"Paul in Athens" Really?

Taking a closer look at those famous "missions to the Gentiles".
Did the wandering apostle of the new revelation really make a flying visit to the home of Greek rationalism and tell the philosophers where they were going wrong? Or is Paul's Athenian interlude just another fabrication?

Many parts of the book of acts seem like blatant forgeries, yet when Paul is brought on trial , it seems as though no one knows anything about the person of Jesus on earth , which makes me wonder if Luke was using older, celestial Jesus sources which he bastardized.

when an intelligent mind asks a question of the ignorant faithful, their only answer is "you must take it on faith." Yet, god himself, says he is not the author of confusion. So when reality conflicts with what is said in the bible, god is merely trying to tell us that the bible is poppycock.

I am one of those "ignorant faithfuls" as you label those of us strongly believe in God and his Word. However, I strongly make the following point. My faith is NOT based on unsubstantiated faith without verifiable evidence. I do not believe in myths and fables. Matter-of-fact, I will begin teaching a bible class on apologetics in September. But...I do want to acknowledge that many young people have lost their faith in the truthfulness of God's word and in God himself because many religious teachers used the excuse "it's what the scriptures or the bible says" and never researched the answer to the child's question. The teacher didn't know what or how to answer the question. Shame on any teacher who doesn't study the evidence and prepares himself/herself to answer any and all questions a student ask. Personally, I'm looking forward to any and all questions, difficult and easy, any of my 4th-8th graders ask me. I want them prepared and confident to defend God

I don't think ancient people were dumb. I think they did the best with what they knew, attempting to do multiple tasks in a complex, chaotic world. So, although it's easy to label a deity as only in our mind, I think it's sometimes used more specifically as a metaphor for what we would label the unconscious or subconscious. Creating rituals for that internal discussion is similar to hypnotic inductions, and can have a similar effects. These are times before there was any understanding of living beings, or how to treat the wide range of maladies humans have to endure. So, making the most of our internal resources to solve medical issues was profoundly important. How, without a modern understanding of the world, do you describe things in a way that that ordinary people can action, and use to help themselves? Similarly, trying to enforce a social organization, where "might is right" is easy to understand but disadvantageous in larger groups. So, by inventing the ultimate might, who happens to be the ultimate right and enforcer of justice (even after you die), even the most powerful people within a group could be convinced to follow social laws.

So, you don't understand english? I said - a reference to a god can be a metaphor for personal unconscious. I god can be a imaginative figure to inspire conformity towards socially beneficial behavior. I did *not* say there is anything like a real deity, nor that deities exist external to a human mind. Short enough for you? PS: As a rule of thumb don't let your assumptions get ahead your knowledge. My user name - is Sigma (the Greek letter) Tao (with o replaced with 0), Tao being - "the way". It is a reference to a childhood creation, which spanned all the Greek letters of their alphabet, and was personal science fiction I wrote. There is nothing religious about it.

@A D. I hear you loud and clear! I was about 20 as well when I woke up. Raised very religious, religious schools, studying bible and dogma back then. However, please don't see it as a waste. If you have detailed knowledge of those things it gives you experience, strength and some authority when arguing with the delusionals. It's my tactic where I use the bible ITSELF to convince them they are wrong. There's plenty ugliness, torture, vile, pedophilia, incest, child-murder and mass murder by this non-existent god in both OT & NT of theirs to turn many good-hearted people away from it. I admit I'm very aggressive about it, but it has yielded good results. My girlfriend too, and her sister-in-law, went through the "submission" and "subservient" lectures before Christian marriages take place. They were disgusted by it. So was I! You're not alone. I could go on & on, but it would be way too long for a comment room here. Consider books by Annie Lauri Gaylor, "Woe to the Women: The Bible Tells Me So" and "Women Without Superstition: No Gods - No Masters". And consider joining FFRF.org. Also, check out vids at "Caesar's Messiah" YT channel for more recent content & discoveries about bible stuff, similar to JesusNeverExistd. Regards.

