He used to rehearse give a performance with the WU Jazz orchestra in the 1960's in St. Louis every couple of weeks. He would bring guest artists with him. I was sitting in the band stand (I am a guitarist) looking at Oliver conduct while holding his sax, when the alto sax next to me stood up and took a solo for about five minutes (Phil Wood). I was watching a woman in the doorway watch us when I realized it was the late Charlie Parkers wife. Over to my right the bassist sure looked a lot like Ron Carter. Oliver Nelson was in a category second only to Coltrane. Needless to say the hair on my teen aged arms was standing up. I remember thinking, hmm? maybe I can play guitar? Otherwise. what am I doing here? In hid sight , pure luck.
