I bought a 1969 GTO Judge in 1971. Beautiful car. I took my wife on our first date to the Oregon Coast in it. We are still married. Jay took my son and I on a tour of his shop. Jay is exactly the person he portrays on his videos. Kind,generous of his time and a true gentleman.

Good review. I remember when Paul bought it, but hadn't followed the restoration as we don't get to see each other that often. When Dad got the '67 I remember him saying "442" stood for "400 CI, 4 Barrel, and 2 Exhaust", but I also heard the reference to "4 Barrel, 4-Speed, and 2 Exhaust" which made more sense as I recall the 442 being the only Olds with a 4-speed. As for the mileage, it comes with the territory. As I remember, the '67 only got about 12 MPG with a stock Olds 400 and 3-speed Automatic. Matt Jackson (Paul's older Brother)

It was a Oldsmobile 400 Rocket with 2 Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetors. There were a few 442s that had the Old's 455 Rocket with 2 Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetors.

I hade bought a 1969 olds 442 convertible in 1977. It was my first car I actually paid for with my mom as a co-signer for $1.700.00. I was a junior in High School. It had the big block 400 with the 400 transmission duel exhaust. Electric windows, electric bench seat, top and even a electric radio antenna Air loaded. My Dad was a parts manager for GMC in the late 60s, I was the youngest of four kids so my father would trade for vista cruser station wagon every other year until he finally bought a 1975 98 Royal with the 455 brand new that he had for as long as he could drive. We where a Oldsmobile family so the 442 was my dream car. I had lost my job when I was 20 and the car needed electrical work and a new top,the weather in Kansas City was not kind to a convertible, so I sold it for $500.00 and watch this person burn rubber all the way down the street laughing as he left. One of the worst days of my life. It was nice to watch one run again on your video. Thanks Jay. Bobby Hawkins

I took my first road test in my friend's'69 Cutlass with the 330 High Compression Motor and a high stall torque converter, it chirped the tires every time it shifted. He failed me by 1-Point!!

@@robinreiley1828 - My father, and then my older brother, had a stock Cutlass. I don't remember the year or what size engine it had. It wasn't a 442 but it did have the same blue color paint as the one in this this video. One thing interesting about the body design was how rounded it was. That sticks in my mind and I've tried to find out about it but all the Cutlasses I see online are all 442's. You wouldn't happen to know anything about it would you? (Sorry about the sketchy information)

Hey Jay, my wife and I saw you at Tommy T's in San Leandro (SF Bay Area) in the early '80's, and we'd never laughed so hard at clean material. It was a real tour de force; unforgettable, and we were always sure you'd make it. I've been a car guy since my single digit years and owned three before I had a license. Marin County was cow and chicken country back then. I have to say you're living a fantasy I've had since I saw Bill Harrah's collection as a kid. You far outdone him, and you're educating new generations. God bless you and yours!

No issues with his choice to drop in a Chevy big block. Sounds like there might have been some drama in getting the original motor rebuilt? Personally though I feel the stock engine had more than enough torque and HP, especially when running stock rubber.

@@mikecalabrese28 There is no problem of rebuilding an Olds V8 and they are still available as cores. I myself have about 8 cores cheaply. It is just a cheap way of putting a crate motor an made a great car just a fake.

When I was working for a GM dealer here in New Brunswick, Canada back in 1973, just as the emissions stuff was coming out, I had just come back from the regional training center, a customer can in with a 72 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible with the 455 with a 4-barrel. carb, he was getting about 5 mpg, so I did the factory tune up, the service manager thought I was blowing up the car when I put the carb cleaner through it.. The owner picked it up on a Friday and showed up again on Monday, He was very happy to be getting 8 mpg. You would even take it out of the garage today. Really nice video, takes me back.

That is a very fine looking 69 442 Mr. Jackson. I had a chance to get a 66 Impala 2Dr. Hardtop with a similar blue and Black top ( No SS so bench seat and column shift ) 283 with a powerglide, and your Olds reminds me of the deal I missed. ( I would never get it close to being as nice as your 442 but it had that Lighter blue shade of metallic blue ). I recently sold my 1 and only build, a 1955 210 Delray Club coupe that I cherished for nearly 30 years. That Blue has me looking for a Impala Hardtop, 4 door or 2, they are all fine . I know Jay was "juicing " you on the dust here and there but hey , they car showed very well on the video so no harm or foul , and now you need to repair the Header pipes , thanks for showing your car fresh out of the paint shop and get Jay to help you re- shape the tubes.

