As someone who haven't read the book and was confused of the scene of Paul's madness and "overreaction" when he had his vision in the tent. I was like: Hmm, it's gonna be a war among countless wars, why is he faulting himself for seeking revenge. Then that screenshot of 61 billions lives, countless planets destroyed and the fact that those are the most "conservatives" estimates... gave me a dreadful chill down my spine. Ok, that wasn't an overreaction after all... Time to read the books!
@TheCrapStudio2 жыл бұрын
Controversial opinion (No spoilers): Even after reading the books, I still don't really fault him for the Jihad. Considering the nature of the sacrifice needed to prevent it, I can sympathise with Paul's dilemma and even understand his decision.
@godhand2912 жыл бұрын
I really love that scene in the book. If I recall he sees two major paths that he could take the universe down. In one he joins the Fremen and there is galactic jihad. In the other he walks up to Baron Harkonnen and says "hello grandfather". The later path leads to places "far too terrible to even imagine". It's chilling to think about, that there are fates worse than 61 billion deaths.

Paul is the "stereotypical" hero, but also serves as a cautionary tale of elevating a single person into something more than human. With all his powers, he still flinched and didnt push through the golden path. Dune Messiah is mostly panned, but only because it serves to deconstruct his meteoric rise from the first book and is thus essential in the actual greater story of things. Leto II though is hard to imagine as the true hero since he subjugated countless humans for a long ass time. The true hero of Dune is just that - in order for humans to reach their *true* potential, humanity needs to discard the idea of a single savior and instead, cultivate and trust in individual goodness no matter how minute in the grand order of things.

@randomobserver81682 жыл бұрын
Well, he's the hero in the sense that he's the original protagonist, and his original motives are to avenge his fallen father, punish the harms inflicted on his mother and the love of his life, and on the people he has adopted and who have adopted him, and retaliate for the conspiracy that destroyed his House, against the chief conspirators, the Padishah Emperor and House Harkonnen. All excellent motives. Even overthrowing the Corrino Dynasty entirely and seizing the empire has its virtues, it's how the Empire came to be in a previous act of war and revolution. And the empire had it coming. From the Fremen POV, genociding the outworlders must have seemed fair return for the empire's attempt to wipe them out. Ideally, all would have been done for fewer than 61 billion fatalities, but, again, the Fremen probably figure the numbers are beside the point. The emperor tried to wipe them out, they wipe out the people of the empire. Or enough. IF nothing else, it gives rare clarity on the size of the empire, that it can sustain losses like that. On the whole, Paul's son must be considered the hero of the saga as a whole, with Paul as merely the tragic antihero forerunner and scene-setter. And by the end, he knows it.

He didnt really try to lessen his impact lol, read Paul of Dune. He ends up disguising himself and enlisting with a lower less well known Fedaykin legion (around 2-4 years into the jihad) and heading to another planet marked in the jihad. His reasoning was to get a better idea of what his warriors experienced on the ground and to get away from the keep. Basically he ends up slaughtering countless other fighters in hand to hand "seeing a red veil that even rivalled the strongest spice trances" (not an exact quote). Its not said if Paul knows about what this planet or its people did but he actively participated in the killing. He later allows a crowd of arakeen locals to literally rip a man limb from limb in a square as a punishment/demonstration. This wouldn't be absolutely horrible as the man had done some super messed up stuff to deserve it, but its noted that there were other men with him that were more than likely innocent, and paul allows them to be brutally killed as a message and a way to please his people/the houses. Its shown how Chani is disgusted by this and Paul is very grim, but he 100% furthered the jihad.

