Patternmaster Choke Technology, Code Black Duck

This is the first real video for the new Shotgun Series, part 1. I wanted to start with something a little different, something that had a new and undiscovered technology vs the standard chokes that just constrict the bore of the shotgun. Pattermaster Code Black designed the Stud Ring for the choke, this eliminates the need to constrict the bore while controlling the pattern and delivering more shot on target all at once eliminating the stringing effect. If you’ve ever shot over water, you know what I’m talking about!

I cracked my Carlson Creamator ported choke the other day out duck hunting. I am at Cabelas right now..... and you just sold me on a Patternmaster Code Black. Guess I better pick up the duck AND goose since I have my crane hunt this weekend.

Interesting content. Thanks. I'm not saying that this tube isn't all that, but the shot string is traveling 750-1000 fps and the bird is traveling at 65-75fps. The shot string arrives on the target nearly simultaneously even on crossing targets. This argument was proven back in the early days of 3.5" 12ga being compared to the 10ga. Physics tells us that pattern density is more important than shot string. Shoot paper. It is the judge. Great videos!

This explains a lot. Ive been trying to describe how shot strings work to some friends. Also makes sense why you have to follow thru, tail to beak when you pull the trigger, to drag the shot string... If it even makes a difference. Thank you

At 65 I can honestly say, I’ve never been duck hunting with a shotgun. Every time I’ve gone after duck with my trusty 22lr, 😂. Never wounded any, all head shots out to about 90yds. That was quite a while ago, haven’t been out lately due to health issues. Great to have you back speaking sense and fact Vaughny, thanks.

Informative video, thank you for making this. I just bought a code black duck and code black goose for my Benelli SBEII. The code black goose choke is a significantly longer choke than the code black duck. I like the results so far after this opening duck season using the code black duck.

I just got a nice bunch of mallards yesterday with it and using BOSS shot shells. I really like the pattern I get with this choke and BOSS 4 shot.

@@vaughnprecision this is my first full choke. I usually shoot a mid range Carlson choke. So I had to adjust my shooting. I used my BOSS 5’s and 3’s and had some lights out results shooting the gadwalls, wigeon, and ring necks. Mallards are not always around for us unfortunately. I also tried some other shell brands and had the same great results. These chokes are a great investment I’m glad I bought them.

For anyone wondering, I have the code black turkey. Patterns most.of the shot in 10-11" circles at 80 feet. And that's with 7 1/2, 8 shot and #4 shot. All lead. Hope this helps.

SVTBansheeman buckshot has been hard to find right now. I’d like to test out that choke to, I’ve been hearing good things about that one to. I’ve got a few boxes of buckshot on hand, so maybe I’ll buy that one next. I just got the SSS Sporting and Trap chokes from them, the sporting works great. I’m shooting a ducks unlimited shoot tomorrow with it. In September I’ll be shooting a trap event so I’ll use my Mid Trap choke and see how that one does. The anaconda design seems to work very well from my testing so far.

Your videos are great. Keep in mind that you need to know what type of wad is in your ammo. Patternmaster makes a choke for flight control wads. I have been shooting a Patternmaster since they came out. I have the close and long range. They are awesome. Wait till you start shooting clays. Powder city

I’ve actually found a better combo that I’ve been using for about a year now. I now shoot a Müller choke, waterfowl series with the “Passing” construction and BOSS Warchief 3/5 blend for all my ducks and geese. I’ve taken geese with this combo at 50 yards. I find much more consistent patterns. I also started using this same choke for sporting clays and have improved my scores overall. I still like the code black, but the muller choke in all my testing has given the best results. Just some honest feedback to think over.

Patternmaster claimed to reduce the shot string because of the studs stopping the wad for a milli-second. This seemed to be an experiment that was never proven to be what they hoped, because they can’t answer how they proved to shorten the string, yet went with it anyway and used it as a marketing hook. The fact is that the longer a wad stays with the shot, the shorter the shot string. Patternmaster chokes actually lengthened the shot string. This is proven in “Surviving Duck Season” the shotgunning series (you tube) where a super slow motion camera is used to see shot strings from the gun barrel down to 40 yards. Watch it.

I know this is off the subject, but it applies to chokes in a way. Can you shoot slugs through a choke or do you have to remove the choke before shooting?

Hello this is a brief answer. Yes you have to use a choke to shoot slugs. ( Never shoot a shotgun that uses screw in choke without one installed) And use proper size choke. General rule is never use any thing tighter than modified choke size. Some may say full is ok but for safety would not.

Typically speaking, a choke at cylinder bore or improved cylinder work the best. Almost never a full choke.!

Hello, I have a Winchester SX3 3 inches chamber. I am looking for a choke to hunt for goose only. Should I buy a Patternmaster Code Black Duck or Patternmaster Code Black Goose? I have noted that the Patternmaster Code Black Goose is to accommodate the 3 1/2 inches shell, could I use it for my 3 inches chamber shotgun? What are the pros and cons? Thank you

You can use the goose and it will hold a tight pattern with the right ammo. I find it a little to tight for ducks.

I'm not convinced getting the shot out of the wad before leaving the barrel is a good thing for range or tight patterns. Look at federals flight control wads, they would not like this choke at all. I'm sold on the flight control method. 40 yds is short for them. Also steel shot out of the cup in choke has to bounce a ton.
