In India, security regulation ensures that 15% of any IPO has to be available to retail investors (defined as accounts that invest less that USD 2700 approx). Even still most investors do not get any shares (since the retail portion of any ipo is often 10x oversubscribed) but atleast some lucky investors do get shares at the ipo price.

Have seen IPO`s over the last few years including Uber and was right when after the first day the share price plummets ... IPO`s never seemed to make sense to me .. even after nearly buying a space-ex ipo, when i asked if Starlink will be included to which the broker said it was when i knew that it will be listed as a separate entity and when i called the broker out he hung up..

thank you for the content. I would love to hear more on these wealthy investors which investment banks provide some of the deals which are not provided to retail investors. Another example is the convertible bonds that CS recently offered. Questions that come to mind are: why only them ? how are these clients selected ? how much money you need to have ? what is their strategy ? how do they move money ? what else is special about them ?

I think fidelity and other retail brokers already offer access to their retail clients (or more as you mention to ask for the shares they are assigned), and it is even not uncommon in other places like Europe/UK.
@PBoyle3 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is that the other brokers pick who to give shares to. Robinhood say that they will give everyone who applies shares, even if they are only fractions of shares. That is what they are claiming anyhow, we will have to see how it goes.

Rebate and flow as well as marginal lending are their main cash flow. Retail investors should caution about the narrative of close to zero trading fees.Please note that Robinhood was in fact paying $65 million penalty to resolve the regulator's charges. Everyone should pay close attention on their misconduct.

Could the IPO price be lower due to retail investors not being able to partake in them? Retail investors not being part of IPO means that the demand is lower while the supply remains the same, which in basic economics would mean that price would go down. So after IPO is finished and more demand is allowed, it is not a big surprise that the price would rise. It's just basic economics. Seems a bit unfair.

IPO's are overpriced as a group. IPO's drastically underperform the market over their first three year period. This is true even though as a group IPO's pop the first day If an IPO goes up 20x over the next three years, no one is more surprised than the founder's of the firm as why would they knowingly bring their company public at such a steep discount?

Robinhood asks for permission from investment banks to sell shares at IPO access prices? Does Robinhood want to borrow the keys to the car too? IPO access for retail investors of crap stocks, or dare I say 2021 "junk" stocks. Valuation is not "money on the table." This just seems to all come down to risk mitigation. The market cannot be predicted, but it can be analyzed. Thanks to Patrick. Cheers.

I am surprised that Robinhood thinks that it can be trusted. They appear to have no backup system for their trading app, and when it crashed, users/investors lost the ability to trade. There is funny fallacy in minute 12:37. It is argued that the theory that strict laws in America cause IPOs to pop is disproved by seeing the same phenomenon in countries without a string regulatory environment. That's a fallacy, as the argument should show that other countries *with* strict laws don't display the same behaviour. Maybe the theory still has some merit.