Truths about the entire 6 books of Dune Chronicles (a warning for new readers): There is no such thing as "hero" in this saga. There are just men and women who do right and terribly wrong things at the same time. This is a fictional period from the history of humanity's fictional future. This is not a black and white fairy or folk tale. This is not a story of a flawed but strong hero who is eventually redeemed by divine entities. So, there are characters but not absolute heroes and villains. This saga contains no actual jokes but a little bit sarcastic wits (most of them are very political). It has not absolute happy ending(s). However, there are always beacons of hope of course. This is not a space opera or a space tale. It is opposite of Star Wars and Flash Gordon. It does not reflect emotions directly. It gives them in a more disguised way. Thus, it is not like LOTR and GOT. So, if you want to get sentimental, you should look inner meanings of the words and use your imagination excessively. There is no rain of emotions but latent and slow injection of them. It takes itself very very very seriously so narrative style is quite serious and systematic. It has a bunch of weird concepts. Dune saga is a dramatic flow of life of its characters. And lastly it is not a Lawrence of Arabia story. There are some similar themes, but, no, Paul's journey and personality is completely different from that of real historical Lawrence. T.E. Lawrence was a high-ranked military officer of British Empire which has imperialistic and diplomatic purposes on Ottoman Empire. He tempted Arabic tribes against Ottoman government (with his mentor and mother figure Gertrude Bell). That was a political struggle between Britain and Ottoman state. An Empire versus another Empire. In Dune, there is only one state, one empire, one emperor, one throne (the shortcomings of such kind of system is discussed in God Emperor of Dune). Fremens are The Emperor's subjects too. Corrino Emperor exploits and plots against his own subjects, whether they are noble or plebian. It is not like overseas colonization or state vs. state. But there is same amount of suffering. FH inspired from Middle Eastern-Arabic cultural elements from T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom and he thought that if Lawrence had been killed during Arabic revolt, his bigotic followers would have seen him as kinda a prophet and this is a disgusting thing. But he got many many elements from Saharan Berber Tuareg culture and from Ancient Egypt. He also got some elements from Caucasian history to form House Atreides and Paul's journey. He was inspired from Lesley Blanch's The Sabres of Paradise (1960). It is biography of Imam Shamil, aka Lion of Daghestan, a noble Caucasian Turkish chieftain and counsellor of Ghazi Mullah (early leader of the resistence) who put Caucasian tribes together and led series of resistence (1834-1859) against oppressing politicies of Tsar and Russian invasion of that area (1817-1864). This topic is even discussed in Reddit! Plus, I think Atreides kindjal dagger comes from traditional Caucasian short sword called 'khanjali.' Tolstoy was one of the favourite writers of Herbert (he is even mentioned in Chapterhouse:Dune) and he had a novel about Hadji Murat, one of the leaders of Caucasian resistance. In the movie Caucasian elements of House Atreides was replaced by Japanese culture (ok, no problem).

*Spoiler alert for the later books* What do you make of Leto II? His rule permanently traumatizes humanity, but also prevents an even more horrible total human extinction event and even ensures that humanity will never again become the slaves or pawns of a prescient being. He also sacrifices himself, as his poem about Ghanima that his enemies use to destroy him makes clear. He didn't enjoy being a god, he was lonely the whole time after Ghanima died. Should we reject the sacrifice of the Worm God and wish that it had never occurred even if it means accepting and choosing the ultimate annihilation of humanity? If he was right to do what he did, does that make him a hero? Is Duncan Idaho right to reject him?

He actually is the hero though? Just not in the strictest sense of the word. He did what he did so that eventually someone might lead them out of the system that had been built. He knew he couldn’t do it all in his own lifetime, but he set the path for the Fremen to finally be free. He may have not been the one to do it, but without him it would have never happened. And it was no accident on his part either.

Just like Chani said, the prophecy is how they enslave us. This was not a woke edit by Villeneuve, it is quite literally one of the themes of Book 2 and Book 3 of Dune. A lot of commentary on how the Fremen culture was bastardised, and how becoming the main power basically destroyed their traditions. The terraforming too.

Hello guys! Genuinely great to see that this random video i made to post on reddit has gathered so many views! Awesome! When i made it, i had just finished reading the first Dune book and the movie was released one week and a half earlier, i think. So i was heavy on the Dune mood. So, that's why i posted this video in my backup channel. It's great to see how much the fanbase has expanded and i trully love seeing the in-depth discussions in the comments of this video. What do you guys think about the recent news of the second Dune movie? They seem really awesome! I have also been reading about the new Dune MMO that's going to be released. By the way, this video is not monetized. The incredible "Little Dark Age" cover that plays on this video was made by Queen Udasco and he just released an album.
