Patron 5 Year & Regular Extra Anejo Tequilas Reviewed

Here I sit down with the new $80-$100 standard Extra Anejo tequila from Patron, as well as their $200 Limited Edition 5 Year old. While both are very different from one another, they each were very well crafted. I think they’d be a welcome addition to any collection or bar.

Just bought the extra añejo 3-4 years and its a big difference compared to the regular anejo. My liquor store had it on special for 79.99

I noticed the IB old pulteney 21 in the background. Is it an older G&M bottling? I couldn't find the review for it but how does it compare to the OB?

Yes, my G&M is from 2013 and it’s great for the money. At the time I picked it up for $50, and while it’s not as briny, it’s still a solid whisky. It does need time to open up though. Cheers!

El Mayor is still a serviceable line. It seemed to dip a little when they left the hand painted bottles, but it's still a decent tequila. Cheers!

I've only tasted it once, but did find it very solid for an Extra Añejo. I've been meaning to try and find a bottle to review. I love that you review all kinds of liquor. A lot of reviewers are only scotch or bourbon, and many times they come off as close-minded about their chosen drink, even though they have never tried a Foursquare rum, a Marca Negra Mezcal, a Fortaleza Tequila, a Cognac, an Armagnac, Monkey 47 Gin, etc. To each his own, but I tire of "peat heads" who speak of the whiskey journey, and look down on others who's palates are "not as developed" as their palate, yet think that Rum is Bacardi and Tequila is Cuervo. I just trust your opinion more.

Ohh that's a tough one. I think I might give the slightest edge to Extra Anejo, but I've always tended to like more mature tequilas as well as the purity of the blancos. Cheers!

The traditional “Tahona” method uses a 2-ton (or so) lava rock wheel to roll and crush the pinas in a circular concrete trench. In the old days, it would be pulled by a donkey or mule. Cheers!

Would you choose el mayor over avion 44

I assume we’re talking Extra Anejos. Going from my memory, the $100 Avion 44 might be slightly better than $80 El Mayor Extra Anejo (pricing here in Texas), but if I was watching my spending I’d be fine selecting El Mayor EA first. I most recently had a pour of Avion 44 about a month ago. It had a soft, semi-sweet profile with balanced caramel, baked agave, and oak (didn’t come off as super complex). I remember the El Mayor having more oak and wasn’t as sweet, but it felt more traditional (but that was last tasted it a years or so ago). Cheers!

Great review, as I watch you review bourbon now tequila it's interesting the different notes. They should use this review as a commercial, when I watch this now I want to try both. Do an update if you make the oldfashion cocktail tell us how it turned out.

I actually got to go down and visit the Patron distillery last month. While I was there, that was the first cocktail I had them make for me (Extra Anejo Old Fashioned). I'm happy to report that it lived up to my expectations! Cheers!
