During our sellout event in New Orleans, we asked Paul He-man about inducting Goldberg into the Hall of Fame and why his run with Brock in late 2016-early 2017 was so successful. Heyman discusses why Goldberg was the man to squash The Beast and why it worked!

@@Hajun554 It didn't need to be technical or a long match, but it had to be a match. Bill Goldberg isn't able to have a decent match even if you handed him a full packet of unused matches. The guy while looking like a visual bad ass was the embodiment of a guy who to be honest should never have gotten the push he initially got. Yes he has the size, yes he has the look, but as a performer he put more people on the shelves than any other wrestler in the past 30 years. And I'm not even talking about Bret. Go through his history during that time. Scott Steiner with a broken Orbital bone during a simple breakup, Renee Dupree being put on the shelf less than 10 seconds into his match with Goldberg, Christ how many times has Goldberg himself has given himself a concussion before he even left his own locker room. In short, F Bill Goldberg, he was a plague in the business that should never have been brought into it. All the potential in the world only to give the middle finger to actually learning how to wrestle.

I wouldn't doubt that Vince is jealous of Heyman. They say that the fastest way to ensure something _wouldn't_ happen in WWE was to get Heyman to present it to Vince as his idea. ECW never had anything like the resources to be any genuine threat to WWF or WCW (actually, it had a sort of working talent exchange relationship with WWF) but the Monday Night War is still remembered as a 3-way conflict just because of Heyman's booking talent and you can see why that would rankle with Vince.

Heyman mentions 911 back in ECW's hey-days (pun intended). For those of you who don't know what it was like, here's the feeling. I remember having to wait till 3 AM in front of TV to watch ECW. I literally had to count every minute down. There was no distraction at that time of night other than to play games on my SEGA Genesis. I would surf through late night shows, music videos and MTV's Beavis & Butthead to keep me entertained. There was no playing around with a smartphone, no social media because they hadn't come out with that technology yet. Only around 98-99 I had access to Virtual Places Chat (Yea, before Myspace and all of that...) ECW would usually jump off with Taz doing a semi-kayfabe, semi-shoot promo cussing the hell out of Vince McMahon and WWE (then known as WWF). Either that or there would be an on-going match with a crazy end-twist that would keep you tuned in. Insane music, cheap graphics, any feeling of sleep would instantly go away. It was extreme time. A suited Joey Styles would handle color commentary by himself. No budget for fancy spotlights and fireworks wasted on useless talent; no overly "hot" valets or female wrestlers to distract from the wrestling itself. There were a few above-average looking chicks as valets. The type of girls you'd meet at a bar. Made it look real. The crazy "smarks" of the ECW arena were always up on their wrestling; the hype crowd handing out weapons to the wrestlers during matches. Always a thrill seeing 911 chokeslam some dude through 4 tables or the Gangstas come out to "Natural Born Killaz" with New Jack rocking his 2Pac shirt and bandana only to leave both opponents and themselves bloodied... The Eliminators were arguably the greatest tag-team ever but they get no credit, maybe because John Kronus died (of an overdose?) and Perry... (I don't know, he's off to Saturn maybe?) Not to mention Sabu. How he would singlehandedly change the mechanics to these wrestling matches with innovative use of tables and chairs and high-flying daredevil maneuvers that made him a draw. When Rob Van Dam came later in the game, it made Shawn Michaels look like he could learn a move or two. Speaking of which, I'd wake up next morning to WWE's lame Face VS Heel formula featuring characters like Duke the Dumpster Drowse, Doink The Clown and the Godwinnz (to name a few... Thank God they had Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker and Razor Ramon back then). Enough said. This is my longest post ever but at least some of you now have an idea what it was like. Sorry I didn't mean to sound like those bitter old dudes talking about the "good ole days" but to be honest, the 90's were the best times all-around when you look at music, sports and even social life.

