Beautiful voice still. Does anyone know what happened to the other original session musicians who were on Sugar Baby Love but didn't go on to be in the Rubettes?

John and Alan both played on sugar baby love as session musicians. The other members - Tony, Bill and Pete were recruited by John. Paul Da Vinci was never in The Rubettes. He provided the vocals on the single but had a solo deal at the time so chose not to be in the band. Obviously his solo career was unsuccessful as he keeps on churning this out as his only claim to fame.

I'm not sure, but all I know is that the only musician than continued on to become part of the Rubettes was John Richardson, the drummer. The rest of The Rubettes never sang on the original.

heavenly 48, sorry but you are definitely wrong here. Alan never sang on the original. The only member of The Rubettes who did sing on the original was the drummer, John Richardson. Paul Da Vinci has made a comment on one of the performances that he appeared on, on German TV that Alan never sang on the original that became number 1.

Actually Alan Williams did not sing or play a single note on "Sugar baby love"and was not even at the studio when it was recorded. John Richardson played drums and did the speaking part. "People take my advice" ect. I sang the A and the B side of the record, and some BV's on both. I also suggested that the high vocal part be sung an octave (8 note)higher than it had been written. For your information I wrote produced and sang "Your Baby Ain't Your Baby Anymore" , which was also a hit, then in the 80's I was the featured voice onTight Fits' hit Back to the 60's pt 2.Doing most of the lead and backing vocals. I also starred in the West End production The Who's "Tommy", to rave reviews," Truly exceptional"Time Out Magazine, and various other major theatrical productions, and have written Classical pieces that have been performed in London venues including The Purcell Rooms and The Wigmore Hall. The Hope concerto . 8 million people bought the single "Sugar baby Love' which launched the Rubettes' career ,when they mimed to it on TV, and the song is still the one that is synonymous with the band, and still the song their audiences wait to hear, when they appear live. My career is not over,so watch this space. Heavenly48 Whoever you are.

Foxyh66 You know Jack Shit. There was no 'Rubettes' per se. Several tracks were recorded at Lansdown as demos. Da Vinci was the vocalist. As an afterthought and because SBL had a quality to it, it was decided to form a band. Da Vinci was contracted to Penny Farthing and opted out. Alan Williams and others were drafted in and when SBL hit the charts, he mimed to Da Vinci's vocal. Without doubt, SBL made the 'Rubettes' and Da Vinci has every right to make sure that this information is available, after all, it was another music industry con on the wider public. Incidentally, Da Vinci is a much respected session musician who has sung on 7,000 songs. I'd say that is a good CV.
