As a Horn player, I'm completely embarrassed not to know this work. I'm very well acquainted with the Horn Sonata (which I played on a recital) and Concerto. Though I've never played it I'm pretty well acquainted with the Alto Horn Sonata as well. I just can't believe I never knew anything about this work. However, I'm thrilled that I "discovered" this video and to know this wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing.

So much clarity of rhythm, rhythm, rhythm. So missing in so many recordings of Hindemith's works. Every note, every rhythm, every thing... MATTERS in Hindemith's works. Please, always preserve rhythmic sense! You guys?/gals? did JUST THAT. It makes SENSE.

Hi, George. I just subscribed, because a composer who revels in this music is a composer I need to pay attention to. Hindemith is unique - and brilliant in that. I composed a trombone quartet - Alto, 2 tenors, bass - as an homage to this very Sonate. Unfortunately, I have yet to have it performed/recorded by a trombone quartet who has the time/patience/ability? to play it in tune and 'correctly'. Frustrating, for sure. It just takes some time and patience to find the dissonance/consonance relationships, so trombones should be able to perform music of this sensibility PERFECTLY. After all, there are NO 'open strings' whose tunings cannot be altered on the fly to match the function of the tone in the stack... French horns are perfect, too - because there is that lovely hand in the bell which makes all intonation adjustments possible. These days I am arranging this very Hindemith Sonate - for Trumpet quartet. I will have to record certain passages in the 4th trumpet part up an octave (maybe have to play them at an appropriately adjusted tempo), then digitally adjust those passages down an octave, because - let's face it - trumpet doesn't really have some of the notes you wish they did! Still, it will be fun recording it and will be fun to listen to - as a brighter, trumpet-ish version! I played French horn for decades. I was playing horn in the Houston Symphony by age 22. Lots of fantastic experiences in my blessed musical life, as a hornist, pianist, guitarist, bassist, vocalist, thereminist - and now as a trumpete!!! 🙂 I wish you the very best, sir. Is that the Houston Area Horn Quartet performing in Houston at the Tower Theater in the 1980's??? Sounds great. Could be them.

Hmm... maybe not. I think we took more time in certain places, otherwise just about the very same badassness. Yeah, get it!!!!
