Thanks for the awesome video, I was extremely inspired! The way you’re mastering the bass makes it sound like you have freed and allowed the bass to express its own voice. I’m about to start learning the bass to play these types of classic funky tunes and I had made my mind up to buy a 4 string bass until I heard your playing. I understand that the 5 string is essential in some genres (gospel etc) but would you still recommend a 5 string if someone is primarily interested in playing funk and would someday love to get to this level? Also, can you give me an idea of how much time and practice it took you to reach this level (or it would take if you were to start again with the right guidance)?

@travisfreccia1420 @travisfreccia1420 Honestly speaking you don't NEED a 5 string to play funk. It just adds depth in some aspects. A lot of the funk songs I play I rarely touch the B string. However, as you stated with gospel yes that's a different thing where that low B is used quite often. In terms of if I'd recommend a 5 over 4 I'd say it depends on your commitment and what genres you plan on playing. And I've been playing for 14yrs, I went through the "School Of Hardknocks" though lol. The guy who was mentoring me at the church I attended ended up getting a spinal injury that caused him to not be able to play for almost a year. So while I was only a year into learned I was pretty much forced to have to be the main bassist at a church that had an average attendance of about 3k-4k per Sunday. So I had to learn FAST and definitely made a lot of mistakes and got chewed out along the way. However I wouldn't change the way my journey has gone for nothing. I'd do it all the same way again.....One important lesson that was taught to me was "You can play all the right notes but if your feel is off everything your doing is all for nothing". And when it comes to feel or expression that's something that can't be taught it's something you develop along your journey. It's basically your own unique voice and you use that voice to make the song come alive. So find your voice once you get all the basics down man that's what I'd recommend over anything else
