I will buy this thing on Day one. I still buy and play Sega CD and PSone games, so it will be nice to have a back-up system for my games. As for Turbo CD games, I own three which I picked up in lots when buying Turbografx-16 games. The Turbo CD games I own are Cosmic Fantasy 2 (Working Designs RPG), It came from the desert, and Madden. I don't own a Turbo CD, so I would like to play these. I very much want to get into Neo Geo CD as well.
@8ByteBrian6 жыл бұрын
It looks cool, but I don't like the idea of having to download the bios for some systems, roms are one thing but downloading bios files is really having the user put their neck out there. Without the NEO GEO & Turbo CD Bios, it's basically a glorified PS1. It looks cool but I just think it's poor development & execution which at best gives consumers a "seedy" product where they have to download illegal files to use half of the console...that's shady.
@johnpenguinthe3rd136 жыл бұрын
Oh.... I did more research (and saw the last minute of this video) and now I'm having second thoughts about this thing. PlayStation: BIOS file not required but recommended, TurboGrafx CD: BIOS file required, Sega CD: BIOS file required, Neo Geo CD: BIOS file required. This is NOT good.... I don't like this. I don't like the idea of having to hunt down the Bios files and do a bunch of other junk. If it's not pre-installed, then I might not bother with this.

I think the difference here is that this is designed first and foremost to play physical media rather than ROMs. I have a feeling that they look more kindly on the likes of the Retron and the RetroFreak than they do on the the likes of the Dreamcade or the Atari Box.
@GeoNeilUK6 жыл бұрын
But this is an actual console that plays retrogames, complete with a DVD drive and it's also compatible with the Retrode. How is this just a PC in a box? What's the RetroFreak?
@GeoNeilUK6 жыл бұрын
"How exactly is this a console? Does it run exclusive games on exclusive hardware? I dont think so" So, what you're saying is, the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One are not consoles. Neither of them run exclusive games, neither of them have exclusive hardware. In fact, they're based around the exact same hardware. (AMD Jaguar) Also, the Nintendo Switch is not a console. It doesn't run exclusive games and it doesn't have exclusive hardware. It uses the same hardware that you'll find in an iPad, an iPhone, an Android phone or an Android tablet. In fact, it uses the same hardware as the Raspberry Pi. (ARM) And you can go even further back - the Sega Mega Drive and Neo Geo weren't consoles, they too ran non-exclusive games and didn't run exclusive hardware - the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST had the same hardware. (68000) The Sega Master System, NES, ColecoVision weren't consoles, they had the same hardware as the ZX Spectrum and the MSX range. (Z80) Not even the Atari 2600 qualifies, its games weren't exclusive and it had the same hardware as the Commodore 64, Atari 8 bit, BBC Micro, Acorn Electron. (6502) They were all just shitty clones of each other... either that or just shitty PCs in a box, right?
@3DGECASE6 жыл бұрын
I hate to nitpick, but the NES's 2A03 CPU is based off of the 6502, not the Z80 :P

@TheTurnipKing6 жыл бұрын
It's possible to develop fully legal workalike bioses, and this has been done for many systems, but for proper compatabiltiy most emulators simply request you supply an original BIOS. One vintage anti-piracy trick is relying on the system having an unmodified BIOS. This is occasionally the source of certain games refusing to run on newer iterations of the hardware.

I like this, but I'm more interested in the Polymega. I'm not really a fan of clones, especially not ones that work through emulation, but it's getting to the point where buying and maintaining some of these older CD-based systems just isn't practical anymore. The Saturn and Dreamcast in particular have common problems that can't be solved with off the shelf parts.
@Noobsaibot216 жыл бұрын
As others have alluded to, this looks kinda meh really. If you ask me, the way to indulge in retro gaming is: 1. Actual consoles and controllers with RGB Scart (best on a good CRT but failing that, with a good upscaler if going to HDTV). Ideally with original carts and discs but if they are failing or impossible to find, everdrives/GDEmus & a couple of SD cards will be perfectly fine). Disc emulation devices like GDEmu and Rhea are just fantastic and give the console a MUCH longer life than a noisy, mechanical cd drive that will some day fail. 2. A good PC. Heck, doesn't have to be a monster gaming rig - a small form factor PC (say, a Dell Optiplex 390) with a wireless KB & Mouse hooked up to the HDTV will handle any emulator you can think of. Cost little, play emulators (and pretty much any media) better than Raspberry Pi and do loads of other stuff too. I have one and it looks rather nice in my TV unit (though I only use it for TV and Steam in home streaming from my gaming rig). Plus - it's windows. Much easier to use than linux for your average consumer. 3. Raspberry Pi and pi variants. Can be fiddly to set up and overall fairly limited. Yes, you can get most of the benefits of option 2 with a lot of tinkering but why bother? Plus, there are some Micro computers available cheap enough running a lite version of Windows too. 4. Dedicated retro boxes like the NES/SNES classic. Just why bother? Yeah, it's officially licenced and yeah, it is aesthetically pleasing but really, you are just paying more than you would for a Pi and two SNES/Megadrive controllers and getting much less in terms of options.

My question is, do games load any faster? Until my recent purchase of a Switch, I haven't owned a console since the N64, because as a PC and console gamer, the early CD systems all had TERRIBLE load times, because they whey where putting 1x and 2x CD drives in them when 4x where already standard and 8 and 16x where fairly easy to get. I had friends who had them though so I still got a chance to play a few of those games back in the day, but I'd love to go back and play a bunch of stuff I missed (and do videos for them, giving reviews as a person not seeing through the eyes of nostalgia). If they don't load at the speed of snails.

@HowardAnthC6 жыл бұрын
I've got to disagree Pat. You are trading the actual hardware for a questionable emulation box and you are STILL using a disc drive, which will inevitably fail. The real solution is sd card based replacements for disc drives on the real consoles. Some are a bit expensive, but they are available for nearly every disc-based retro console at this point. Yes, it requires the extra step of reading the disc in your pc and ripping it to a sd card, but a least it's a lasting solution.

@Fender1786 жыл бұрын
Also what you guys do not realize is that having the emulator read the disc vs actual hardware is very different. If the emulation is not perfect or the system you are using for this thing to work specs are not up to par then it reading your original disc would slow down the emulation and the game play so much to the point the game is unplayable. This is why ripping images of your own discs is highly recommended and or stick to original hardware when it comes to disc based systems if you are using your original disc.

It's legal only if you own the games and the systems you are going to emulate. Also, they must be from the same region. I don't really understand how it's better than a software emulator, legally speaking. It's because you are using the actual physical media? If you own the physical media, you can download the rom or the image of the stuff you own.
@mysterythingx54986 жыл бұрын
@Pat the NES Punk Collecting and playing physical retro copies is complete lunacy. Most of these games (90%) are not worth replaying unless it's a master piece like Super Mario 3 or Ocarina of Time ,etc. Adopt a PC and play away for free. It's literally the Golden Age of gaming right now.