When I got back from Vietnam in 1969 , I bought a brand new 442 off of the showroom floor at the local Olds dealer. It was one of the best cars I ever owned! Had to sell it in 1972 when I had to go back to Vietnam!

One of the few cars Jay has that I have actually driven. "Back in the day", avoid damp roads! Going sideways at 30 plus mph. No blood, no ticket. Now all they have to do is catch it on camera.

I had a '69 Cutlass Supreme , but had a dickens of a time finding parts . Turns out just as the supreme line was starting up , the workers went on strike and only 30 models were made . Things like 16" arm rests instead of the standard 14" were darn near impossible to find . Unfortunately , do to financial troubles , I had to sell it . Had it for 15 years . Had the 350 Rocket in it giving it 310 HP . But as you found out , it was a heavy car , 3800 lbs. Thanks for highlighting this beauty . I'd like to find another one . Take care and God Bless , Paul

I know there's a lot of folks here who are upset with Paul for putting a Chevy engine in his Olds, and I understand that. But remember- General Motors itself was swapping engines back and forth between divisions since the mid-late 1950s. By the mid 70s to early 80s, GM's game of Musical Engines reached mind-boggling proportions. What Paul did engine-wise isn't much different from what the factory itself was doing a few years after this 442 was built.

Christopher O. You're kind of right and kind of wrong. The musical engine thing didn't really pick up steam till the mid to late 70s (76-on) By the 80's GM had settled on the "corporate" motors meaning they took the small block Chevy for V8's, the Buick V6 and usually a Chevy 4 banger for economy cars. In the era of this 442, however, your engine matched the brand of the car. Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Chevrolet and even Cadillac all had independent development sharing only minor engine accessories like alternators and power steering pumps. You weren't going to find a Chevy motor even by accident in any olds in 1969. For one thing the engine mounts and details like the BOP rear-ends and transmission bell housings were unique to non-Chevy GM applications. GM divisions operated more independently than they do now. These days the only thing unique about most cars is the badge. How many rebranded Toyotas or Mitsubishi's were labeled Chevy for example. No, people can do whatever they want to their cars and I while understand all too well just how hard it is to get parts for a 400 or 455 Olds motor, this car is more of a resto-mod built to drive and have fun. As such it's not much good as a historical reference outside of its body shape. That's what gets the purists upset about it.

Agreed on all counts. The weirdest example I can think of is the '79-'81 Trans Am. When Pontiac ceased production of its own V8 engines, they started equipping leftover TAs with 403 Olds engines. When I attended auto shop classes at el Camino College back in the late 80's, a classmate's father purchased a brand new 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic wagon. It came with a 307 Olds motor. Another interesting one was the '89 ( ? ) Pontiac Trans Am Pace Car Edition with the 3.8 liter Buick turbo V6.

Christopher O. Yes, the Trans Ams from the late 70's to 81 had the some of the most varied engine options from multiple sources. The 400 Pontiac, 403 olds, 301 Pontiac (turbo to replace the 403) and in some years even a 305 chevy. My first car was an 81 V6 Camaro and my friend also had an 81 Camaro with a V6 except that mine was a 229 Chevy and his was the 231 Buick motor. By the end of the 80's the GM corporate motor edict was firmly in place. The only real exception to all this corporate stuff was Cadillac when they had their Northstar V8's. and engines like those weird 4.1 liter variable displacement V8's Their down-level cars like the Cimarron shared running gear with it's GM stable mates like the Cavalier and the Firenza. I also remember the awful corporate V6's like the 173Ci (2.8) that showed up in everything from trucks to Firebirds. At least these days the corporate motors aren't so horrendous. You buy a GM car, even a Caddy and you're going to end up with and LSx V8 or a variant of the venerable Buick 3,8 (in the 90's became the 3800 series of V6's) and even some awesome 4 bangers with a few foreign engines for the econoboxes many of which are just rebadged Toyotas.

the other thing too, is, if you want that amount of cubic inches and power, you likely aren't using an OEM block--probably a Dart block with relocated cam tunnel, Merlin heads with different valve angles, Scat or billet crank, Crower rods etc. So an engine in this class is probably about as "Chevy" as it is anything else. In the 1980's GM had an "olds" engine with "pontiac" heads for the pro stock and serious street racers.

