Also, wanted to thank you a lot for your work on creating this very good video and sharing with lot of authenticity your story. Thanks a lot and wish you lot of success in your further projects Patrick. Cheers!

Hey Olivier! I am super stoked you liked the video! Yes, ironman was a very humbling experience and i am truly grateful for it. Great video! I was also in that same race (IM Tallinn 2020), and went through some very similar experiences, so the things you shared about your race had very special meaning for me and stirred up some memories. Being shell-shocked by the water temperature and non-transparency, fighting just to survive the swim; being in near-hypothermic state afterwards, feeling devoid of power in my legs first to fight the headwind, and then also stopping way too frequently for the sanitary break (yes, even this!); feeling almost festive to finally hit the run course, just to run into the gastro difficulties after 2 laps; yes, the rain and the puddles and the wind and the cold!; and in the end - the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment, making it absolutely worth all the effort spent on that long day :) Hope you enjoyed the race, and good luck in the next ones!

Congratulations for your Ironman achievement. I had hypothermia earlier this year on the bike after being caught in an unexpected hail storm and persistent rain. My body temp dropped and resulted in confusion and uncontrollable shivering for over an hour, until I was able to get somewhere warm to get my wet things off. The thought of suffering that during an Ironman or a shorter race is something I don’t want to consider! Kudos.

The key to the marathon is to get out of T2 before you really realize that you are about to run a marathon. and never stop moving forward. If you can't run, jog. If you can't jog, walk. You can always walk.

Congrats on completing ironman!! Love the super honest approach, feel i've gained a deeper understanding of what ironman should be all about, more from your video than a lot of other videos combined. The part about ironman being more about the experience and journey really resonated with me. As you said, it is not about the time you finish in, more about learning about yourself and personal growth (as well as survival!). Hope to complete my first marathon this year followed by an ironman next year, can't wait for my own journey like this! All the best mate, from Leeds UK.

Bella Patrick!

Awesome recollection. I had similar unknowns on my race day at IMNZ19. I couldn't site properly in my swim due to crazy sun strike so definitely swam a zig zag race. My strongest is cycling but at the 130k mark - I had to dismount and walk a few 100mtrs. I had done the cycle distance in training and its still beyond me why that (stoppage) had to occurred. I was good for a 30-35k run, and was banking to fake the rest. As soon as I started running out of the bike to run transition, my entire body just said 'not today sunshine'. I ran 10k in total and walked the rest. Not at all what I had planned but I knew I had the time to be able to walk the distance. All of my preparation/training could not of forewarned me how my race-day would unfold. Coming down the finishing shoot, I let people pass me to ensure I had 'that' moment I'd worked so hard for - all to myself. I'd seen photos of people crossing the finish line with other competitors obstructing their one and only photo finish photo. I needed to be photo finish free (turns out it was ugly anyway) and hear the voice of Mike Reilly call my name. The red carpet zone (or the finishing shoot) in NZ is a party zone and it was a privilege to be apart of that celebration coming in. 10% family and friends - 90% total strangers cheering you on.

2021 is "recovery" with a view to 2022. Just one comment, I always try to test the water conditions beforehand. There are so many more influences on the swim course (visibility, waves, drift, orientation, temperature, wind, etc.) than for example on the cycling or running course. :)
@PatrickDelorenzi
@PatrickDelorenzi 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Axel! Thank you for the input, much appreciated and you are 100% right. Not testing the swim venue was a big mistake; I did not test it because knowing the water temp was going to be pretty cold, and having had a bad experience in training in a cold lake that left me sick for 4 days with a cold, I couldn’t risk getting sick just before the race! Especially with temp checks and all the extra precautions they were taking for Covid. The year before for IM 70.3 Italy I had tested the swim course and it was very useful on race day for sighting and general confidence - next race 100% will test the swim venue as it can have so many variables like you said 👌👌

Here in Toronto (sounds almost like Torino!) our open-water season is mid-June to mid-September so at the shoulders we get used to cold water-but like you I think I'd be fully hypothermic after 3.8 km in such cold water.

It's called gastro problems, welcome to IM :) "Pain in your kidneys" is most likely common gastro distress. It happens when there are too many particles in your stomach compared to how much blood is located to the system (I'm not a doctor by any means, so when i say stomach here it might be intestines, who cares). So when you get the pain it's most often a wrong balance in the stomach or to little blood to handle the content. So you can 1) slow down, then the body allocates more blood to your digestive system or 2) feed it less 3) feed it fewer particles e.g. more simple processed stuff (often carbs), simple stuff (fructose etc) contains less energy but are easier to digest. Normally what people do is to slow down a little and drink cola. Cola actually makes it worse since it adds more stuff but again you need to drink and eat something and then cola is one of the easiest to digest sugars, that's why it's so popular on races. A gel for example contains a mix of different kinds of sugars and candy are of course even more complex.... think about what a steak would do to the system. So try to learn from the "mistake", what caused the distress, it takes a long time to find your favourite carb that your system can process fast and that is effective for you. And lastly, the "unable to push the pulse higher" is a clear sign that you have run out of carbs, your breathing tends to go up (fat takes more oxygen to burn) and the pulse goes down, can't really do anything here other than to eat whatever you can (careful, think about the stomach) and settle in on the new lower pace, if your lucky you can catch a "second wind" but i mean, if your out your out. Great vid.! well done on the racing!

Hey Per! Thank you so much for this comment, i truly appreciate it! Wow man, thank you for the explanation. 100% that's what happened, and I actually did try for a bit to stop eating during the run and have some water (if i remember correctly half a loop). For sure I will learn from my mistakes! I believe they served a purpose, even the fact of receiving your comment : ) Thank you so much

@@PatrickDelorenzi glad you picked up something from it. But be sure to read more on the subject, how ever reading is one thing, racing is another. I think that's one of the things I love the most about endurance racing, the lessons you can only gain on a race, you can't fully simulate it on training. Actually i don't think you did a mistake at all, you gained experience. I make many "misstakes" on every race still but that's part of the fun to analyze and think how you can improve on stuff... equipment, execution, nutrition or training or whatever. I wanna race noooow!! I have so much new stuff i have improved :)

I was also there doing a 70.3. It was close to 10 degrees celcius in the morning when I woke up. Our start was about 45 minutes before yours. Chilly. The water was cold that it sapped a lot of energy. I concur with everything, could not see anything in the water, could not see or follow anyone, and it was quite dark as well so it was hard to see the turns. I am not a good scouter so I had problems going straight, and I saw people going totally the wrong way (90 degrees wrong way). Luckily I had a neoprene cap but no booties. Also I have quite more fat than you, but I think I failed to dry myself completely with a towel after I got out so I was freezing on the bike and I put a lot of clothes for the bike.
