The first game I ever worked on, "Riqa" was destined for the DD originally. As a proxy for not having the physical drive in the Studio, we developed the game over five cartridges, which held the 16+ cities we were building for the action RPG.

@@Colt45hatchback It's sad how the SimCity series died with the 2013 game (Basically Sim City 5, but a reboot due to the title?) due to the failure it was and the backlash it received (always online, considerable downgrade compared to 4, not very realistic, typical EA DLC policy etc.). Looks like Maxis is basically forced to do Sims for eternity, since that one sells like hot cakes... On a different note, there are actually mods for "Cities Skylines", basically the most well-known / best "modern" city builder, which allows you to enable First-Person-mode to walk and even drive around your city. There are of course a lot of limitations, many buildings, civilians etc. aren't designed to be viewed from first-person and SimCity 64 is probably still better in that regard. I doubt they would do that, but recently "Cities Skylines 2" was announced, and maybe the devs consider some Streets of Sim City side mode this time? Who knows.

Great vid Joe! Just a quick note: You actually can save 64DD games on an Everdrive. You just need to press reset before turning off the console. This is required to save on DD roms, even on an Everdrive X7. The F-zero expansion translation saves fine for me on my X7. Hope someone finds this useful!

I know this is a video that takes mostly a quick look at everything the 64DD offers and for that it's pretty good, you even opened the 64DD way more than Spawn Wave did, but I can't help but being very frustrated at how much you missed about all of the Mario Artist. They're way more than you think. Since I don't have a life, I'll talk about Mario Artist's features a little bit: - Paint Studio actually has different pens when you click several times on it, one of them actually does not have the anti-aliasing at all and would solve the problem that you had during drawing. The 3D World mode actually has a playable mode where you can explore the world in question and take photos, it's even how you unlock everything that you can retexture. - Talent Studio's Movie making mode is definitely something that takes a lot to understand, but to add your character into a movie, you need to go into the character selection menu in the movie mode, there's also a background selection menu, and then you can make a movie using those in its own editing menu where it gets a lot more complicated, somewhat robust in certain aspects, but also pretty limited at times. - Polygon Studio is where I think you missed way too much, I think you went into the Simple mode on the left which is indeed just editing premade stuff, while the Expert mode on the right provides way more options, including a full actual model making mode, and the same premade parts mode but way better where you can add way more to it instead of just editing what exists, and a diorama edit mode. The premade objects mode is where the minigames are, which I'm almost surprised how you didn't say it's where Wario Ware's concept originated. There's also a full open world mode in it, where you make use of vehicle parts to help you explore the world, to find more vehicle parts in that world that makes you able to explore further. (Honestly, a very underrated mode.) Polygon Studio is actually the game with the most content in it, there's a lot to do in it, but I can understand that it is not always easy to get it, especially when it's all in japanese, and even if I did translate them all into english, it's not always a lot easier to figure out. Also all of the Mario Artist games are compatible with each other and can import images, 3D models and stuff. About the 64DD cartridge port saving, it does not save back on the SD card if you use a 64drive, however on Everdrive 64, as in the official ones past version 2, the latest versions of the firmware should actually save back the content, IF you reset the console before turning it off. This is important. It does not save in real time, you need to reset first.
@That-Other-Dan
@That-Other-Dan Жыл бұрын
Sound Bomber and the whole open world part of Polygon Studio is so cool, and those are just hidden away in menus that aren't the most obvious, especially in Japanese. But man, that open world game is super neat and more people ought to at least try that sometime through emulation.
@GameSack
@GameSack Жыл бұрын
I feel bad that I missed that stuff in Polygon Studio as I would've really liked to have shown the open world, etc. Did I miss a switch somewhere to disengage the horrible music or change it? It really made me wanna turn that one off. I know that's the only Mario Artist title that wasn't developed by Nintendo themselves. I only had the 64DD for a few weeks.
@LuigiBlood
@LuigiBlood Жыл бұрын
@@GameSack You can actually change (and disable) the music too only in the modes of Expert mode, the crown mode on the main menu. Paint Studio is actually mostly developed by Software Creations, Nintendo having a directorial but kinda minor role in it, Talent Studio was done by Nintendo, and Polygon Studio is actually mostly done by Nintendo, the modelling code was done by Nichimen Graphics, who were known for making actual professional modelling software. Anyway if you have some time with a flashcart, I think my english translations of Mario Artist would be very helpful in the long run.
@GameSack
@GameSack Жыл бұрын
@@LuigiBlood Actually the Mario Artist Paint Studio translation was how I found out about the custom colors in that one. I knew your screen name looked familiar. A lot of the translations I tried on the Everdrive didn't seem to work right, maybe my Everdrive is too old? I think it's v2. If post v2 Everdrives can save the games as well, then I think it would be worth the investment for the Mario Artist stuff alone. That and F-Zero X Expansion Kit.

That expensive price was due to the expansion never been released in stores. Nope, you had to order it by mail. Great video as always. Seeing a new episode of Game Sack makes staying up late on a Saturday night a treat! IMO the 64DD could have been successful if it had been released 2 years earlier and had 50-100% more storage capacity available. Even the plain old Zip disks had 50% more storage space and those were released almost half a freakin' decade before the 64DD was! I'm sure Nintendo wanted the device and disks to be reliable which probably led to most of the delays but what they did release was too little and much too late!

