It's just an opinion everyone. Don't get triggered by any guitarist's opinion about what is better. If you are a guitar player that still thinks in terms of "vs" then you still need time to decompress from all the competition that is circling around you. Everyone gravitates towards those genres which they emotionally connect with most.

He's actually playing jazz when he calls it "blues". Jazz is indeed much more sophisticated. He's crossing the line from one to the other without making the distinction.
@samme799 ай бұрын
Which is his point... you can play sophisticated blues and it's still blues. That's the beauty of the blues because you can play it simply with pentatonic or you can play it with more. The simple harmonic pattern of the blues allows such freedom. But it's still blues at the end of the day and jazz is deeply rooted in the blues too

I think it's important for all musicians to share their thoughts on various genres, especially when, in Gilbert's case, he's mastered them all. Metal scales can be a bit monotonous after a while and blues is, in my view, far more expressive because of the way it is played. But as an entire genre of music, metal is where one finds far more complex time signatures, chord progressions and creative composition, overall. Great interview.

Its funny because I started playing blues after improvising with Rumba Flamenca. Basically in Flamenco you have a tapado which is playing guitar percussively by muting strings with your fretting hand and for some reason I started playing "blues chords" (I flamenco we use alot of voicings) and it sounded as sort of funky blues. Thats how I started playing blues lol.

Warning! this comment section its pretty salty Im gonna give my honest opinion about it, this looks like the typical discussion of which genre is best, i always hate when people pigeonhole the music, and they do it just to say that his favorite genre is the best, did you see guitar solos and distortion and the importance of guitar in other genres?, without blues we wouldn't have metal, metal pretty much was heavy blues rock for most of the seventies until NWOBHM came along and speed everything up, i love the power of metal and the feeling of blues, and sometimes the tables turned, some metal bands has a lot of feelings and blues players has a lot of power. i love blues and i love metal. i hate listening to bends each 3 seconds aswell as i get bored of listening to 10 minutes of mindless shredding, Paul is clearly just giving his opinion with words like "to me" is obvious, you shouldn't take his toughts as the certain truth, he is just a normal person (although some would think so)

People who exemplify bands like AAL or Periphery should realize that this video is probably very old judging by how Paul looks a lot younger than he looks nowadays. Those bands (who don't fit into Paul's generalizations here) were not around here when this video was recorded Besides, his point is not 'metal sucks', but rather, blues has much more room for creativity because it is not as scooped of a genre like metal is. Which I, as a relatively experienced player in both genres, would agree with hands down.

I disagree with the notion that metal is harmonically limited. What i do agree with that metal when it comes to that metal still has to be explored in that avenue. The emotion of blues comes also from a different place than metal. And especially in the more agressive sounding metal, you can have some great riffs with emotion in it. But the best metal guitarists know how to break out of those limits
@LoreAccurateHusky4 жыл бұрын
Actually, he's wrong about metal being limiting, it's really his perception of metal that's limited. I've heard many guitarists play unique phrases through key changes, atonal harmony, and chromatic scales. There are endless possibilities but he just can't personally see it. Look at bands like Periphery and The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza who blend different keys together or play outside of any diatonic scale to create interesting phrases that communicate ideas that blues licks couldn't dream of.

But metal is rooted in the blues. Rock is rooted in blues music and metal is rooted in rock music. Metal is blues with the distortion turned up to fuck you levels with an emphasis on the accidentals to make it sound darker. Rock makes use of the Pentatonic scale right? Well the blues scale is just the pentatonic scale with that extra flattened 5th note between the 4th and 5th to add an extra colourful embellishment. Heavy Metal uses the same blueprint, but changes the focus. If you go back to the song black sabbath, widely considered the first heavy metal song (don't listen to this video, most people do not consider Stairway a metal song anymore) Black Sabbath was Tony Iommi going "what would happen if I put emphasis on that flattened 5th note in the blues scale?" Well, play a root note and that flattened 5th and then you get the tritone - the "Devils note", or interval, which is where the connection with the satanism and metal comes from, it's literally rooted in the music itself because that was the whole point, it's emphasising the blues in a way that makes it sound evil. Metal then evolved it's use of using embellishing notes that aren't in the scale for extra emphasis by adding the flattened second note as well. Play an E chord followed by an F chord? That's METAL. Metal is all about taking those scales and breaking them, you're not confined by them as Paul Gilbert here says, just listen to Slayer, when you hear a slayer solo, does it sound like that's confined to a scale? No it's just a random load of crazy notes, but it's METALLLLL so who cares. I dig Paul, but he's really missed the whole point here hahahahaha.
@bingsu02564 жыл бұрын
No, I think you missed the point. When it comes to lead playing, metal really doesn't have too much wiggle room. Metal has always been a very rhythmic genre, and though there's metal bands that have much more melodic and interesting rythmes, most of that comes from jazz/ blues playing (like animals as leaders or deftones). Metal can incorporate classical melodies, but in the end a lot, and i mean a lot of metal players tend to utilize the strategy of playing a lot of notes fast, with no real considerations of how each note should sound. you mention kerry's kings solos in slayer and idk if you've ever heard that guy solo but is any of what he plays soulful? does he choose interesting way to bend the note, or to create interesting harmonies? does he leave some air for the solo to breathe? no because he's kerry king. I'm not saying metal should have blues playing but you see the point here: metal lead playing is generally repetitive and usually lacks the feel or soul that blues/ jazz players incorporate. People can throw at me as many examples of the contrary such as Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, John Petrucci, etc but a lot of what they do that makes their metal playing melodic, groovy, or unique is from blues and jazz influences, heck Chris was a jazz fusion player before joining megadeth. Your right in that metal is rooted in blues, but only in a basic level. It utilizes the minor blues scale, with emphasis on the flat 5th, but that's about it. there's so much more to blues phrasing and improvisation that wasn't carried over into metal (but obv metal takes other melodic choices from different genres too). And metal doesn't have to stay soulful and feelsy like blues. metal is abrasive and heavy, for the most part at least, and it doesn't need to follow the same feels as blues. But as a guitarist metal gets boring, and at one point to ascend you would want to learn more genres, and concepts to grow, hence why the greatest metal players seem to be rooted in jazz, blues or classical music. correct me if I'm wrong but I think that was his point.
