I joined SIU off the street. Already had my AB Unlimited. Went into the hall in Tacoma, filled out the application and joined. A month later I was on the "Noble Star" (Sealift, Inc). sailing between Japan and Korea. Good times. Thanks for the memories, SIU.

I first went to Piney Point in 1972. Continuous education there, I achieved my 3rd engineers license nine years later and joined MEBA D1. After thirty one year career, I retired Chief Engineer. No Regrets. Remember Mike and Joey Sacco very well. Good memories.

Went to that school around 1975, it was a quasi military training school that was around 3months long I think. They guaranteed you a job, their choice at the end of training. It was free, and they payed you 5 dollars a week with room and board and 3 square's a day. Every thing was as advertised. I graduated and was a card carrying SIU member A friend told me about the school. My first adventure away from home. Its probably changed big time since those times. I'll never forget the miniature and not so minature model's of every type of ship they had under glass. They were incredibly made by artisans. You would have to see to believe. I flunked Twitter school, sorry..............

@@DaltonReutlinger It's not that intense, but it is regimented like the military, and someone probably will yell at you if you don't follow what you are being told to do. You do wear a uniform, you do have to drill march every day, you will do KP duty, and you will be doing many things geared to safety and the industry. It's not as intense as the military but you are not there to goof around. I don't know you, so I don't know what you need to train for. Did you finish high school ?
@Dana-ie2bh2 жыл бұрын
@@DaltonReutlinger Each class usually has a trainee class Bosun and asst. Bosun, picked from within your class they are the ones who will be yelling at you, not usually any instructor. Who knows, you might get picked as a class Bosun or asst. and you'll be doing the yelling.
@Dana-ie2bh2 жыл бұрын
@@DaltonReutlinger To be honest I wouldn't recommend it to most people. It's a dying industry and most people can't hack it. The attrition rate is extremely high, and it is consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous and stressful jobs by insurance companies. Also, you are not eligible for workman's comp. if you get injured. I thought about it for a long time but what I tell young people. who don't usually listen, is to go get an AA degree, Junior colleges are tuition free nowadays, not free, but tuition free. Either find a subject that interests you or just get your AS degree in Math. Then go get a state or Federal job.

Mr. Guy is in charge of the student body and is one of the most hated persons in that school . Check with the Coast Guard also. There is a waiting period after completion of any sentence including parole before you may get a Merchant Mariner Card. The MMC is somewhat like a commercial drivers license for a truck driver. Also as said here....dont lie the Coast Guard does check.
