After the very first read through of Ab Fab, Joanna Lumley called her agent and asked them to get her out of the contract. Joanna felt that she was terrible in the read and that Jennifer Saunders hated her. Her agent told her to stick it out because “it’s just a pilot”. I love that story because it’s a helpful reminder that even someone with the comedic brilliance of Joanna Lumley who created one of the greatest characters in television history goes through periods of self doubt and inadequacy. Thank goodness she stuck it out!

Those were all Jennifer Saunders’ writings. The series came partly out of a “French & Saunders” skit (Jennifer as Edina, Dawn as Saffy), and partly out of a Ruby Wax episode where she broke into Joanna Lumley’s house (climbed up the drainpipe, as I recall) and found she had become a decrepit, alcoholic recluse since her young hawt-babe days. You see Ruby credited as “Script Editor”, so I guess she had some input to the writing, too.

@@puirYorickit actually is Helena Bonham Carter playing Saffy. I remember the scene and remember a famous female rock star 🎸🎤playing a nurse singing 'can the can' and 'devil gate drive' although I don't remember her name. Alan Rickman (R.I.P.) was playing Saffy's father Justin and the Australian 🇦🇺🌏🦘feminist author Germaine Greer was playing Eddy's mother. For some unknown reason Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds was there too voiced by the same woman who voiced her in Thunderbirds TV show.

Joshua Splawn He has a point. One can only take so much of this ludicrous show. Just as in real life, drunkards and addicts repeat themselves and make the same idiotic mistakes over & over again. It’s not funny after the 5th or 6th EPISODE, let alone season. I’m guessing continuing to watch this show for much longer than that would probably be about as much fun as the parties to which you’re referring. Snore. I’m happy for the actors’ & writers’ success. They’re all multi-faceted, talented performers. But good God, a few episodes is plenty, thank you very much!

When I was around fourteen, I stumbled across Absolutely Fabulous, in the dead of night, while spending the weekend at my father and stepmother's house. They had a lot of channels that were unknown to me at the time, since the had satellite instead of cable. I had become rather disillusioned with the satellite service once I discovered that even with hundreds of channels, there still seemed to be nothing on worth watching late at night. Within a matter of minutes I realized that I had something new to fanboy over! Despite being extremely, fanatically anti-alcohol and anti-drug, I found Patsy and Eddie to be absolutely delightful! One of my favorite moments in the series was when Patsy was unable to remember her real age! It became just slightly less funny after the same thing happened to me a few years ago! It is a good example of knowing when it's high time to end a bender/binge! And now, many years later than I care to think about, Absolutely Fabulous remains one of the only shows, ever, that I still love just as much as when it was still new to me! I wish that they would commit to a few more seasons! While I can think of numerous duos that would have been better role models for my sister and I, none of them are nearly as fun! Cheers sweetie darlings!!! 😘

My favorite moment wasn’t a line. It was Safi saying “it comes back,” and the swing knocking Patsy down. I’ve thought about that so many times since I was a kid.

My favourite Patsy moment was when she was stood in the kitchen on the phone to somebody (I forget who) but she mentioned that she needs incontinence pants not knowing that Saffy is stood directly behind her and heard everything! You can imagine the look on Saffy's face when she hears that! 😮 Patsy shows just what a brilliant and wonderfully gifted actress Joanna Lumley is because in real life she's nothing like her. Patsy has too many brilliant moments and one liners but they're all equally brilliant and absolutely bloody fabulously hilarious 😂😂😂😂

It's missing two of my favourite Patsy moments. During the morning show episode with Dawn French: "And later we'll be speaking to our Sports Personality Of The Year..." "... a contradiction in terms..." And in the car with Eddie (not sure of the episode): "What's your star sign?" "Aqua Libra." "It says Uranus is in a good position this year." "I'll be the judge of that."

If you've seen her documentaries, you will know what an adorable person Joanna can be. But the disturbing thing is that Patsy is lurking just below the surface! It also makes me wonder what the REAL Joanna Lumley is like. I think we only see what she wants us to see. An enigma.

I'm reminded of something actress Damaris Hayman once said about genuinely good people are the best at playing monstrous characters as they aren't afraid that there's any of that character in them.

I think Ruby Wax has to take the -blame- credit for bringing out that side of Lumley. Ruby had a show where Joanna was supposed to have a regular spot as a chef, but she spent more time moaning about the wreckage of her personal life (as a former celebrity) than actually cooking anything. It was hilarious. And I think also a form of preparation for what became Patsy.

I'd been watching this , for quite a while, starring Miss Joanna Lumley , ...then Lo and Behold, she was cast as one of the Wicked Aunties in " James and the Giant Peach " in 1996. I recognized her straight away, and other people were asking themselves " who she was ". .... she was perfectly cast for that Role. ... I don't know if people realize she's been in many movies, including Wolf of Wall Street ; Ella Enchanted , as well as " Absolutely Fabulous ", the Movie in 2016. She's had a long career, I even saw her on " Are you Being Served " ... ( I think she might have been married to Jeremy Lloyd at the time, not sure .) She's very talented, playing one of the most humorous and great Roles in this Show .... I'm glad she is still gracing the Earthly Plane . Of course, Jennifer Saunders was given a Role that suited her, as well.... so talented, the both of them.