As someone born about a year before the Invasion its safe to say i never got to experience WCW or ECW to their fullest extent,so comments like this rlly help me understand the perspective. I have a few questions if you don't mind: 1.How old were you during the time u watched ECW? 2.Did the violence make sense storyline wise? 3.Was the crowd as hot as One Night Stand 2006 on every show? And lastly: 4.Having now acces to promotions like NJPW, AEW, TNA etc. do you think any less of the ECW "garbage style" of wrestling?
@lioicxc6827
@lioicxc6827 4 жыл бұрын
@@PuertoDaDon I was in my late teens. The storylines didn't always justify the display of that much violence but the rebellious hardcore attitude of the times confirmed by the art movements of the times (Grunge music, heavy metal, gangsta rap, extreme sports) made fans give the thumbs up to more and more violence. The mid 90's were almost a contrast to say the 70's peace movements of the hippies. We weren't as sensitive to everything as we are today.... Yes. The crowds were always as hot as that PPV and the Philly arena was crazy. Some knew about NJPW through Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazines, we were smart marks. Fans today have been spoiled and over saturated with so much wrestling accessibility (Internet and on broadcast). Back then we had to wait to see it which made the product seem more gratifying... We knew wresting could be presented in various ways since we were exposed to Lucha Libre with the luchadors on Spanish TV and those with cable TV would catch some independent wrestling events here and there. Fans subconsciously were aware that ECW offered a well balanced mixture of Japan style, Lucha and American wrestling so looking back the product was and still is good even when in comparison to AEW or TNA etc because it wasn't so much about the image quality, decor and fireworks. It was the fact that it was so shitty in production, that we got to see the more realistic personalities of the wrestlers that we only knew as cartoon characters in WWE, that the wrestlers were free to express their talent, and that we didn't feel like our intelligence was being insulted, that the storylines were so much more reflective of our reality, and that it was everything the system (WWE) wasn't.

@@lioicxc6827 Wow,thank you so much for the quick response.I also belive that wrestling has become such a fenomenon that(altough good for profits and ratings and introducing wrestling to new audiences)the "wow" factor of it is gone.Fans are not as invested and angles such as Dustin Rhodes blading being considered "Risky" is just stupid considering we are talking about a sport focused on big men trying to (sometimes) kill each other. I can see how passionate you are about ECW and the fact that many others are just as passionate as you means that it rlly was that good.Paul Heyman is in my opinion the best mic worker on the planet,maybe of all time(also a creative genius who actually understands wrestling) and i rlly hope he finds a way to get involved more either in WWE writing or anywhere else. the thing about believability is something that lays in the hand of the management: i would like to see more midcarders get a chance against the huge stars (lesnar, strowman, undertaker, etc.) and give them a good fight. don't let them win but let them kick out of something you might not expect and make it last longer than a squash. in other words: make your up-and-coming guys look good and boost the credibillity of your whole roster. cena's open challenge was a good first step but we need more of that. every single man in the roster (except the joke characters) should have a certain level of credibility. nowadays only guys in the title scene have that and the rest of the roster are miles behind. fans are led to believe their mom could beat heath slater in a match. and at the same time, there is noone in wwe who can beat lesnar or reigns. there has to be more in between the 2 extremes.

@ivenstorm 6 жыл бұрын
it gave talking points for the wrong reasons. You had Goldberg, a guy who hadn't wrestled a single match since 15 years prior, beating a guy like Brock Lesnar who was arguably the most dominant guy in the business today short of Minoru Suzuki from New Japan. It would be a different story if Goldberg had been wrestling up until 2 years prior and he came back and dominated Brock. He chose to be a family man and do whatever he has been doing for the past 15 years, and that's fine. No problem with that. But there are so many other performers that could have challenged Brock and beat him, even in a 90 second match.
@wadud92
@wadud92 6 жыл бұрын
Negative Ives There is NO such thing as a talking point as the "wrong" reason in wrestling. You seem to forget what the product we love does. Also, a returning Goldberg after 2 years dominating is not a shock. 15 years retired swashing the most dominant guy in (western) wrestling since, well himself. Now that is the shock of the century.
@ivenstorm
@ivenstorm 6 жыл бұрын
I still think its a dumb booking decision. I can see how people would have liked it, but for me, it killed all hype for Brock instantly. It was even worse when they gave Bill the championship, and had him beat much more talented guys with ease. I always hated Goldberg, and always will.
@ArcaneAzmadi
@ArcaneAzmadi 6 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with you about Goldberg's win being a great shock talking point, but I would contest your statement that "There is NO such thing as a talking point as the "wrong" reason in wrestling." Best example of something being talked about for the "wrong" reason? Chris Benoit.

