My only question about the ending is what was happening before they stated "harvesting" the "roots." Like the portal is deep underground were people just popping in a starving to death in a cave?

Nobody was coming through until the first guy in 1988. They had already been harvested and damaged at that point.

Pretty accurate depiction of a potential future where the world is fucked cause 1 guy wants more cash. Even after finding out what cutting the roots does and more people would use the pool, he still continues to cut the roots because money though! 😅

So how did the time gate come to exist? Who built it and how? Or are we just not supposed to give any thought to it? Of all the things I thought might be happening, time fuckery makes the least sense. It couldn't have been built by people in the future because it already exists in the past, meaning it had to be discovered in the future. For any future people to use it for the express purpose of warning people in the past, those future people would already have to have knowledge of the time gate's existence and operation, this implies the existence of other time gates. Crow got the note from the first person to use that specific gate and they already had that knowledge. Why does the time gate only connect 2106 to 1990, is it a natural phenomenon or is that how it was programmed by the designer? Are these all questions for a sequel hook? They could have gone with finding a gate to literal Hell and it would have made more sense. Aliens/cosmic horror or government/corporation conspiracy genetic experimentation, any of those would make more sense than this ending.

I feel like you're overthinking it. Many time machine theories require there to be a pre-existing time machine in place for you to travel to when you go back in time, to avoid issues like Earth being in a different location in physical space and that causing you to 'go back' and end up floating in a void. It doesn't really matter who built it, or why they built it. Why did anybody make the T-virus or whatever? Government something something, capitalism, to save the Earth, whatever you want. How many of these games make the protagonist go underground into some impossible government facility abandoned after an accident a decade ago? The note says 1988 was the last chance to change whatever was going to happen that was going to ruin the timeline. It doesn't say what the issue was, specifically, because that wouldn't be interesting. They used a time machine they thought was working and ended up melting into monsters and getting hunted down by this dude and his staff. That's all there is to it.

The people of the future built it. Presumably they poked a hole in space time, or whatever sci-fi explanation you wanna use. This caused the portal, or what Mr. Crow called the Pool, to appear in the past. Future people build and stick the Roots through the Pool to stabilize it, but back in the past, Crow's dad goes, "Whoa, free gold poles!" They chop them up, which fucks up the portal, which fucks up the people coming through. They actually started coming through back in 1988. Crow was already aware of the portal, he just didn't know what it was until the first guest came out, and by that point it was already too late because of all the Root cutting they did. If you really want poke holes in it, you should ask why the people of the future didn't just send a robot, or stick a note on the Roots saying "hey don't mess with these please", but they're pure gold poles, people were going to mess with them. I guess they were hoping they'd pop out by like NASA or something, but no dice. Still, I personally like that it wasn't demons or cosmic horror, but something different for once.

@@joinsideke That's not how causality works though. The only way the time gate can exist in the past is if it was already built.Time travel isn't magic. If a writer is going to use a sci-fi element as a plot device, it needs to have sufficient explanation and justification and not feel like it's completely out of left field. It's not like I'm trying to poke holes in the plot, it's just that this one is too big to go unnoticed and handwaved. I hope they elaborate on it if they make another in the same setting. The game is still great, it does almost everything well. It just has an ending that leaves me unsatisfied with questions. All the Resident Evil games have dumb plot elements that don't make sense also and they're all classics.

@@stenzel27 This is like watching all three Back to the Future movies and going "How could a DMC DeLorean exist in the 1800s when the DeLorean Motor Company was only founded in 1975? John DeLorean wasn't even born yet!" It's a time machine. It's in the past because it traveled there.
