Paul Gauguin: A collection of 283 paintings (HD)
Description: "Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin, the most exotic of the Post-Impressionists, was born in Paris, France. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian woman, Gauguin spent his early childhood in Peru, attended a boarding school in France, and was a merchant seaman before becoming a stockbroker's assistant in 1871. An occasional painter at first, Gauguin frequented the Nouvelle Athenes Café where he met Pissarro and the Impressionists, whose works he purchased.
Gauguin had married in 1873, and it was not until 10 years later that he decided to give up the business world and devote himself to art. After a period in Rouen where he stayed with Pissarro, Gauguin went to Copenhagen with his Danish wife, only to leave his family forever a few months later. Gauguin was past age 35 and almost penniless, though a loan from Degas, who approved of his theories on the importance of line, permitted him to go to Pont-Aven. At Pont-Aven Gauguin and Emile Bernard would develop Synthetism, a style in which the expression of ideas and emotions are more important than naturalistic representations, and flat color areas reminiscent of Japanese woodcuts are outlined by heavy black lines in the manner of cloisonné enamels or stained-glass windows.
Gauguin, abandoning his earlier Impressionism, painted in this manner and also made ceramics and wood carvings to earn money. These were decorative, finely conceived Art Nouveau pieces, with a symbolism learned from Puvis de Chavannes, whom he had also admired. In 1887, Gauguin made an unsuccessful trip to Martinique to search for a primitive way of life. He spent 1888, the year of his great Synthetist work "The Yellow Christ", in Arles with Vincent van Gogh. This adventure ended in near tragedy, as Vincent van Gogh exhibited signs of madness. Gauguin returned shortly to Brittany before leaving for Tahiti on his constant quest for the simple life and the peace of mind he would never really find.
Gauguin's style, developed in the South, is a fusion of Oriental influences, personal symbolism, strong design, warm color, and musically rich expression that offers a spiritual image of the creative artist constantly seeking the unattainable. Gauguin remained in Tahiti until 1893, when poor health and lack of funds forced his return to Paris. He remained there until 1895, when he again settled in Tahiti. Gauguin's stay there ended in 1901 when he became seriously ill with syphilis and in trouble with the French authorities. He moved to the Marquesas, seeking an easier and cheaper life. His health, unfortunately, deteriorated further, but he continued to paint until he died on May 8, 1903."

Today I wandered completely alone through the room holding 7 Gauguin’s at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was a moment I truly cherished, to be completely alone with a room full of masterpieces has an entirely different effect than viewing with a crowded, if even sparsely populated gallery. I was inspired tonight to view thisartwork. Once again, outstanding work on this channel.

Looking at artworks of Gauguin is such a great experience. Looking through gauguins eyes and experiencing an adventure with him is something only painting can do. It teaches you what was important to him, what made him happy. Utopia is just a place where we are surrounded by thinks that make us feel good. And those paintings should definitely be a part of that. And everything he shows on them.

wow !!! Gaugin was very prolific, he painted a lot, and the naturalism of his scenes is unparalleled up to that point in time and maybe not even since . . people, animals, landscapes, -effectively he could and did paint everything or anything, and he did so with breathtaking and graceful draftsmanship....i just never quite realized his mastery and volumnous work quite so much till now and it really seems to lay bare all the endless conjecture about his biographical life, and place it on the way side. The work speak's for itself, and the drama of his life is actually left bare and weak in comparison

The Man was born to paint! You can see it in his early works sometimes I feel kind of sorry for that type of individual. I can understand that some would praise his paintings or dislike them. I like most of them. Sadly aTragic end for another genius. I reckon he paid his dues.

These compilations are wonderful and wonderfully instructive for all that the inevitably compare unfavorably with actually viewing the original works, (not least because of the complete loss of texture and scale when viewed on computer display,) but not least because they provide an otherwise inaccessible overview and context for the relatively small number of works that are usually take to be either representative or his masterpieces. It's also far easier to understand after reviewing all these pictures why so many people, myself included regard Gauguin as a Symbolist rather than an Impressionist. Anyway, half an hour well spent.

Gaugin is a prodigy, his paintings of the paradise like island in the Pacific truly captures the lush greenery, tropical fruits, beautiful natives, the simplistic way of life & a certain charm/ attraction to an unspoilt island in all its glory. Just mesmerising.

In today's Society, especially, one feels, with in the E.U. and the U.S.; Monsieur Gauguin would be readily posted on the Megan List, and most assuredly be fleeing 'child sexual abuse charges', with his paintings of 'Under-aged Girls' LMAO....

It seems there were no men in the French Polinesia...Beautiful pure natives sold well at the time...Of course some flower is included on the model..No wonder: the ruined stock exchange broker knew the value of things and how to sell to get by. Theo Van Gogh had to store his brother´s unsold paintings, while selling some Gauguins at modest prices.

At first glance one can see Paul Gauguin's works to be full of color and share a vibrant and foreign perspective of other cultures and traditions. However under closer observation audiences can see the nuanced details within the works that share a much darker story, and quite literally paint a picture of fetishization, predatory tendencies, and ethnocentrism. Paul Gaugin is a artist known for his very colorful impressionist works of art, that often depict Pacific Islander groups with large amounts of detail, and traditionally focusing on a naked female subject. From an anthropological point of view his works, and studies abroad are very similar to Arm Chair Anthropology, as many of his works praise the idea of the “Noble Savage” and further push the continuation of cultural appropriation, and colonization at the hands of Western powers. The issue with his works and the messages they convey is that it only tells a single story from a Western perspective leaving many factors of ethnically diverse groups out. And with the continuation of works like these it reciprocates a fetishization of other cultures in which people become fascinated with a group of people. This is harmful in many ways as society deems their traditions, and culture to be a costume that can be tried on and discarded. This further promotes harmful stereotypes of diverse populations that can not be encapsulated by a single painting, or story.