"15 years retired swashing the most dominant guy in (western) wrestling since, well himself. Now that is the shock of the century." No, that is burying the entire working, active and *not* retired WWE roster that couldn't lay a finger on Lesnar since at least 2013 by having old retired grampa show how easy it is to take Lesnar down and how everybody else on the roster sucks.

@ivenstorm
@ivenstorm 6 жыл бұрын
You seem to forget that Goldberg was booked as a monster, whereas Brock actually is a monster. So while Brock might not have been booked like Goldberg, he is a much more credible wrestler and fighter than Goldberg. To be fair, Goldberg was booked to be unbeatable in 2 minute stomp fests. That was his gimmick. Whereas Samoa Joe, for example, also remained undefeated for a long period of time and was actually able to pull off amazing matches regardless of who he faced. Bottom line, imo, Goldberg should have lost a long time before he actually lost, and Joe shouldn't have lost to Angle, he should have lost to Styles or Daniels, or even to an upset victory against Jay Lethal.

The beauty of the Goldberg/Brock feud and their matches is that it was booked to the same philosophy that Heyman booked ECW, play to the strengths of your talents and hide their drawbacks. Goldberg's box office was in this hard hitting, no nonsense squashes and that's precisely what their matches were, nothing but big money moves and spots, no downtime. You put Lesnar and Goldberg in a lengthy competitive match you get, well, Mania 20.

Why haven't I seen this clip before, I love the way he describes. If you go back and watch Heyman's initial promos when he initially hinted at Goldberg's return, it was just awesome. In a way, he basically set Goldberg up as the the mythical force that everyone always had in the back of their mind. In a way, I'd say that the legendary "aging gunslinger" was the 'final boss'. A guy Brock could not intimidate, look down on, and would not fold. Like the true challenge Brock would have to test himself with, on his own terms. Thae fact that Brock and Goldberg are good friends, helped them work immensely well. I also wonder if Deon "Primetime" Sanders, watched the match, since he and Goldberg have been good friends since they played together in the NFL.

@Steven Willett I respectfully disagree and I'll tell you why. There have been guys in the business who are capable from both a story perspective and a wrestling perspective that easily outshine Bill Goldberg. Bill Goldberg was the product of right time, right place and nothing more. In another environment he wouldn't have gotten the push that he did. If you had Bill Goldberg go up through the ranks of the independents prior to his major run with WCW, I have my serious doubts that he would have gotten the infamy that he did. During his tenure in WCW there were opportunities for other more talented performers to easily give him his first loss. William Regal and DDP both come to mind immediately. Outside of WCW, you had the Samoan Badass Samoa Joe. A guy whose undefeated streak was based on having proper matches, proper 15-20 minute matches with recognizable people making them look like a million bucks rather than bulldozing through them. Mind you he came in to the game 10 years after Bill Goldberg, but the point still stands. And then you get guys like Meng/Haku who realistically make Bill Goldberg look like a child playing with toys. Haku if he was ever pushed the way he should have been pushed, would have been the guy to beat in WCW. But he was a soft spoken, kind hearted soul so it wasn't viable for him to take on that role. There are dozens of performers capable of taking down Lesnar legitimately in a wrestling environment(not MMA). Goldberg was booked based on his previous WCW run and nothing else. Having him at 51 years old take down a guy who is 11 years younger, in less than 30 seconds? That wasn't a smart booking decision.

Lesnar had trouble with strength, Goldberg. Lesnar had trouble with technical finesse, AJ styles. Lesnar is weak at speed, Finn balor. so overall the story can be Lesnar is slowing down. All he needs is a combo of strength, technical prowess, and speed. And you have someone believable that can beat Brock Lesnar. Charlotte Flair is a female version of exactly that. Man. A young ruthless aggression John Cena would have been a good candidate, Brett Hart would have been a perfect candidate.

I'm gonna say it, Brock as a WWE wrestler/superstar whatever you wanna call it, is overrated. A legit fighter, yes...but he's not worthy of the runs he's been given, the no doubt stupid money he's earning. Think of all his good matches and he NEEDS someone to make him look good. Look at WM against Reigns last week, essentially a drawn out match where he had 95% of the match time to do whatever he wanted with a rag doll and it was boring. Anytime he gets an opponent who he can do anything with and is guaranteed a win, it's the same suplex city bitch, throw em around a bit, bash off some barriers or steps and F5.
