One of my patrons showed up the moment I opened myself up to the idea, and it was very clear very quickly that they'd been around for a long time and just waiting for me to be willing. I'd worked with the other for about a year before I got the message they were also a patron.

From my personal experience, I agree with Frankie - I wasn't looking for a deity in the first place during my witchcraft journey. I had two encounters of a male and female deity from different pantheons that showed up one day. The male one made a grand entrance when he was pissed and was correcting me on a working I was doing - it was a sudden shock for me. The female one was tapping on my spiritual door for a long time - but I wasn't ready to work with her cuz she is SO intense and demands serious commitment. Now I pray and work for them, as part of my practice.

I remember starting to see videos about deity work and wondering if any entity might want to work with me...and I was wondering about Athena. Let me just say that the deity who showed up didn't leave me any margin for error. 😂 She even showed me that She had been with me since childhood and so many things just make sense now.

I would add that Folkism can trigger racist assumptions about genetic inheritance or cultural essentialism, you don't need to have ancestral ties, bloodlines to specific peoples or lands to worship gods. Everyone can worship deities without ancestral faith.
@negy25702 жыл бұрын
@Trinity M I would say even if it's a closed practice if a deity choses you, that's nobody else's business. I also see lot of that judgement happening when there is a lot of reclaiming from an ethnic group, like as an example people with African ancestors they claim they already have Orishas in their blood and they are naturally "initiated" even when they don't actually worship as if the energy of sea, rivers, fire, herbs... existed only there. Also Indians from India are not always happy with people from abroad worshipping their deities, but hey yoga and ayurveda went everywhere and that's a big open channel! Some deities are so deeply connected with natural elements and as humans we are all connected with those energies and anyway are questioning your own deities for going to someone else? In my experience many deities love to travel. Even if you don't have full access to their historical traditions or a sect, you can set up your own tradition, maybe they came for your own sake, not with a social purpose. They get suspicious or surprised about the reason why you felt that click with one of "their" deities, like did your grand-grand-grand-grand... mother buy deities at supermarket and now they're in your fridge and they can go nowhere else? Also a profession or what you have around is not what you would choose or being chosen by. One the sweetest experiences I had with deities in the past was being consigned from a deity to another one and they were from completely different pantheons!
@jw-vs7wh2 жыл бұрын
@@negy2570 it is common respect in my opinion to not work with a deity from a closed practice that you havent been initiated into, gods arent bound by our human rules but its still important to respect the CULTURE that they come from, and if youre not initiated into that religion or tradition, you should not be participating in it. trying to protect your culture and faith from colonization (bc most closed practices are from cultures that have faced racism and their traditions wiped from them or stolen/practiced incorrectly) is not the same as folkism. if youre contacted by a god(dess) from a closed practice you should then seek someone of that tradition to train you and teach you and eventually initiate you if possible, its also not absolutely necessary to work with a deity that has contacted you and you CAN decline. ofc no one can tell you what to do if you're practicing in private, but i think its still important to have basic respect for other peoples faith
@negy25702 жыл бұрын
@@jw-vs7wh I respect your opinion, but my feeling atm is that deities love to travel and they go wherever they want. In a way also Europeans were colonised by Abramitic religions and it's not easy to know who is entirely European, but the real problem is that there was historically a big cut from the previous devotion and ancient deities were confined into folk tales for children, deformed and sometimes even demonized or simply forgotten. Nobody nowadays receives an education about those deities. So what should these people do? I really don't think that they have those deities genetically embedded, like having studied classical mythology at school is nothing like devotion. Most of the time these deities get ridiculed as "the things that people believed in old times when they didn't know any better". And if someone else come to a place from a different culture and feels that those deities make sense for them and feel attracted, should they be forbidden to work with them? Politely decline?? Well, yes, it's an option. You can say: "hey, sorry, you made a mistake and contacted that wrong person." As if people got called from "deities" anyday 😁 We get so many slammed doors in this life. People work in private, because it's difficult to find reliable communities and teachers. If approached with respect, I think that when you get called by any deity it is almost natural to research the culture and hopefully find someone into that tradition helping you, as long as their tradition is pure and not a later rendition with added changes. Very few traditions are absolutely kept pure.

