Steve Winwood is an excellent musical rabbit hole to dive into. My favorite solo song is "While You See A Chance" from his first solo album, Arc Of A Diver. The title song is pretty good, too. My fave song ever of his is "Gimme Some Lovin'" from his days in the Spencer Davis Group. His super soulful vocals carry that song.

I totally forgot that album, but it's great!

Yes, "While You See A Chance" is amazing. I have been known to put it on repeat for hours. Although I am always struck by the contrast between his really good music, lyrics, and vocals and the amusingly bad quality (by modern standards) of the visuals of many of his music videos. I suppose it's because of the era in which they were produced, but still...

Steve Winwood came up in 60s Britain as a musical prodigy, playing keys in Spencer Davies Group at 16 years old. But where his contemporaries were preoccupied with the blues, he had an affinity for soul, (perhaps because he played keys and not the guitar). Which this track obviously is an example of, beneath the very 80s production. And of course the backing vocals ooze with soul, it's the queen herself ms Chaka Khan doing them. You can even see glimpses of her in the video.

When this came out in 1986(?), it spent a lot of time in heavy rotation on my car stereo cassette. The studio version of the song has back up and harmony vocals featuring the inimitable Chaka Khan. Lately, Steve Winwood has done backup vocals with his daughter Lilly singing the lead. Very nice as well!
@lamusiclover2264Күн бұрын
You may know this song because they released a version by Whitney Houston that was previously unreleased, and it was remixed and updated. On this version, Chaka Khan is doing the background vocals!! She is in the official video, This isn't the official video.

It has a little hint of a gospel song in its sound. I love both versions of it.

Great reaction, Brit! This song was out during Steve's solo period. Prior to that time, he was in several GREAT bands going back to the 60s: The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic.
@matthewdooley785519 сағат бұрын
You definitely need to check out early Steve Winwood. He was in the band Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, and as a teen, "Can't Find My Way Home" sounded like it was a song from a grizzled, worn out man. This iteration of Winwood sort of reminds me of Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates.

When I saw "early Steve Winwood" I immediately thought of the band Traffic, whin - in turn - made me thing of "The Low Spark ofHight Heeled Boys". It's a vibe...

Whitney Houston covered this song as a duet with Kygo. Possibly where you've heard it. Also, if you like a female percussionist singing, check out Shelia E.

Before watching your reaction to this one, I know from watching you for a good period, you will absolutely love this track and add it to your Playlist His island themed sound, and spiritual message are right in your comfort zone If you want to check out his early work, go to songs by his former band's, Spencer Davies group, & TRAFFIC Just as Eric Clapton's early guitar work can be heard on songs by CREAM

Steve Winwood has been a musical influence since the mid-sixties, originating in England. He started out with the Spencer Davis Group, in 1963, when he was 15 years old. When he was 18 he co-founded the group "Traffic." "Blind Faith" came next, followed by "Blind Faith" in 1969 with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. He finally went solo in '77 and with each group he found massive success. Songs to check out next: "I'm A Man", "Gimme Some a Lovin'", "Mr. Fantasy", "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", "Can't Find My Way Home", Valerie" "Arc of a Diver" and the list goes on. Steve Winwood has a deep rabbit hole to explore.
Glad to see you are still duelling with the head cushion on your headphones. The cushion seems to be winning😂

Britt, Whitney Houston did a cover of this song for the "I'm your baby Tonight" album 1990. But, it was only a bonus track on the "Japanese" release. And then later in 2019, it had a Dance Re-Mix by DJ Kygo. You might have heard that one also. KZbin search Whitney Higher love. 😉👍

No one else sings this that I know of, this is all Steve Winwood, one of his biggest solo hits. Chaka Khan on background vocals adds a great touch on the album version. Steve Winwood is a true LEGEND! His vocals are immediately recognizable. This video is actually lip synced to the album version and not a true live video.

Britt, You may like Bobby Darin. Popular in the 50’s & 60’s . He was Super Cool; like a young Frank Sinatra. He sided at 37 in 1973. Songs to try …Mac the Knife, Beyond the Sea, & Dream Lover are my favorites.