So if you know so much how about answering a couple of the questions posed by Ken? 1 - How does the writer of Acts (Whoever that was) know any of the material that he reports in this Athenian episode? Acts and Thessalonians both say Paul was alone in Athens, bible verses noted @ 2:15 in the video. 2 - How does the writer know what the Athenian philosophers said to each other? Bible verse noted at 2:26 in the video. If there's any "BS" going on it seems to be about 2,000 years old.

I would disagree. Paul, and his pseudo-judaism, is what the authors of those early pauline writings used to incite the rebellion of 64AD. The concoction continued in order to fill in the gaps and mistakes (especially the pauline letters) When people demanded to "see" this messiah, the gospels were concocted. Paul himself was most assuredly a fictitious character or an amalgamation of many.

I Can't help but notice that this man left out some important scripture. in the verse acts 17:15 the actual reference fully says: "So those who CONDUCTED him to Athens; receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed." Now you probably see that as the people in the boat departed to go back to Silas and Timothy, but the departing is from Paul with his entourage ( because he would have had to of had someone with him ) and those in the boat. The author of the book of Acts, Luke, would of been in the boat with Paul bringing him to places. Paul would then have his entourage there to back up what he was saying to Luke. He also says in this video that paul is the author of Acts but in reality, the man who wrote acts is named Luke. So I find that this is not a reliable source of knowledge because he fails to find out information about the bible. instead he finds information that better suits his argument and only uses the bible when it can help him. So if you people watch and believe this, then it is not true fact what he is saying in accordance to the bible.

This is a misunderstanding (and lack of clarity on JNE's part) when he says Paul, OR RATHER the author of acts he means 2 different people. If he had said "...Paul, or rather the author of acts, so-called Luke..." as he has said before there would not have been this misunderstanding. I know the traditional authors of the biblical books, there is no way that Ken doesn't know them.

Acts is ENTIRELY fiction. The true history of Christianity (the Chrestians worshiping Serapis slowly and gradually converted to Paulism over the 50-60 years following the destruction of Jerusalem) was just too embarrassing. They needed a nice story like a group of apostles receiving instruction straight from God and this hero Paul going around showing people the truth; as well as a lie about the origin of the name Christians. All it shows us is the imagination of late 1st century/early 2nd century christians.

@philojudaeusofalexandria9556

sigmata0 It's only my speculation based on the Tacitus reference (falsified Neronian persecution), the Pliny Letter, and the Emperor Adrian Letter ("The worshipers of Serapis are called Christians, and those who are devoted to the god Serapis call themselves Bishops of Christ. There is not a high priest among the Jews, a Samaritan, or a priest of Chrestus who is not a liar, astrologer, soothsayer, or quack.") There is a lot of speculation about the true origins of Christianity if (as mythicists believe) it did not start with an itinerant, crucified messiah-figure. My personal belief is that it is syncretism between various mystery cults and Philo of Alexandria's thinking [merging Platonic ideas with Judaism]. Others suggest the gospels are wholly astrological allegory (i.e. Pilate was originally Pilatus the spear in the sky, and only later historicized and associated with Pontius Pilate; which is why 'Jesus' was awkwardly placed in history where he was). My personal favorite to read (if you haven't already) is Arthur Drews "The Witnesses to the Historicity of Jesus"; available here (archive.org/details/witnessestohisto00drewiala) All we are left with is speculation (until further game-changing archaelogical discovery) because, as Drews notes: "How much has survived of the attacks on Christianity by its opponents? Has not the Church from the very first been careful to suppress or destroy anything that might endanger its interests? Did it not publicly burn the anti-christian writings of Porphyry? Was not the entire great library of Alexandria (it took 1400 years for Christendom to assemble a comparable library) sacrificed to the zeal of fanatical Christians in 391, and were not the greatest intellectual treasures of antiquity lost with it? Who can say what powerful truths against Christianity perished with it? Even the work of Celsus, the one attack on Christianity we have some parts of, is known to us only through Origen’s reply to it. What portions not quoted frightened Christians so much as to suppress it? " Similarly, from Carrier (Why we have reason to doubt) "A clue to this strange silence [of extra-biblical references to Christianity/Christians/Jesus] lies in the treatment of the few critical writings about Christians we do know about: every single one of them was destroyed. The only reason we know anything about them is that in each case Christian authors either refer to them or wrote a rebuttal (and later Christians liked those rebuttals so well that they kept them). But these critiques cannot possibly have been the only ones written, and are unlikely to have been the earliest ones written. And in any event, they were not preserved; they were replaced instead with Christian propaganda. These [critiques referenced] are just the ones we know about. Which would be a fraction of what there was. All of it was tossed out or destroyed. Several texts that were preserved have sections removed. Sections whose disappearance seems convenient for Christians. Now, a lot of ancient literature, indeed arguably most, has missing material. This is typically a result of carelessness and accident, multiplied by time. But in some cases the precision and location of what was lost is a bit more peculiar than chance accident would suggest. Instead, we get to read only what medieval Christians wanted us to read. For example, the Christian scholar Hippolytus in the early third century wrote his Refutation of All Heresies in ten volumes. At the end of the first of them he says he will next explain the secret doctrines of the several mystery religions (which would have included the Passion Narratives of the different savior gods, including miraculous births, deaths and resurrections, and their sacred meals and baptisms). But the second and third volumes are missing. The text skips directly to volume 4, which begins his discourse on astrology. This does not look like an accident. Some Christian or Christians decided to destroy those two volumes-for some reason fearing their contents. The resulting loss in our knowledge of the mystery religions is beyond considerable. "

