Anytime I listen to Paul, I ask my 6 year old. "Oliver who is this?" Evertime he says "Paul Gilbert, I can recognize his guitar." Always makes me laugh.

Man I miss the old Paul Gilbert who didn't play this beginner repetitive 12 bar blues stuff. Listen to Racer X B.R.O - that's the true Gilbert. Brutal, aggressive alternative picking, string skipping, neoclassical mixed with pentatonic, metronome-like accuracy and timing, and technically complex monster licks. That last mini-solo in B.R.O is my absolute favorite from Gilbert. I don't even know what exactly he's doing there and there are no covers of it on youtube (possibly because it's too difficult for anyone to play). I hear a lot of pick articulation so it's definitely not pure legato. It's some mix of legato, alternate picking, sweeping, and string skipping. That 5 second lick encapsulates classic Gilbert. The terrifying guitar trip version.