I began working with Loki this year, and I asked if they were my patron at one point because I felt so strongly connected to them. They originally said no, and he revealed later that he was indeed my patron. I asked why he had said no, and he said "Because you weren't yet ready to here that information." Patrons don't come immediately, and sometimes you have to just- open your mind and yourself to be ready for these things. If you aren't ready, that's okay too! You CAN set boundaries, it is healthy to do so. I have had some deities ask me to work with them, and I have turned them down, respectfully of course, and that's a valid and okay thing to do. Loki is my patron, and I work with two other deities. Deity work can be for any level of witch, it all depends on if you've done your research on how to be respectful and open to them, and if you KNOW you are ready for the commitment. It's okay if you aren't. Much love, my witchy friends!

The way I personally view it is that I separate the patron deities into three categories, gods you worship for familial connections and because of the city you live in (like my patron deities are Poseidon-Neptune, Aphrodite-Venus, and Artemis-Diana because my ancestors lived in the cities that worshipped those gods), worshipping gods because of lifestyle and benefits (like I also worship Demeter-Ceres, Apollo-Phoebus, and Athena-Minerva as I like a more farm style life and I work in art and writing), and gods you worship because of hobbies and interests and like benefits (like the rest of my patron gods are Dionysus-Bacchus, Hera-Juno, Hermes-Mercury, Ares-Mars, Hades-Dis Pater, Tyche-Fortuna, Hebe-Juventas and Hephaestus-Vulcan) I also have patron heroes but the worship of heroes is very different from worshipping a god

I actually had another deity come to prepare me to meet my patroness & let go of some religious trauma before beginning my practice with her! 😂 I grew up evangelical and I was determined that I would never work with another deity after my abusive relationship with my old narcissistic god. But when I had my baby, Gaia (who I initially & incorrectly assumed was my patroness) came along to be like “I’m here to help you transition into this new archetype (since I live across the world from my own mother) AND to help you unlearn what a divine relationship looks like to you”. She was gentle and kind and SO easy to hear and understand, and I instantly felt deeply connected to her during my pregnancy and I would try to pray to her and stumble over my words trying to sound “churchy” to be a good devotee and she’d be like “Breathe. You don’t have to do that. Just talk to me.” & she would kind of guide me towards how to properly show her my affection and how to properly listen to her and give her the offerings and acts of devotion that she wanted, & that really prepared me for when Persephone came in and was like “Alright you have a lot of growing to do & I know you’re ready to handle it. Let’s get to it!” 😂 Now she & Hades (as well as Gaia) are super active in my life and I am constantly in conversation with them and deeply adore all of them so much ❤️ But Persephone showed up many times in my childhood (unacknowledged as a “deity” because of my religion at the time but definitely as a role model and someone I looked up to very very deeply even before I knew much about her) & when I started practicing it took her 2 years to show up and she did it exactly when I was ready to take this step with her and accept that my deities now are far more doting and understanding than the god I left behind and that they are here to help me reach my greatest potential, not to oppress me and control my life like my last god. I cannot stress enough how much I cherish my deities and how much healthier my relationship with the divine has been since they reached out to me ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve recently begun working with Gaia, and I find myself really resonating with Her. My experience with Her is similar to yours, at least with how patient She has been with me. I’ve been devoted to Her for a long time even as an atheist, but only recently made that more personal connection. I, too, have felt like a baby deer learning to walk when trying to figure out how to do things properly, and the response for me has been largely the same. As far as profession goes, I’m unemployed, but I did major in Sustainable Development and minor in Sustainable Technology. I’ve always been an avid environmentalist, even since like…3rd grade. My favorite myth DVD as a kid was one about the Labors of Heracles. Luckily, I’m very clairaudient. So, I have that going for me. She has also spoken to me a couple of times in dreams, actually manifesting in them directly at one point. Sadly, I don’t remember what She said in that dream, as my lucidity in my dreams is usually nonexistent, but I do remember feeling like it was really good advice. The suddenness with which I got yoinked once I was in a headspace to be receptive to listening and making that personal connection was…jarring, but I’m adjusting. I get this sense that She has been waiting for me my whole life, and is glad that I’ve finally connected with her in a personal, meaningful way. I’ve been a little shy/embarrassed but She has been patient and hasn’t really pressured me into anything. I’m really grateful for that.