***** It fascinates me because around 2B humans still believe this bullshit. And for about 1500 years it wasn't even questioned (of course, getting burned at the stake if you question it was probably part of it). People say it's amazing how Germany, an advanced and modern society, was convinced to support Hitler but to me it's far more amazing how a colossal fraud like Christianity survived for 1900+ years. It says so much about human psychology and the inability for people to think sensibly. Perhaps even more amazing is that after scholars wrote dozens of books destroying Christianity in the 19th and early 20th century, Christians still exist! "Why do so many remain believers despite the scholarly discovery in our time [1800’s] proving that nearly all the scriptures are lies and forgeries? Most of such people never doubt and never inquire. Changes of opinion are the result of causes that seldom affect the intellectually lazy. With them it is not a question of mental honesty, but a case of inactivity of mind, which results in a deep slumber, that only ignorance induces. So long as persons are contented to "shut their eyes and open their mouths," or while they are too idle to use their faculties in thinking for themselves, they will probably remain Christians... Furthermore it is impossible to argue profitably with people who do not use their mental faculties, and hence the greatest delusions that take possession of the human mind often remain unchecked and irremovable. On the other hand, when the intellect is brought into play, the result is the growth of new ideas. The attempts made by any of the clergy to explain away the objectionable features of certain doctrines are prompted only by their desire to retain their position in a church, which is their only means of obtaining the necessaries of life." And there weren't very many judahites left after Titus was done there. Don't forget also that the gospel was to go out only for 40 years. And then the end would come: end of the temple age: AD66-70. Paul and the apostles, their mission, was to gather in the elect of the 12 tribes of Israel, who were scattered about in the known world at the time. But all this is only if you believe that the bible is 100% accurate; the prophecies and promises. The Israel Only perspective is the only point of view that makes any sense out of the bible. The bible was only written for the 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus only came to redeem Israel. The whole book has nothing to do with any other nation but ISRAEL: the 12 tribes who if we believe Romans 11, Matthew 24 and Revelation---among other verses---Jesus' second coming was in AD70. So basically from an IO perspective the bible is an open and shut case. Thoughts?

Anyone who is sincere and a keen observer of life will see the bible seeks to make no pretentious claims....it is a dismal apology for Judaism as many say it is....if the biblical authors can be accused of anything unsettling is Sincerely Idealistic at best and woefully innocent at worst.

"No church founded in Athens. There was Hierotheos the Thesmothete and Dionysos, founded the church after St Paul's teaching in 53 BC. That's an error. How do we know what the philosophers said? Well, the above two were members of the Areopagos. As for 'Agora', it just means market place and could be right where the other temples were. Luke did not write a travelogue of Athens, (however he got his info) but of Paul. Jewish synagogues are widely known in the 1st C throughout the Roman empire. It could have been in a house. Paul would go there. Natural. You can find references to a temple to the Unknown God in Athens in Apollodorus, Philostratus and Pausanians. After that, I fear the maker of the video gets lost in imaginations. But do answer my points, will you?

