Paul Brady = LEGEND!!! 30 years on this song still has the power to make the hair on my neck stand up. Full of anger and pain and longing. Telling the Irish story in 4 mins of pure musical magic.

I first heard this on "Bringing it All Back Home" decades ago and it still kills me. Nobody gets inside a song like Paul. And how tasty is Donal's bouzouki accompaniment? Passion and artistry.

That's what led me to this live version Steve. I remember watching it on that programme and still get goosebumps, watching it. Have the vinyl at home. What a brilliant combination of Paul and Donal!

Moving music from the heart- he captures the dilemma perfectly, the Irish immigrant despised in his adopted land yet unable to go home financially, or emotionally in the end.

Those who emigrated in the 40s, 50s, caught the by then 'better' Irish trad music scene over in London. They brought over the music. By the sixties London had a good Irish traditional music scene. It got popular again in Ireland by the very late sixties into the seventies.

you can't afford Kilburn now... I lived there just as it was changing. I used to meet the old fellas in the pub who were in their 70s and 80s and were still talking about going home. Of course they never did, I did, regretted it and came back
@ruairimonophthalmos54584 жыл бұрын
@@loquayrocks could you tell us more about the time that it was changing? Why did you end up regretting going back to Eire?

Saw a list recently in one of the Irish newspapers where someone gave their top 10 emigration songs and NBTSOS wasn't included! Ridiculous.