Really loved this video, thanks Frankie 🧡 but I think it’s important to point out that when you said “try not to view Roman deities through a Celtic lens”, that we shouldn’t forget that during the Roman occupation of Britain, the Roman gods were integrated into the native Britons/Celts lives. There were even particular Romano-Celtic deities that were worshipped. In fact, there was a Temple to Diana very close to where I live in a small town in South Wales! So, not saying that there were obviously thousands of years of cultural difference where the two pantheons would have been worshipped very differently, there was also a large period of time where the two crossed over. Just thought it was interesting to note 😊

The Romans were also really good in incorporating local gods and goddesses in their own pantheon and therefore creating a kind of „synchretized“ belief system in which symbolism etc can overlap.

Yea I kinda agree. Cuz pagan deity work/worship is something i personally was never interested in. However, the more im working on my spiritual growth and i got into reiki healing and overall focused on myself the more im noticing these weird signs. For example, even though i wasnt into deity work myself i know others are so i was creating my own personal deity oracle deck for readings and i started to notice the Sekhmet card randomly popping out numerous times. I ignored it though. Then i randomly ran into a lady that lives in Egypt that practices a form of Sekhmet egyptian healing. So since ive always been drawn to egypt i thought that was pretty cool and so i let her attune me. There were other signs as well like alot of her offerings are things i already collect naturally. Like the incense and the cat figures (i love cats). Then i found out that my egyptian zodiac is Sekhmet. So i decided theres way too many synchronicities going on that i started to look into her more and found in Egypt she was considered a Patroness of physicians and healers. So im like oh so maybe thats why shes calling out?

Maybe that's an unpopular opinion on patron deities. I'm sure they exist and every practice is valid. I feel like in my personal practice, I don't need another relationship with someone who is like a(nother) parent to me, because I do have parents. The concept of a patron deity reminds me a lot of a parent-child-relationship, at least the aspect that the patron is always there. To be clear, someone who is always there and watches over us, that's an expectation a baby has on their caregivers and that is slowly replaced by other things when they are becoming older. Well, at least if the relationship is healthy. Maybe there's more to patron deities, that I don't currently know or need a better understanding of it. I think, in adulthood we mostly have relationships with deities that are more pathworking style. You describe your journey very well in other videos. Non of it is forever, even if there are patrons out there. ✨ I personally don't feel pressure to find a patron deity. And deity work is something that I approach quite slowly without a rush. I feel very seen by your content on deity work. Thank you very much, Frankie. And I'd really love to see more in the future!

There’s a few deities I’m interested in mostly from Greek pantheon. The only 2 outside of that was Anubis and Freya. But I actually had a dream about them after asking for contact through my dreams. I was in the middle of my room and I was talking about how idk if they like the altar I made for them etc and how I tried contacting Anubis with candle flames cause I know the lunar witch mention using that but how I don’t think it worked. Then I felt a few presences I think there was more but 3 of them were more dominant in their presence. First off I remember Freya was speaking to me and the moment she talked I automatically knew the name. She was talking to me about doing some spellwork/more protection than I was already doing and showing me my notebook. (I did end up doing more protection stuff just because she told me too and used my notebook to make sigils) Then I asked her if she was calling out to me. She said yes. I then hesitantly asked if she was my matron. (I was hesitant because I’m just like that where I don’t like to assume things with people so I can tell I didn’t want to just assume) it became a little more foggy but I think she said yes. Anyways Freya felt motherly but stern. The second presence I automatically knew as Hestia. She felt warm, generous, welcoming like the feelings I get about drinking tea or a warm fireplace. She told me to try again just like Freya and to not give up. At that point I felt like giving up but in my dream she told me not to. The 3rd presence I know was a darker deity (one dealing with magic or he underworld) it felt more masculine. It felt chill, calm, observant, curious and although he didn’t speak out loud I could sense that he felt the same way as Freya and hestia and encouraging not to give up. The thing is unlike the other 2 whom I knew their names automatically I couldn’t pinpoint who he was only characteristics. I feel like now as I look back on it may have been hades and I know my friend told me she feels like it may have been hades or that he at least he is curious about me but he is also known as the “unseen” and maybe that’s why he didn’t show himself. She also told me though she does feel like/senses Anubis might be trying to call out to me. But tbh idk which one it was or if it was from a diff pantheon. Either Anubis or hades. 🤷🏻♀️ I had another dream after that a little different and not involving them. Then I woke up and felt the need to use my divination cards and decided I would do it that morning.

