I like how Bryce and Van Patten talk to Bateman nicely and atleast recognise him but he's not secure enough to make friends with them. (Not counting Louis since he was being nice due to being sexually interested in Bateman) And Bateman does have a unique distinguishing personality in his appreciation of good music, but he never mentions it to anyone except if he's about to murder them.
@imafirinmahlazahr2 жыл бұрын
But even Bateman's appreciation of good music seems robotic. He sounds like he's just reciting things he's read about it.
@nyx3482 жыл бұрын
@@imafirinmahlazahr yess. every kind of knowledge is kind of “empty” knowledge. idk if it makes sense but it seems like he sat down and started memorizing the things just to be able to use it in very unnecessary moments. it was the same with the knowledge abt clothes. he had so much knowledge literally everyone asked him when it came to stuff like that yet it was just so “fake”. for me personally nothing mirrors his personality better than those 2 things
@rballack13192 жыл бұрын
@@nyx348 I think he's being as genuine as he can be so it's not 'fake' in the sense that it's consciously contrived, I would say 'lacking' is the better word to use, he's lacking the dimensions you'd associate with a developed opinion on something he thinks he likes just like he's lacking dimensions to his persona: "There is no me". It's more of a defensive mechanism, in the scene with the two prostitutes his utter powerlessness in all things that matter from the prostitute arriving with the wrong hair to his obvious lack of ability to communicate with and win the respect or attention of a woman. His failure at this social level precedes his 'descent' into the emotionless critique of music, to sexuality, to violence. His only moment of compatibility is as a baseless sexual entity, his physical fitness and healthy lifestyle make him perform well sexually and only in this moment can he satisfy himself with himself, thus rewarding the basest primal instinct sexuality which sits next to aggression and violence. When Louis peels back his glove and kisses his wrist and then says "he has a hot body" - it's an unfortunately and unintentionally destructive moment, to be ostensibly valued on the basis of aesthetic rather than the real. It's kind of confirmation of his lack of soul. He washes his gloves but not where he was actually touched, the unfortunate encounter has left it's mark and the only thing he can think to do is to re-assemble his ego and go back out as if nothing's happened. He doesn't know how to form his own opinion about things because, I will hypothesize, you develop a sense of 'opinion' by first understanding other people and how they perceive things and then facilitating the necessity to create disagreement forging an articulated point of view - but first you need to have a capacity for empathy to understand other people and how/ why they're invested in what they think they have an interest in which Bateman objectively isn't because he does not value life, or 'real living' I should say. How this idea correlates with the business cards is not clear to me at this point. Kind of reminds me of Antony Joshua - he is trying to be human, but the more he tries the more his pathology stands out. It's like the opposite of the Tinman without a heart in the Wizard of Oz. He does soulless work and so he is soulless. His lifestyle and his environment are kept to a pristine and sterile standard, almost hermetically-sealed both internally and externally - no signs of anybody but him influencing what exists in his apartment. This is the only thing we can control, and all he has is contol so he'll be tyrannical with it as a matter of dependency, the only real meaningful occupation he has to shield himself from the impossibility of a full-fledged exposure to chaotic reality. The scene with Louis and the 'murder gone sexual' tells all. Bateman isn't used to being touched affectionately, he's more comfortable with confrontational contact which is why he's so quick and casual with the "touch me again and you'll draw back a stump" remark. The interaction unites him with a sense of self he does not have regular contact with explaining how he consciously withdraws from his environment and becomes focused on some internal schism, and becomes almost like a petulant teenager with the 'What is it!' response. His emotional repression becomes evident at that point; his absent humanity comes to the fore with his desire not to hurt Louis' feelings or imply his sexuality or preference is improper.
@rballack13192 жыл бұрын
Louis' attraction is a hard one to categorize. It's hard to imagine he found elements of his surface personality attractive since there isn't one. He remarks about him having a hot body, but everyone in Bateman's circle does since they're pretty much carbon copies of each other, with the exception of Bateman's desire to 'become a real boy' which is the driving force behind his nihilistic fantasies. It feels as though Louis is sensitive to this as well as Bateman's lack of rejection of his sexuality. It seems more like he wants to help Patrick than be a lover to him but he himself is confused by his attraction.
@nyx3482 жыл бұрын
@@rballack1319 i put fake into those " thingies cuz i couldn't find a better word (sorry english's not my first language) but I essentially agree with u. I too think this is his level of "being human". He obv doesn't think like the average person nor seems to entirely understand one to the level of being able to interact with them properly so he uses that "empty knowledge" to fit in and a lot of the times it seems to work for him. He somehow has a contradicting personality in my opinion. I mean on the one side he's putting up that boy-next-door persona, though does seem kinda bothered by other people's perception of it, but on the other hand towards the end, he wasn't really that ruthless killer either anymore. I'm not saying he changed entirely or started being an empathetic person but he kind of "lost it" and even that persona of his seemed kind of forced like he was confused abt his identity even more than b4. I don't know if the things I said make much sense, I haven't watched the movie or read the book in forever but these are the things I remeber thinking and then there's obv the language barrier but yeah I agree with u. Also I think many of his insecurities and doubts abt himself come from the position of his father in the company.

Miles Fisher's cover of "This Must Be the Place" is the final perfect form of this story. I also think most of the story is just Patrick Bateman's version of counting sheep and he's never lifted a finger of murder until after the story ends...
