being around people from all walks of life, really helped me be able to assimilate better into society with multiple races. Being raised in Bmore, I was not exposed to certain ways of living beyond the normal ghetto stories. College really helped me expand my knowledge. I even learned The Bible and my understanding of religion and spirituality was expanded. It was in college, I realized that I grew up in church but I was never taught the Bible properly. It really changed my life and honestly my income tripled by obtaining a degree. Prior to college, I would get turned down for so many roles where I knew the work, but didn't have a degree so I would not get the roles I wanted.

Loved the education conversation…Joe, the research that you cited about curricula that is not relevant to students’ lived experiences was likely written by someone with an advanced degree. School is not for everyone and we should always be interrogating what and how well our children are being taught, but schooling serves individuals and communities in valuable ways. The challenge is making your education do what you need it to do for you….

Interesting convo on education. One of the things I think what they’re failing to realize is that certain institutions are necessary because they abide by agreed upon standards to teaching. That’s why you have certain accreditations. There has to be a standard upheld for holding higher institutions accountable. You can get great information from the web, but learning certain intricate details of dangerous fields require things are not left up to chance