Oh and I did try using my cards to talk to Persephone and have tried talking to her or making her an altar. I sense she can hear me but if far away in a sense where she doesn’t pay attention. So I’m just gonna try to work with Freya, Anubis and hades and see what happens

Does everyone have certain deities who watch over them, even if they are unaware/non-psychic? Will we find out who are deities/spirit guides/watchers are when we pass on? Besides mundane signs, divination and meditation, what are other ways to find clues of who your deity might be? Does heritage play a huge role in finding a deity? Do deities only choose/notice people who are psychic/spiritually advanced?

Hi, I follow you on TikTok and was looking for videos about deities (more specific Hades) and came across your account, and across this video! I would be very interested to hear a bit more about how you could send out your intention to the universe to find your patron! Your words did put me at ease, as a beginner witch I heard a lot of people talk about their patron. It made me doubt myself and I was even wondering if I'm enough of a witch or pagan if I don't have a patron/matron (yet), so thanks for this video!

Do you have any book/blog recommendations or references in general regarding ancestor worship? I'm extremely curious about the subject. Maybe you could even do a video regarding the concept 🤩

Very curious, at age of 6 or so, during a traumatic experience, one of my guides pulled me into the astral plane to help protect me from the trauma, at about age 9 or 10, I began to have an entity appearing to me and by the time I was 19, I needed assistance asking this entity to realize I was now grown and the entity who had become a type of familiar I guess, it had begun to act on my behalf and actually caused my friend to have an intense nose bleed in public, I have been to a master healer and they helped me help my familiar "move on" I'm just curious about who actually pulled me into the astral, I have such a mix of heritages in my bloodline, and was not raised by my Spanish relatives, but by my Irish and Scottish side, who I also have Native American heritage, I guess I'm asking where the heck to start even figuring this all out.

The looking at the surroundings part doesn't really work for me because not much is known about what was practiced in Romania before christianity, but I work with Athena, and the main reasons I chose her as the main deity I work with is because i am a just person, I don't tolerate injustice , cruel behaviour, I like learning different things and prefer to use my mind rather than emotions, I like having a clear mind.

Fascinating. I'd be interested in your thoughts in my situation. I've been Pagan since 15 yrs old (33 years) & my first Patron was Apollo. (I think because I'm a musician & also lgbt), in my 20s he was joined by Odin & the Norse pantheon. I've studied & read Runes ever since. Now, at almost 48, Mars has appeared & is very insistent that I pay attention to him. I am a Martial Artist, & recently started gardening, so that makes sense. Geographically I live in the Roman town of Danum, which later was part of the Danelaw. So my location has strong Roman & Norse links. I guess what I'm curious about is, can you have more than 1 Patron at once? Like multiple teachers? It seems that's what I have.

It's perfect the comment number is 111 before my comment 😅 I've been working with Freya for just over a year and I have a really close bond with her. I have since day one. I still am not totally sure if she is my patroness, but I would feel very happy and honoured if she was. She came to me though neighbourhood cats and in my dreams completely out of no where in September last year when I was having a really hard time with life

i just imagine one deity talking to another like 'hey are you trying to talk to this person? i think they got confused and thought it was me' or if you offer to the wrong one 'hey they sent me these, but i think it's for you' 'thanks man i'm waiting for them to realize but thanks for the help' lolz yes my mind goes to nice places lolz

that was hilarious and probably true 🤣 When I had statues of different pantheons on my altar I had a feeling that they were like "uh, who's this one?" then they met from far cultures. Sometimes it worked well, they were friendly, but it all looked like playing Barbie & Ken in adulthood. Not said in a bad way 😉

Hi! I was wondering if you could answer a baby witch's question on deities. I dont necessarily believe in the deities as beings but more as ideas and spiritual power, would it still be possible for me to be a practicing witch and possibly even do deities work in the future?

The way gods were seen and worshipped changed a lot over time didn't it? Do you just pick a time like you'd choose between Jupiter and Zeus? Or do you treat them as an amalgamation of the ways they were seen at different times?

I really like the progress you made. I am interested in Celtic mythology and wicca magick, but the real reason, why I subscribed was to observe how you come up. It's so satisfying to see it. I think you used your mobile at the beginning? You have a DSLR camera now I'm assuming, and there are cuts and edits, and the content is more concise (proper educational).
