Part 2 • Pattern Variations in ...
The new auto-generated corner tile presets in Adobe Illustrator CC can be used for more than just making borders. This tutorial explores alternative methods of applying pattern brushes to basic geometric shapes to generate dozens of pattern variations in seconds.
Applying this quick method can produce dozens of interesting design results to explore, all from one initial design. Create alternate tiling patterns from one pattern brush, or use the results to create new designs altogether. If you haven't used the pattern brush beyond creating a repeating tiled border, this tutorial will help incorporate it into your workflow as a great way to brainstorm for new design possibilities.

Hi Jean-Pierre - fantastic creativity, thanks for sharing! I'd love to know the fill/stoke settings you applied to create the triangle shape you show around the 11 min 15 second mark in your video.

Hello, here's a breakdown of how I created the spiral triangle in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKSXmaWpZtaEjqs To achieve the outline effect start with triangles that have a thick stroke and no fill, between 5-10 pt, and expand the final result after the transforms are applied (the expanded triangles will have the fill of the stroke color used, with no stroke color). Switch the fill to a 1 pt stroke to create the outline of the triangles, then select the entire design and use the Live Paint Bucket tool ("k" hotkey) to fill the gaps between each triangle. Hopefully that's not too confusing and it helps!

Hi! First of all, thank you for sharing this and other Illustrator tutorials; your videos are very informative and inspiring :) I've watched your videos on triangles and pattern variations a couple of times now and have successfully applied the techniques that you covered. However, there is one particular bit that I'm trying to recreate but can't - the triangle base that you used for the pattern variation in this video (around 11:19). I've experimented with various angles of rotation (around 4 degrees) and scaling (around 90%) but can't seem to get the triangles to make that nice sharp inner curve. Is there any chance you'd shed some light on that? Cheers!
@illustratortutorials1596
@illustratortutorials1596 7 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you enjoyed my videos, thank you so much! I would suggest you try creating a line segment with the curve that you want for the inner overlap (you could trace the inner curve from the triangle from the video if it helps) make three of them within a circle (rotated 120º) and then alter each individual triangle's scale and rotation, attempting to match the overlap with the line segments. That's actually similar to how I created the triangle you see. Each triangle is slightly varied, yet are around the values I used within the Spiral Triangles video. Hopefully that helps, please let me know if you need any other pointers, and I'll save some space for addressing them in future videos!

HI J-P, I am learning to make vector objects. Your vids are so helpful with nice step by step directions and a vast amount of inspiration! Oh, and your voice is easy on the ears. Thank you, also, for not adding background sounds (music). Many (A.D.D.) peeps, like me, find some music detrimental to our comprehension. I listen to my own music, softly set (Try: Chris Rice). Smiles from Prescott, AZ, Constance

I'm trying to get a result like the patterns you got at 11:26. What sort of shape did you use for the pattern?
@illustratortutorials1596
@illustratortutorials1596 6 жыл бұрын
Hey PapaGeorgio1337, check out my Spiral Triangles video to learn how I created the triangle design, then arrange the finished triangle in a zig-zag like pattern. It should look like one triangle with one point facing up (looks similar to the letter "A"), and the other horizontally flipped, so the triangles should look like "AV" next to one another. Cut the first triangle in half, and take the left half and move it to the other side of the second triangle - then select all of the design and convert into a pattern brush. The more you experiment, the more you'll find interesting patterns to work with.

@illustratortutorials1596
@illustratortutorials1596 9 жыл бұрын
+Whispers Around A Tree Thank you very much! The symbol in the box was created using a calligraphic brush preset I created for font design. The calligraphic brush preset is 145º angle, 10% roundness and the size is 45, and all other options are fixed in the calligraphic brush palette. Hopefully that will help!
