Egret II mini and the upcoming Batocera release makes it the only one to get. Transforming screen, switchable joystick 4/8. Sega Astro City is now only for the hardcore Sega Fans who wants it for only these official games. I can't wait for Batocera to come to these devices, so we can add better games, get rid of Japanes versions of games etc. Good times ahead.

Mine arrived in the post the other day, I love the music to the menu it's a wonderful love letter to Vertical Shooters of last century. I use the Astro City Mini Fight Stick to play so I never play it on the main unit. The menu mini music is a joy to listen to coming out of proper speakers. I people complained of lag, but honestly it's not game breaking and it's a solid unit to play imo.

I’m such a sucker for these things. I saw the earlier reviews showing lag, so I wrote it off. It’s pretty funny that it was a power issue.. I mean… 🙄 lol. I may look into this one now. Thanks for the review.

Fun fact: a company called Zuiki has had a hand in making a lot of these mini consoles. Astro City, Egret, Genesis, Game Gear, Turbo GFX, and soon the X68000 Z. (Taken from watching old MLP video)

One of the issues with the first Astro City Mini was that most USB controllers actually weren't compatible with it. Aside from the official ACM pads & sticks the only other models which I could confirm to work are the Mega Drive Mini 6-button pads, and even then only the official Sega JP pads not the 8-bitDO ones.

I picked one up from Amazon Japan a few months back. I wish there was a source for the base. I had one ordered from Amazon but the order was cancelled and now it’s not in stock. Not a huge deal but they are hard to come I guess due to limited production.

What’s funny about all these reviews is no one has mentioned the small text above the joystick that says “stereo of the art sound”. 😂 I know what they intended to say but it’s funny it goes unnoticed.

Yeah this is pretty cool but big problem for those looking to play via game pad as they’re nowhere to be found at retail. That means no simultaneous 2 players or using game pad when connected to monitor via HDMI. Nice thinking there LRG

There’s a Reddit post that lists the usb controllers that work with these. Surprisingly, most do not. I went down a deep rabbit hole last year trying to get a Legends Gamer Pro to work with it so I could play a close-to-arcade perfect version of Virtua Fighter on my arcade unit.

There is an arcade joystick that was released with the first Astro City Mini you can use. I have it and it works great. Actually I could say that joystick thingy is the best thing that came out of making this systems. Is very nice to use.

I look forward to getting this one, especially since it has very good shmups. And if you have a Taito Egret II Mini, it opens up the opportunity of head to head competitions with Truxton. And speaking of the Egret, like that unit, the ACM V provides people an opportunity to play a game that wasn't widely released to the public, which in this case is the Mercs like Desert Breaker which was supposed to be released to the public, only to be scrapped halfway (the game ends after the 3rd stage). Asides from Truxton and Desert Breaker, the other games I look forward to playing on the ACM V includes Action Fighter which I'm familiar with due to the Sega Master System version, Cosmo Police Galivan which is a must play if you're a fan of the Metal Heroes tokusatsu series which led to the creation of VR Troopers, and especially Wrestle War which does feature parodies of actual wrestlers such as Jason the Terrible and Hulk Hogan (whom Titan Morgan was a parody of because he originally had blonde hair, only to be recolored to brown to avoid legal problems).

@@PDubsArcadeLoft which is why I just got the base system only and not with the controllers. As for the portability, they are amazing. I often bring my Astro City Mini to Universal Orlando with me (I often alternate between the ACM and the Egret each time I visit), where it's often a conversation piece with other guests when I play it at Finnegan's or the annual passholder lounge.

Like the other guy said, looks like severe lag to me at 3:52. Play it back at 0.25 speed at it's quit obvious. The lag is going to kill us in the more advanced levels where precision and quick reflexes matter.

There is absolutely lag, and it varies quite a bit between games. Some are equivalent to the lag on the original AC mini and egret mini II, while the newer titles honestly have really bad delay. It doesn't have anything to do with which charger you use. I've had a lot of fun with mine, and play the Toaplan games quite often, but I honestly don't bother with the newer titles. Batrider/Bakraid are not enjoyable to me with this much lag.
