Episode #6 - A Chat with Carolyn of Merchant and Mills • Episode #6 - A chat wi...
1. Is there a PR Weekend planned for this year? I went one year and it was a blast! I would love to go again now that we are moving past COVID-19!
2. Do I size down if I substitute 3% stretch cotton sateen for the recommended woven for a sheath pattern? I would very much appreciate your expertise on this query please.
3. Hi Deepika! I love the new KZbin video series! Your show and tell is fun, the dress you made is adorable and the shrug you knitted is just beautiful! I was wondering if you might share your sewing goals for 2022 or, what I see from other sewists, your Make 9 for 2022? Also, do you have plans to have a PR Weekend this year or is Covid still an issue for that kind of thing? Thank you and keep up the fun content!
4. LOVE LOVE your knitted scarf with your dress review.. can you share or direct me to the pattern? Also liked the pick stitching you did on the neck facing.. where will I find your response?

Love the up-cycled tshirt. Such a good idea. I have an organization that I get t-shirts every year and I may just copy your idea -- of course, because of the process it will never be the same. Which I love. Your new fabrics from India are gorgeous. I love the woven purple top that you had made. The fabric is just luscious.

Please do! and share on PatternReview. I love it when people get inspired from show and tell. That is the whole idea behind it. If you are referring to the purple top I am wearing in the video, that fabric is called Ikat and the one I have is cotton and silk blend. I didn't sew it though. My favorite tailor in India who sews all my Indian blouses when I visit, did it in less than 24 hours! It takes me longer than that to even think about sewing. LOL!

While all are beautiful, I really appreciated seeing the absolutely gorgeous yellow hand embroidered blouse fabric! It reminds me of tops I had in the 1970s, and I can’t imagine how many hours of work went into the embroidery! So special that you found it! Definitely find a long flowing dress pattern for the print - again it reminds of a 1960s or 1970’s beach coverup or the very wide leg ankle length one piece numbers that looked like a dress, but weren’t! (I’m envisioning a Barbie doll pattern I had, but full size of course!) Enjoy your finds - I did!

Thank you. The chikankari (embroidery style from India) yellow tunic was my favorite find from this visit. I had been wanting one for years. I am so happy with it. Thanks for the suggestions. I am thinking of the newer styles of Caftan style dresses which are flowy and still cinched at the waist for some definition. I will try my best to not let this fabric age.

I love your upcycled t-shirt!. It is so fun! The fabric from India is so beautiful. When I visited several years ago I was floored at the stalls of beautiful fabric. There is real craftsmanship there. I also had a few outfits made. It was fun to have something made just for me.

Thank you. And yes to real craftsmanship. I wish I sewed more with my fabrics from India. I don't know what is stopping me. But I am going to try cutting into them this year. Especially my colorful kantha silk.

Thank you Stephanie. I will think about an episode about reverse applique then. Perhaps I will call for questions on IG first and then tailor the episode answering them.

Deepika, all of your fabrics are just stunning! Can you tell me where you found them? I go to New Delhi on a regular basis, and am not sure where to shop for fabric. Also, why do you have PR Weekend only on the coasts? Why not in a city in the center of the country?

Yes, there are many fabric stores in Nehru Place, Delhi. All my fabrics came from a store called Textures. There is H.P. Singh also there which is slightly more known. You cannot come back empty handed :) We try to host PR Weekends where there is a fabric district and public transport. Since PR Weekend is a not-for-profit event, our budget is really small. We also rely on volunteers. If there is someone who is willing to plan and take a lead on hosting in the center of Country, I will absolutely consider it.

I brought many yards of hand printed fabric back from India. I would like to get more. Do you know of some online resources that are reliable? Thank you!

I love hand printed fabrics. I have not bought these fabrics online but I know a friend recently bought some indian fabrics from this store and she was extremely happy with their service. www.sanskrutistore.com/