I'm sure SOMEONE'S said it before me, but if not.....the N64 Mouse is a dangerous rabbithole. It actually has 100% compatability with the N64 library. The only caveat is it only has inputs for the D-Pad, A, and B. Yes, this cuts what it can do quite spectacularly, but for stuff like racing and certain FPS games, it's...actually kinda usable? I'd watch Stop Skeletons from Fighting's videos on the matter, if you’re skeptical.

You can make a Game Sack episode on the 8th gen consoles Joe. Starting with the mighty PlayStation 4 and its Pro, next the lowly Xbox One and its upgrade the One X. And last but certainly not least the 2nd highest selling console in history the almighty Nintendo Switch.

A couple of points I'd like to add about this video... I have an Everdrive 64 X7. I don't know about other flash farts, but on this one you can save your progress on these cartridge ports of 64DD games. You HAVE to hit reset before turning the system off, however, even though you don't need to do that otherwise. That's because it's writing to *the rom itself.* I could post my own rom of F-Zero X + Expansion Kit right now, and it'd still have my "CJ" shaped track on it. If you want to save on emulator, you need to just use the regular disc versions. Another thing. "Mario Artist Talent Studio" acts as a movie creation program. That character creator is basically just one half of the whole thing. "Mario Artist Polygon Studio" allows you to make custom models from scratch, I will add the caveat however that I doubt you'd be able to do anything with it because for god's sake you only have a N64 controller. It seems cumbersome. I tried and failed to model Sonic The Hedgehog's head.

I remember one of the Mario Artist games having a game mode with warioware like minigames, do you remember which one is it?

@@GenesHand Polygon Studio. It was quite a surprise when I found it, even the microgames would later be recycled for WarioWare.

It's criminal how F-Zero X Expansion Kit is still a 64DD exclusive.

For years, Nintendo has said that they couldn't think of new ideas for a future F-Zero game. The 64DD expansion kit shows two things that could work in a new game: online capability and a track editor. The Switch's touch screen would be perfect for the track editor mode, and Nintendo could have easily implemented it onto the Wii U or even the 3DS. Online has never been Nintendo's forte even now, but imagine a race against 29 other real players. Even just rereleasing F-Zero GX with these features would be enough to justify having Captain Falcon continue to appear in a Smash Bros. game. I'd rather that than yet another Mario Kart where a race is determined less on skill and more on luck.

Simcity 2000 was CRAZY addictive back in the day for the PC! I remember spending countless hours with that game. That 1st person mode is SUPER cool tho! Wish Simcity 2000 had that!

It did on the Playstation version but it wasn't very good. Just an automatic drive through the city with ugly graphics.

Very,very cool joe.....this is the one system I've always marveled at, yet new absolutely nothing about, thanks for the education. This has always been the rune stone of classic game systems to me.....I've seen it but had no idea what the hell i was looking at. The end skit was priceless as usual.

Fun fact: Polygon Studio has a mode which is a precursor to the WarioWare games.

Polygon Artist has a lot of weird side modes and minigames, and I've seen people make things like a 3D model of a Gamecube on that thing. But if you can't read Japanese the menus are a little difficult to get around. The racetrack minigame is some kind of Chicken Race minigame where you have to get your model to the end without falling over the cliff. Sound Bomber is literally Wario Ware before Wario Ware, even using the boombox from the first game. And there's Experiment World, an open world adventure thing where you take your model, drive it around a world where toasters give you tutorial tips and you get more parts that allow you to explore the world easier. There is a fan translation, too.

I remember hearing about how F-Zero X expansion set on the N64DD did have a track editor and that is definitely cool, but I didn't know that it also had a vehicle editor. It looks like F-ZERO GX For the GameCube maintained that vehicle editor. It's too bad that Nintendo has completely abandoned the F-ZERO franchise since there hasn't been one since GX on the GameCube or it's arcade counterpart AX or GP Legends on the GBA. I think most people who play as Captain falcon in the Super smash Bros games have probably never even played an F-ZERO Game and now Captain falcon is just known for being in Super smash Bros instead of his original franchise

The main takeaway from this episode is that the 64DD is clearly the best system to draw Greendog fan fiction.

There were some Games that were going to be made for the 64DD but were converted into a Cartridge Format due to the Poor Sales of the Add-On and there were also a few Expansions for Games like Ocarina of Time and Mario Party but were completely scrapped

I remember reading about this in EGM back in the day and getting excited about it. Mario Artist and F-Zero Expansion Kit sounded so cool. But alas, it failed before it even had a chance. A shame really...oh well.

Great analysis and review 😊 That’s one console that rarely gets the spotlight, so kudos for the history lesson 😎 BTW, bonus points for drawing Greendog, it’s funny, but surprisingly well done 👍🏻🤯

in an alternate timeline, the 64 DD came out on time and internationally, so a bunch of cancelled or converted games came out for it and the N64 actually had some decent rpgs. Also it gave Nintendo more confidence in the internet so they didn't avoid it like the plague on GameCube
