I'm pretty sure its not suction, but only that when the blade is thrust in flesh the friction is not noticed, where as pulling it out slowly after muscles have spasm is a different story.. feels like suction but no vacuum occurs.The Iklwa story and sound is still amazing!!

When stabbed the surrounding muscles will often contract, making pulling out require more force, I think this might be considered 'suction' by the feel of it. As far as sound goes, a blade should make a sound going in and out as it slices flesh, tendons, scrapes bone...
@TheJerry8347 жыл бұрын
Don Bishop Musles contracting around the cavity would create the suction on the blade.

I wish someone can compare this weapon with the Mediterranean gladius. I'd do it my self. Only one problem. I can't.
@GenesisXTRM3 жыл бұрын
The thing alot of people don't seem to understand about the Iklwa is that the handle construction is just as important as the blade. The blade, long, flat and wide. Almost as long as the handle, more likened to a very short sword with no hilt than a traditional spear head. The handle, short, longer than the blade, but only by about a quarter length, with, and this is the key, an almost bell shaped end on it, THIS design does not have this. This is to help the hand from sliding off when pulling the spear out of an opponent, once the handle may be slick with blood. It should NOT resemble a simple spear that has been cut in half. This is NOT an Iklwa...

I have an assegai for last ditch defense of my home. I have a long narrow hallway to the bedrooms. if I'm out of ammo, anyone that is left and coming for me or mine will pay a price. Like the gladius, the assegai is a brilliant close melee weapon. Mine is a longer version by about a foot, which makes it an ideal two-handed thrusting spear in close confines. The Cold Steel stamped lawnmower blade is a joke compared to a well made, forged long-leaf spear head. The steel made by the Zulu was often just as good as the British bayonets.

Exactly why I'm getting this. My unit is a long rectangle that opens up into my living room. Can't slash in here without hitting a wall so I will toss this thing like a missile or just run with all my body weight behind it. Had someone try to bust in my unit a few weeks ago and thought this would be the best way to catch a body if it came down to it.

@@RaneBane Do not run at them. Keep the weapon between you and their reach as best you can. Use both hands, with the spear over your strong shoulder in a retracted position so it is ready for an instant thrust and cannot be easily grabbed. Do some research on the bayonet drill of the 1750's. Soldiers were trained to hold the muskety level with the ground, but over the right shoulder, right hand behind the butt plate, left hand just forward of the trigger guard, weapon fully rearward in a "ready harpoon" position. The thrust would increase the range by almost three feet and cannot easily be blocked or parried. There is a method behind the use of a thrusting spear. Otherwise, you're just fighting like a barbarian savage, which were defeated by more well trained armies over ma ny centuries. Practice hitting a paper plate. Or, a pork loin. You'll learn your range that way, and you'll learn speed. You can always cook the pork.

@@OutnBacker i like to think of myself as more of a berserker than a barbarian tyvm. Lol, its a long hall and I will need to get down it as quick as possible. Soon as you start thinking about melee its kind of over with. I have had people try to take my life before and I wasn't in control. Its all about breathing and kinetic energy. You wont even feel getting stabbed unless there is alot of force behind it. Unless its an artery you're just going to keep going and if these people have a gun im trying to get them back on the other side of my door as quick as possible. I probably won't get to throw it enough to be effective with it as a thrower but, my idea is to lance someone body check them at the same time. I have a 200lb crossbow I have been reloading everyday. I think best case scenario is I put a 400gr bolt downrange with a broad head on it and maybe get 2 at the same time. Then I can get all Casey Jones on anyone else.

Yeah pulling a blade out of someone is really easy. There isn't any "suction" or anything like it. It slides right out. And the name of the spear isn't thw sound it makes, it literally means "spear". It can vary a bit based off of the tribe and dialectic, but in general it just means spear.
@bozzskaggs1123 жыл бұрын
I've had this "discussion" vis-a-vis the blood grove in a knife. Blood grove!!!??? Sorry, I meant fuller. How many times have people said the fuller was put on a blade to break suction while completely ignorant of the process of smithing blades and the need for swords to be lightweight and still rigid as well as creating a wider blade with less steel... The fact that there are dead men killed by small in stature women and multiple stab wounds to the torso using a kitchen knife with no fuller means nothing to the blood grove fanciers. Oy vey. Sorry to go on like that. I did not know that the name of the weapon simply translates to spear. The easiest answer is so often the correct one. And for our next discussion we'll discuss how a sawed off shotgun with a 12" bbl spreads the shot pattern out 300% over an eighteen inch bbl with no regard to choke (to be fair the powder charge still burning so quickly out of the bbl it looks like an explosion might open the pattern a bit.). Somehow the pattern is huge and it still cuts a man in half from across the room. Lee Child got this wrong in a Jack Reacher book. Peace, thru superior fire power.

Tobi The Viking While this statement is true, I doubt it would be feasible in the environment. I mean, European plate armour was so good that a wide variety of interesting weapons had to be devised to circumvent its effectiveness, but even the most stalwart soldier would be at a disadvantage after trying to fight in full plate under the African sun.
