I discovered this song when I was going through one of the worst times of my life...the loss of both parents, a divorce, homelessness, joblessness, and both sons leaving home for college and the Navy in the space of less than a year. The depression felt like a shroud of wet cement. But I held on. Wrote a lot of poetry, met others who made me realize that as bad as it was, it wasn't without hope. Songs like this spoke louder than the voices that said give up. I'm forever grateful for that.

Patty Griffin is a goddess. Period. She takes human angst and reworks it into something not just palatable but beautiful, sweet and smooth the whole way down; the very best an artist and wordsmith could hope for! And her audience; we're so fortunate to have her!

I recall some folks remarking "Nobody sings sad" like her. Guess that's why we love her. It's why I do.

This performance was actually my introduction to Patty. I got out of bed, grabbed a pen and paper, wrote down her name and bought 1000 Kisses the next day. Have been a fan since. As a matter of fact I’m taking my granddaughter to see her at the beautiful State Theater tomorrow night! ❤

Maybe one the most beautiful and tortured songs ever written. And, sung so masterfully!

"Now I don't want to beg you baby for, something maybe you could never give. Im not looking for the rest of your life, I just want another chance to live" gets me every time! Such an emotionally provoking song (and not all positive) but truely wonderful. First time seeing this live version as well for me and wow! What a presence Patty has. I still really like the animated video for this song too though mind, although it kept freezing towards the end so switched to the live version. I was not disappointed! What a track!

I moved to Austin in 1999 cause I was a fan on Patty and Shawn Colvin and I didn't realize this was such a small town back then cause I bumped into both of them not at some concert venue but at Central Market and Town Lake.

Torments of the heart, expressed in song - It's hard to listen to a hard hard heart Beating close to mine Pounding up against the stone and steel Walls that I won't climb Sometimes a hurt is so deep deep deep You think that you're gonna drown Sometimes all I can do is weep weep weep With all this rain falling down Strange how hard it rains now Rows and rows of big dark clouds When I'm holding on underneath this shroud Rain Its hard to know when to give up the fight Two things you want will just never be right Its never rained like it has to night before Now I don't want to beg you baby For something maybe you could never give I'm not looking for the rest of your life I just want another chance to live Strange how hard it rains now Rows and rows of big dark clouds When I'm holding on underneath this shroud Rain, oh rain Strange how hard it rains now Rows and rows of big dark clouds When I'm holding on underneath this shroud Rain Strange how hard it rains now Rows and rows of big dark clouds When I'm still alive underneath this shroud Rain Rain Rain

Only heard this great song on an episode of Bones. Season 1 episode 17, I've seen the episode several times. Was played in kind of a sad scene. I love this song. Will be looking for Patty Griffin's cds ❤❤

She did look a little nervous, almost missed the chord but recovered immediately. I was so in love with her during these years and learned a few of her songs. Rarely played them, could not do them any kind of Justice. She's touring now, I wish I could see her. No one like her in our universe.

skipper1971albe... FOR REAL this was LiVE! It's so OBVIOUS ,IF ONE LISTENS CLOSELY, THAT THIS WAS LiVE! .. PLUS ..Scroll back a bit to the person who commented that at very beginning she seemed a bit nervous, and they notice she had played her guitar o"at first" in an pposite direction than typical. PLUS..I've been blessed to see/hear Patty perform LiVE many times in Austin, and in this performance she was singing a slightly "alternate" version, in that her cadence was slower in one verse. Still exquisite! STILL Sounded LiVE AS CAN BE! 💘🌹💘
