I do remember leading up to Feb 2019 was pretty similar - the forecast didnt really catch on to it until it was upon us. Lots of flip flopping and it caught a lot of us by surprise. We shall see how this pans out. I have a feeling we are due for it. Sure hope so!

Seeing snow in the Portland extended forecast and I'm excited, yet cautious. 99% of the time, it amounts to 37 flakes and the recently-imported Californian drivers freak out at rush hour while the rest of us roll our eyes. The other 1% involves widespread power outages, destruction, and I'm in my yard for 2 days with a rake and a chainsaw.

My main concern is that upper low SW of the coast at the beginning of the event.Over the years,Ive seen many an arctic air lobe drift too far off the coast (and sometimes phase with another low,)the result being a warm maritime SW flow and rain, not snow.Its looking pretty marginal, dont get your hopes up......

Well I guess I will have to enjoy sun for the next day or so. I would prefer 28" of power in the hills around Philomath, but sun will be nicer than clouds we normally have at this time. One thing that I do love with the PNW is i can get my snow fix if im willing to drive 45min to an hour east to the good old western Cascade mountains.

ECMWF with mild southwest flow, GFS not buying that fully. Seems like the Euro may win out with less snow to no snow for lower elevations and milder temps. My contention anyways.

I recon you have some "weather weenies" like myself that know a good deal about the weather but would like a deep dive on some of the things you talk about. Like why are we throwing the GFS in the trash? 850mb... what? Temps aloft need to be about -6º for show at sea leave. I can infer and can Google but I think we all wanna here from yourself? Unless you've already done all this before and in that case can someone point myself in the right direction?

Every big snow event here in Bend has never been predicted accurately. I’m talking snow amounts that total over 12”. They are never predicted let alone the times we get 2-3’ of snow. Hard to predict precipitation amounts in the form of snow here for some reason during the big events. I’m assuming it just has to do with our geography and proximity to the mountain range.

What surprised me was that the ECMWF AI (12Z) has gone the way of the ECMWF. So much for AI supposedly being superior to the traditional models. At least the traditional European has been consistent these past few days. The GFS AI a.k.a GraphCast GFS is the outlier with the cold air and snow all the way down through Oregon. CMC is all over the place as usual. That Pacific energy is the problem for these models it seems.
@harrisonrutledge52 күн бұрын
Agreed. I'm going with the 12Z ECMWF and the ECMWF model with a return to the same pattern as in November and December with decent south to southwest flow. I think the cold snowy GFS doesn't make much sense at this point. Due to this the ECMWF 12Z run shows much more accumulated precipitation due to SW flow. GFS has weaker lows sliding down the coast from the northwest. The complete opposite of the EC.
