It´s been so hard for me to discover tonight that my favorite song of all times, since when I was nine years old it´s not from The Rubettes. This man, Paul Prewer (Paul DaVinci) is THE REAL VOICE. Totally unknown for me, I´m surprised, confused and feel very very sad for him. He is the VOICE. And fery few people know that. HE MUST BE RECOGNIZED and receive all the merits he deserves. Thank you, Paul for the present of the most wonderful voice for me of all times. Your voice really impressed me like no other in the world when i was a child...and now you did it again, 42 years on. If i haven´t seen this video tonight, I would still be thinking that was processed. And finally I discover that your voice it´s original, natural, genuine and pure. And all this been 65 years old. I have no words, Paul. Thank you, for exist, and bring me the most wonderful memories of my live each time I listen your song, your voice and your falsetto. You will always be part of my best feelings.........forever.

Had the pleasure of meeting Paul at Warner's Dovercourt in the 80's. Very self-effacing, unassuming Man, with a fabulous voice. I used to do the 'Green Bar' after hours, singing and so on, and after the Rubettes were on, he came up and entertained us there too. Had the pleasure of playing guitar/keyboards for him on a couple of songs. GREAT guy!! Thanks Paul!!

Bickerton & Waddington (composers) tried to sell the song to existing groups but all turned it down. So they decided to publish the demo recording (by studio musicians). In the mean time they put a group together. The first to be invited were the studio musicians. Nearly all of them said no, including Paul; therefore Alan Williams took his place. I think only John Richardson (the drummer) said yes. All their other records were really played and sung be the Rubettes as we know them. No fraud!

Yes I have also seen those clips, but, be assured the original record was produced with Paul's voice. There is a lot more to that song than just THAT top falsetto section - Paul was able to reach all the top and lower notes in perfect tune which, at that time, the other singers were not able to do 40 years ago.

hi Steve, yes it is a classic and I really enjoyed the gig I saw him at although there were hardly any people there sadly as it was the first time YESTERDAY ONCE MORE held their 70's weekend at Brean Sands Unity Farm. However, he went down really well and was a true star with an amazing voice. I do have some more clips (some uploaded) for you to enjoy. I wish he played live more, I would definitely be happy to pay to see and hear him on a more regular basis.

See I was lead to believe that Paul sang the falsetto and Alan sang the rest. That was in 1974-5 ish. The Rubettes were the first live band I ever saw live. I was sitting in the second row with my mum. Alan sang the song brilliantly and when he waved to me I was in heaven....that SMILE! Iwas about 11 at the time.

Alan Williams sang 'Sugar Baby' live during performance and recorded the track used on top of the pops. Paul Da Vinci's voice is used on the 'Sugar Baby' love single - but not on the album. Alan Williams was an excellent choice as front man for the Rubettes and Paul Da Vinci has a lot of success as a session vocalist. His voice can be heard on many records that made it into the top twenty. His vocal range is amazing. He wanted success as a solo star. It is true that Sugar Baby Love was the only no 1 hit single for the Rubettes group and the record uses the Voice of Paul Da Vinci - the record was not selling until the group led by Alan Williams appeared on top of the Pops - call it team work.

There is absolutely no question about it! Paul recorded the original song as a Demo track which was later performed by a group created to perform it. The Rubettes' singer couldn't reach anywhere near the top notes so the company distributed the 'original' voice of Paul. I have known Paul since he was 14, and we were singing together in a schoolboy group before he turned professional. More than 40 years later and Paul's voice still amazes me: Happy Days!

I was the guy who booked Paul Prewer ( Da Vinci) for the session with John Richardson ( drummer) I worked at ATV music .. booked session musicians for Wayne Bickerton who wrote Sugar Baby Love with Tony Waddington.. I personally went on to have many hits myself No 1 & top ten in the states on Billboard .. Paul had an amazing falsetto..

Alan lo canta muy bien , solo que el tiene una voz más dulce ,lo escuché cantar acapela. Y paul lo hace más alto también lo escuche hay un video donde canta cuando es joven a mis oidos ya parece ópera . Sin embargo en la voz de Williams suena dulce y amerita el sentido de la letra. Es cierto el falsete de paul es buenísimo 👏 pero a mi me gusta alan williams como lo canta. El también lo canta y a mi parecer le sienta bien por tener una voz dulce. Es mi opinión 😊😊❤

That's not the reason why Paul never fronted the Rubettes, he was under contract as a solo performer at the time, so couldn't join the band. It would be very true to say that The Rubettes were the first Milli Vanilli act with Alan Williams miming to the vocals of Paul Da Vinci.