How debates work in the Bible: a man walks into a place of worship to talk about ideas counter to what the believers there think. The much "feared" naysayers challenge him by saying some version of 'what could this idiot have to say?' Our hero then goes on a 20 minute rant completely uninterrupted by the hostile interlocutors. Afterwards half the audience is blown away by Sunday school basics with no evidence to back it up, and completely abandon their worldviews that they grew up with that tie their families and communities together and become his followers. The other half sneer and and make threats and retire in shame to plot his demise, but have no comebacks at all. All skeptics are either tongue tied, or we get an editorial insert that alerts the audience that they are evil and that's why they are rejecting the truth! How these things work in real life: A foreigner with some foreign or unorthodox ideas walks into a church, temple, tabernacle, mosque, etc. As soon as everyone in there finds out he's not one of them and wants to proselytize his ideas over theirs, they ask him to leave. So he goes to some forum where he can at least talk and when he debates he's constantly interrupted. He goes in with confidence that he's going to blow everyone's minds but most of the people are unimpressed and have a lot of questions that he didn't consider beforehand. He goes away thinking he won while his interlocutors leave thinking they won. He eventually raises his children to believe as he does and his followers eventually learn that raising believers works better than trying to convert adults.

"Only after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans did the new creed come into prominence. Then a patriotic Jew named Paul or Saul conceived the idea of humbling the Roman power by destroying the morale of its soldiery with the doctrines of love and non-resistance preached by the little sect of Jewish Christians. He became the Apostle to the Gentiles, he who hitherto had been one of the most active persecutors of the band. And so well did Paul do his work that within four centuries the great empire which had subjugated Palestine, along with half of the world, was a heap of ruins. And the law which went forth from Zion became the official religion of Rome... ...Without their religion, the Jewish race, too, would soon have fallen apart and disappeared, as we have shown in many other parts of this book. What saved them was the zeal and dedication of Saul of Tarsus (the Christians’ St. Paul) in spreading a poisonous new creed among the Gentiles, a creed originating amongst a small Jewish sect (the Essenes) and not attracting any particular attention, especially not the mainstream of the Jews. In fact, Saul, recognizing its suicidal nature, at first persecuted this sect, since he did not want the Jews to become infected with it. Then he got the brilliant idea of feeding it to the Romans . . . This was the most fatal and significant turning point in the history of the White Race and of mankind as a whole. www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?noframes;read=9298

It is all Greek to me! The very first alleged copy of the Old Testament was allegedly traslated from Greek dating back to Ptolmy III. If it was in Hebrew then why did the church not adopt the Hebrew laguage and if Jesus was Jewish it would have be pious for the church to talk in Hebrew from the begining. But he never spoke Hebrew, it was Aramaic which later developed into Arabic. (and Pope Frances insisted on that lately). Hebrew did not exist then, see the Dead Sea Scrolls in Qumran dating as earely as the 1st century, yet it not Hebrew. He was not Jewish but more alined to Abrahamic religion see John 8:58. Refering to Abraham curiously, not Moses nor Noah. The Talmodic scripts deny him being Jewish. The new Testament was all in Greek and they conflated the man with the myth in an era that believed in human gods. I believe every thing you say Ken, but I think you should consider looking into the Eastern side of the story. You never know may be the historisity of the man did exist.

