I saw him last night in Seattle. It was an acoustic show so I didn't think he would do this one. But some how they made it work with only a guitar, viola and oboe (I think it was an oboe). Beautiful!

I don't think that's the best explanation. I think it's more about the fact that Patrick is more willing to explore sounds outside the original genres and styles that got him noticed. If anything, I think it's a sign of artistic integrity rather than "selling out" or whatever the snobby people call it nowadays.
