When I was in grade school (I'm 74 yrs old), for fun, I'd learn the states and their capitals. Then, I'd list them alphabetically, and finally in alphabetical order, but from z to a instead of a to z.

Yeah the UP is connected to Wisconsin and should still be part of Wisconsin if the politicians hadn't gave it away as part of a deal to appease Michigan. Makes sense that people think its part of WI, because it is.

The thing to do is practice by drawing the map from scratch on a blank sheet of paper and labeling it. When you can get them all that way, versions like this are a cakewalk.

About 7-8 years ago, a study was done of American middle school kids' geographical knowledge about the USA, & 60% of them didn't even know the capitals of their own states. @Kovitlac Easiest way to pin 'em down is to use mnemonics, like this fellow does - like what shape does the state remind one of, which state's next to which, etc. Hope you can visit the northeast sometime, my friend. Most Americans have had to memorize the states and the capitals in school and a whole lot of other rote learning (like the Presidents in order, all the various dates of wars and battles, the Preamble to the Constitution, etc.). But you don't retain information unless you use it or it's otherwise important to you. It's how the brain works. No amount of educational reform is going to change that.

I've been to 32 states so far and always get confused with the Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama string down in the south. Over 6 or 7 trips, I've been to all Aussie states + ACT as of 2023. Great job! I'm very proud with how much progress you've made! Wyoming and Colorado always messed me up in the past. I always use self made hints to help me remember which ones which. I thank the years of me playing with my USA puzzle many times that made me memorize the states without knowing. Childhood experiences really are one of the strongest teachers in life. 😊❤

When I was a kid, I always learned Vermont was shaped like a V. That's how I determined which one was VT and which one was NH.

Well done! I’ve lived in the states for almost 50 years, and you did better than I lol. I know all the states names, but I have a tendency to swap New Hampshire/Vermont and Arkansas/Mississippi every time I do a state quiz. Your up/down mnemonic for NH/VT may help me in that regard, gonna have to try and remember that. :p

Wyoming is north of Colorado, and New Hampshire has a coast on the Atlantic Ocean, Vermont doesn't, and while Alabama and Mississippi both have small gulf coasts, Mississippi's western border is mostly the Mississippi River and west of Alabama. And the west coast is cow from the bottom up, California, Oregon, and Washington... Every trick helps...

I’m happy to say that I was personally taking the test along with you and was able to name each state correctly before you named it. I was doing something extra with the little test that I was taking and I’m not certain how well I did on it. Besides naming each state correctly I was also trying to name the capital of the state. For example New York, Albany; California, Sacramento; Vermont, Montpelier; etc although I don’t know how well I did with the state capitals.

I'm impressed you could name all the states, let alone place them! I'm not sure how many Americans could do that! Presidents next! Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson...you can do it! Only 45 Presidents (47 Presidencies - counting the two non-consecutive ones). Or you could do state capitols. Hint - many (if not most) do not have their state capitol in the largest, best known city.
