Assalamualaikum bro. Krue Se Mosque was built almost 500 years ago. It was built after the Buddhist kings of the Lankasuka (ancient kingdom) converted to Islam. When King Sri Indira of the Lankasuka kingdom converted to Islam, he changed his name and title to Sultan Ismail Shah. Later, the Lankasuka kingdom it was called Fatoni(Pattani) Darussalam Kingdom.Around 1785 AD the Pattani Kingdom lost the war to the Siamese Kingdom, Krue Se Mosque was abandoned for hundreds of years. The Krue Se Mosque building is still of ancient brick because the Krue se Mosque is an ancient site under Thai law which does not allow changes to the building and entering to pray. Pattani Muslims protested several years ago and the Thai government allowed some parts of the mosque building to be renovated.

I’m a non-muslim from Bangkok, and I’ve been to Pattani once. I wanted to go there because I was (still am) interested in the muslim culture and history of the muslim community in that region. I visited all the iconic mosques, tried some delicious local food, and stuff. Even though the majority of the locals are muslims, it’s actually a multicultural city with a mix of muslims, Chinese Thais and Buddhist Thais, and that’s what’s charming about it. The people there are extremely friendly like in the video. I was offered a free motorcycle ride and was invited into a home of a muslim local, and I’m not even a muslim! Your video makes me want to go there again and have more interactions with the locals. Also, I never knew there were quite a few foreigners living there as well.

People in Southern Thailand are Malays similar to Malays in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia. There are 5 provinces in Southern Thailand are Muslims majority. There were separated with Malay states in Malaysia by Anglo-Siamese Treaty in 1909 between Thailand and British where states of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Songkhla and Satun under Thai admin. Meanwhile Malay states Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah under British administration until gained independence in 1957. All those Malay Thai provinces and Malay states in Malaysia used to be under Pattani Darussalam Empire and were under Melaka Malay Sultanate and as usual the western colonials came and divided us as happened to many parts of the world included India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Yemen South/North, Palestine, Gulf and in Africa. Since then Malays in Southern Thailand have gone process of assimilation and have to learn Thai, and many Buddhist Thai have been relocated to Southern Thailand. Most of Thai Malays still can speaks Malay with Pattani dialect similar to Kelantanese dialect in Malaysia but young generation mostly in Songkhla, Hatyai, Phuket no longer can speak Malay fluently due to assimilation process. There were a few incidents since then by Muslim separatists in Southern Thailand due to discrimination by Bangkok administrative towards Malay Muslims. The condition has been improving slowly, but still the incidents can be happened. Most Malays in Southern Thailand have relatives in Northern parts of Malaysia.
@myertravels9 ай бұрын
Yes I noticed the culture is very Malay but with a mix of Thai
@Draighcore9 ай бұрын
Indonesians are not Malays. Stop stereotyping like this
@vassanab42439 ай бұрын
You miss one important part of the history which is they were already under Siam empire before the British came. Siam or now Thailand was never colonized by the British so why do you think the British would give the land to Siam for ‘FREE’? It’s actually Siam who lost the land to British which are Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah that became part of the Malaysia when they were free from the British. This is why Siam or Thailand is the only country in South East Asia that was never colonized by western countries. They saved their ass from the western colonizer by giving some land (that they also colonized) to western colonizers. Some part of the land to France became Laos, Cambodia. Some part to the British became part or Myanmar, Malaysia. Malaysia was also not a one big kingdom like Siam but separate state with their own sultan, Each state became together as one country thanks to the British as you can see they have many sultans while Thailand only have 1 kings.
@vassanab42439 ай бұрын
Btw all separation that you mention such as India/Pakistan/Bangladesh are all under the British, but Siam(Thailand) was not under British so there is no logical reason why British would gave the land to Siam, it’s actually other way around. When the mafia or higher power gangs come to your area, you give money to the mafia, not other way around. This is same as Siam to the British.
Alhamdulilah. Thai Muslim people so humble to others. Thanks Myer for sharing.

Wa'alaikumsalam.. Yes, we in the South-east Asia region have the same Malay roots. Even Philippines' Jose Rizal said that he is proud to be a Malay in 1 of his books. The Malay language was the lingua franca back during the Melaka Sultanare era in the 15th century; & under Melaka, Islam was the main religion in the region. Philippines' Tagalog language also have some Malay root words in them. Pattani has the yearly Malay Celebration event called Melayu Raya, complete with Islamic sermons & prayers as well. Pattani's spoken language is Malay, & is basically the same as the Malay language in Malaysia. That's why the Hari Raya khutbah is in Malay (just like Brunei). Selamat Hari Raya 'Aidilfitri..
