The Gold Standard of Evita: the brilliant Patti Lupone is the best.
@ADAMSIXTIES6 ай бұрын
1980. Although Patti LuPone was hailed by critics, she has since said that her time in Evita was not an enjoyable one. In a 2007 interview, she stated "Evita was the worst experience of my life," she said. "I was screaming my way through a part that could only have been written by a man who hates women. And I had no support from the producers, who wanted a star performance onstage but treated me as an unknown backstage. It was like Beirut, and I fought like a banshee."

It's always kind of pintless to compare so I'll just say this. Every singer brings their own gift to this song. Sarah Brightman's version from her album "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" was my first introduction to this song. Not my favorite version, for a few reasons, although undoubtedly very good. Madonna's version is the most vulnerable. Elaine page tells the story with perfect clarity and of course an amazing voice. But although I just saw this video, I have to say this version by Patti Lupone stands out. So powerful and direct, and easily the most operatic. She makes it look so effortless, even her tears of emotion feel genuine. Simply a stunning rendition. Bravo!

@Parker930 The title of the song comes from an epitaph on a plaque at Eva Perón's grave in the La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. The plaque was presented by the city's taxi drivers' union and roughly translates as: "Don't cry for me Argentina, I remain quite near to you."[6] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote "For years I have wondered, during 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina,' why we were not to cry. Now I understand: We need not cry because (a) Evita got everything out of life she dreamed of, and (b) Argentina should cry for itself. Even poor Juan Peron [sic] should shed a tear or two; he is relegated...to the status of a 'walker,' a presentable man who adorns the arm of a rich and powerful woman as a human fashion accessory."[7] The song's lyrics are a "string of meaningless platitudes" according to Rice, who felt that it worked as an emotionally intense but empty speech by a "megalomaniac woman" trying to win the favor of the Argentines. It features the lyrics "And as for fortune, and as for fame / I never invited them in / Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired / They are illusions" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Cry_for_Me_Argentina

Listening after watching Patti playing a "good witch" in "Penny Dreadful." She can embody any character with raw energy and truth. And her voice is non pareil. Brava!

I could not be more in love with this video. Patti’s beautiful face, the tears rolling, and especially the way she sings “all you have to do is look at me to know” SO emotionally! I get chills every time ❤️❤️❤️ one of the most talented stars of all time!!!

I remember being about 7 and the commercial would come on for Evita. I was mesmerized. I have loved her ever since. Finally got to see her show at a local theatre near where she grew up.

The ease with which she sings is mind-boggling. She makes it look so easy. 🤯
