Of all the Margin Call actor/actress interviews, Paul's interview has by far the deepest understanding and most accurate depiction of what happened in the realworld during the timeframe the movie was set in.

Brilliant film that came out too early. I don’t think enough people realized the amount of fuckery involved in the banking crisis. If this film was released today it would be an absolute blockbuster. Excellent dialogue excellent performances from a quality ensemble. Compared to Wall Street this stands alone at the summit

Now that he mentioned it, Margin Call really has that David Mamet feel to it.

superb accent change (in the film) reflecting an ex-pat Brit having lived in the States for a few years. When my brother comes back for family holidays, he sounds like John Wayne for a few days but it soon wears off. And when he get back, all his mates call him Prince Charles as he has reverted back to "Brit"

There's a nice line near the end, during the fire sale sequence, where one of the buyers suspects he's being sold a pup by MBS and calls him a "limey bastard".

Yeah, I have the same problem. Living abroad with a German girlfriend and speaking my native language mostly with Germans (since they are 10 times more than us), everybody calls me a "Piefke" (not-so-nice Austrian term for Germans) when I come home to Vienna.

in the film, his character exposes the hypocrisy of the common people. in the interview, his (as his real self) exposes the hypocrisy of the banker-wankers.

There is a distinct divide between the ideologies of Society, coming together for mutual benefit and survival and the Business industry where it is Every Man For Himself. These two are opposing ideologies. One must destroy the other unless there is some kind of compromise or marriage of the two. They both cannot exist at the same time.

The “common man” was buying a house for no money down that he couldn’t afford. Not defending anyone, but there was plenty of greed to go around.
@nkt1
@nkt1 Жыл бұрын
In the UK, there was, and still is, a huge amount of pressure on people to buy a house, any house. In most cases, if you reach middle age without having achieved home ownership, this is considered a fairly serious failure.
@darmok072
@darmok072 Жыл бұрын
@@nkt1 interestingly not in many other countries though. Here in Germany the perception is somewhat different. Don't know what it is about the UK that causes that view?
@nkt1
@nkt1 Жыл бұрын
@@darmok072 Home ownership has always been seen as desirable in the UK, and private tenants don't have many rights, certainly not compared to Germany. Until the late 1970s, social (state-owned) housing was plentiful, much of it of good quality, tenants wouldn't be evicted except if they behaved badly, and the state was a reasonably good landlord. In 1979, the Thatcher government allowed social tenants to buy their property for a very low price. Since then, most of the best social housing properties have been sold, and what's left is the least desirable, and demand for it vastly outstrips supply, because it's cheap, and secure. Thus, if you don't want to be stuck in expensive, rented property, you have no choice but to buy a property, any which way you can. Plus, houses appreciate in value, so simply owning property all but guarantees an increase in wealth over time. My parents bought a house for £80,000 in 1988, it's now worth close to half a million.

In this case the greed was on the bank, because they made schemes like ajustable rates, interest only sort of loans that were purposely designed to lure poor people in

I'm not really sure if Margin Call is underrated, or underappreciated, but it's really a very good performance, by almost all characters. If anything, I'd say the only lackluster performance is by Demi Moore, who's fame and reputation are more of a distraction.

What I find very interesting about what he is saying is how easily it translates to unregulated government spending and escalating debt. Making hay while they can which a totally myopic outlook as to how this will affect the country long term. Sounds like Washington could learn something from the mistakes of Wall Street.

at 2:25 "the myopic quality these people have..." Brilliant, Paul, you summed up the greed and shortsightedness of tens thousands of us, financial markets sharks, piranhas and even more numerous assorted pilot fish (operations, middle, "risk" departments...). But know that we're still operating all over the world, full swing again, with not a care except for ourselves. And believe me, the governments, central banks and regulators are on OUR side. From a trader. With love.

'Make hay while the sun shines ...'?That's their job. They have to be focused and selfish. Psychopathic?What the main characters in this film knew is that all systems fail. That's a cosmic rule. With finance and gambling the trick is predicting when the failure will happen, or, better still, cause the failure on your terms. Stop the music when you are close to a chair!Modn stock markets are virtual trading arenas. When gold was a base trade was limited by holdings but gold is no longer required. Stock market trading is algebra based and as we all know there are more numbers in the universe than there are atoms so VT can go on for ever, or, until someone decides they can get more out of a collapse[readjustment!] than they can by continuing with the current method. Governments encourage it because every trade has a tax transaction. That's why governments bail out banks. Lots more too it but you get the picture.

Probably because you already had two non-yanks (him and Irons) in high positions and they didn’t want another. Plus, Aussie accent don’t tend to do well in a financial environment. Maybe on a beach 😂