I had a 1968 442, black with white stripes and white interior, four speed, burnt out cherry bombs, cutouts, and I would love to have it now! That was a LOT of car for a 17 year old boy and I burned the roads up with it. Sold it when I went into the US Air Force. One of many I'd love to have back! I'm a car guy and have had many. I always wanted a 1970 Chevelle SS, but never got it. I came across a nice 1971 and couldn't pass it up, so I currently have that one. If I had the money, I'd have a garage full...like you!

Love it. i drive my 68 pontiac with a 461 cubic inch motor every day. Nothing like the feel of an old real american car thats been updated a little and handles and stops great but hasnt been taken too far with gimmicks it doesn't need. Love that 60's muscle car interior

Congrats on the beautiful Olds! My wife owned a 69 Olds 442 when I met and married her in 81. Grey with blue stripes and vinyl top just like this one. Absolutely loved that car and still miss it to this day. Actually kick myself for not being able to find a way to keep it. We were in the Army at the time and no way and no money to safely store it when we transferred to Germany. Really hated having to let it go, but...

I saw a gold 69 for sale at Barrett Jackson, it went for 34k. Kicking myself for not getting it. So many great memories

That's what you get when you outfit a car with Hotchkis suspension. If it had chassisworks coilovers that wouldn't have happened. My car bottomed out all the time back when I had Hotchkis. And mine is almost 1000lbs lighter than that 442

Those old 442's were such sweet cars. Powerful, smooth, and sexy. '69 and '70 were probably the pinical years for quality at GM.

at 10:35 he talks about doing a 180....the day after i got my 69 442, i went down a country road with my older brother. and at a stop sign i did a 90 degree left turn...my brother saw a ford maverick with a hood scoop drive by on the road we were turning left on...now mind you, i am one day older than 16 and so i punched it while trying to make that left..i ended up on the embankment on the other side of the road. my bro looks at me and says "i will drive us home." my buddies in high school called that car "the coffin". i turned 16 in 1985.

One of my currently dormant project cars is a '72 Olds Delta 88 Royale convertible with the original factory drivetrain still in place. 455 Rocket 4-barrel engine mated to a Turbo 400 trans. Mine even has the rare optional cornering lights. I've replaced the worn out factory springs with heavy-duty stock replacement police / taxi spec springs. Next step is a set of heavy duty Bilstein shocks ( the yellow ones ), and some monster sway bars. I'm keeping the factory rims and hubcaps, though. That's all I'm doing to the chassis. Underhood I've installed a rebuilt stock Q-Jet carb and retrofitted GM HEI ignition. I even whipped up a custom cold air intake system that looks factory ( even though it's not ) . The last thing I'm doing under the hood is installing a set of mid-length headers. I'm not driving it right now due to a slipped timing chain and disintegrated convertible top. One thing at a time.

guguigugu Of course, it takes a certain type of road to bottom out. But stock cars come prepared for that. The rest of the traffic barely even notices it. Jay often takes the same route and this is the first time we've seen this happen.

Nice car Paul, the engine sounds awesome. And the fact that you have modified it so that it will turn and stop well, make it that much better. One of my uncles had a 442 when he was an older teen. I was a young teen at the time, he was adopted by my grands, thus the narrow age difference. I got to ride in the car soon after he completed the engine build, and that was one of the fastest accelerating cars I have been in, the fastest being a built Sunbeam Tiger. My uncle spent years on this car, and not a small amount of money. He lived in Corona California, and was a bit of a wild child, so he was usually tailed by the local police shortly after leaving his driveway. He had just made the decision to sell the car when he was t-boned at an intersection by someone who missed a red light. My uncle was not hurt, but the car was a loss. It was fun while he had it.

My first car was a '68 442 ragtop my father had bought off the showroom floor as an "Executive Package". I got it on my 16th B'day after they had it painted Carolina Blue. That was a great car. I liked how it lowered itself at about 75.

yeah, the first gen brakes were pretty bad--about Nova level. Didn't get much better until maybe 1969, and I own a 1968 with the front drums swapped to disc. Don't let looks fool you, Countach's aren't aerodynamic (in the .040-.050 cd range) and could weigh as much as 3500+lbs depending on the model. Pretty much equal to a GM A-body overall. Although i'd wager a A-body is probably more aerodynamic (mid - high .30 cd range maybe)

Loved it, you get the coolest guests. I was lucky enough, have owned three Olds Cutlass two rough shape '69 442 red body & Black interior, '70 "S" Light green in and out, then my best one a '72 Supreme blue out, with white top, black and white interior, all three 350 / automatics, the 442's had been changed.