.. the Hebrew language was almost a dead language, at about 400BC, according to Nehemiah 13:23. 'In those days saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: And their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews language, but according to the language of each people.' .. Nehemiah wrote about 400BC, so it is probable few Jews spoke or understood Hebrew at the supposed time of Jesus, and that even Paul of Tarsus did not speak or understand Hebrew...
@samuelj8592
@samuelj8592 7 жыл бұрын
+gary wersley ".. the Hebrew language was almost a dead language, at about 400BC..." You are insinuating that it was alive before that time despite the lack of any evidence to that effect. Why not look at Deuteronomy 26:5 talking about Abraham "A wandering Aramean was my father" it is a concession from the OT that Abraham was Aramean, therefore, spoke Aramaic. Aramean is the translation and the actual word in the Hebrew bible (Arami). Saying Hebrew is an ancient language is a myth. Repeating it does not make it true. The Hebrew Alphabet that we know it today is as recent as 9th century AD, probably developed as a code for their secret writings. Even Maimonides in the 12th Century despite the fact that he used the Hebrew Alphabet but the language was literal Arabic, which supports the theory that he wrote it code and considering he had a prominent position at the time of the Abbasid dynasty. Modern Hebrew is as recent as 19th century, which includes Yiddish and Latin words in it. Aramaic is closest to Arabic. Some linguistic scholars even regard it as a variation dialect to Arabic. Even the use of the term Semitic language is as recent as 18th century. Biblical scholars invented the notion that the spread of the Arabic language came with the spread of Islam, despite the fact that there are evidence pior to it. Yet so many non-Arab Muslim countries like Malaysia, Afghanistan, (Pakistan formerly part of India), Bangladesh, Djibouti (just to name a few) reverted to their original languages despite the fact that they are predominantly Muslims to this day. While Iraq, Syria, Egypt the home of some of the greatest empires of old still speak Arabic in defferent diaects, ever wondered about that? which is oldest or which is the mother language might be debatable, but Hebrew most certainly not it.

So if it is true that Paul wanted to destroy Greek rationalism then what is your point? Do you even have an actual point or do you argue from an antitheist position and accuse Paul of being a boogeyman who preached faith? And oh yes, bad Paul who wanted to "destroy" various philosophical approaches to life where none pointed to a personal God or enlightened a human being on who saves from sin and that such a thing is possible. This video seems to be a pitiful try at demonizing apostle Paul, whose message was not only philosophically ahead of all the various philosophies and unlike them, his message had a living element contained in it, the two way communication between God and man, the renewed life, the life with eyes opened wide and with ears to hear. So may I ask, why do you have something against a way in which a personal and loving God is preached which offers salvation from sin when if a goal of philosophy back then was to instill virtue and spiritual growth in a man? Paul's Gospel was in fact the most philosophically rich thing concerning man's freedom from vices and lusts of the flesh and it's much more than just one's personal liberation from the aforementioned.

some person Well, let’s see. This god of yours sets up his creation for failure by placing something deadly in the garden and tells them do not touch. Then places an evil tempter in there as well to make it even harder. Would you place a loaded gun or a jar of poison in your children’s playpen and tell them not to touch it? Would you also place an evil being in there as well to tempt them? Now keep in mind you’re an all knowing god and you can see the future. You know what they will do. Is that the kind of parent you aspire to be? Now it’s not just death for them but for every human being that is born. Then it doesn’t end there because the ultimate consequence is eternal damnation to burn in the fires of hell forever and ever in eternal unimaginable torment. This so called free choice is love Jesus or burn in hell. That’s the doings of a dictator who has no mercy. Would you want to be presented with a potential spouse and then be told love this person or be cast into a fire lit forever? Is that your idea of free will and love? Now do you have any more questions you fucking moron?
@someperson2789
@someperson2789 4 жыл бұрын
@Stefan Urban A God of wisdom and love will do that, because like cattle men may need to be pricked with a sharp stick to get moving into the field and plow, so to is it profitable for a man who's well accustomed with his carnal nature, or in other words the lowly animalistic side of him to get put on a sickbed by God and hear God speaking to him through his hard trial which is his illness. Is this perhaps not ideal and absurd? If you think so man's fallen state where our carnal nature is natural is what's not ideal, but the voice of the conscience is also natural if you were to tell me people who are sick and believe that God is waking them up through their sickness are superstitious, because affirming or denying the conscience are both assertive positions a person can pick for themselves. Because deity by definition cannot be love and not jealous, God is willing to throw some on a sick bed in order that they may turn and repent because even if they were to live healthy they will still one day die, perhaps unexpectedly and would end up in hell, perhaps had they not been chastised in the sickness they had.
