When I look at works of art from different periods in history, and look at many different artists, such as Goya, Botticelli, Matisse, Dali, Basquiat, to name a few, I don't do so with an attitude that I am somehow an elitist or better than others. i do so because I'm fascinated by human expression in as many ways as possible. Loving art is not a pissing contest between different styles and motivations. There is good and bad art from across the ages, and what makes good and bad art is a matter of the technique and intention of the artist meeting in a place where something interesting happens. Art is subjective, and there is no formula for a work of art's success.

I think the way people form opinions about art says a lot about their worldview and who they are as a person. In PJW’s case, I think his opinion on art kind of reveals how myopic his worldview is - he doesn’t know how to engage with works like Matisse’s, and instead of learning about the context behind the art he doesn’t understand, he forces it to fit inside the box he’s created for himself. He doesn’t understand it, he doesn’t care to, and therefore it’s bad. I absolutely think this mindset carries over to his other opinions, but I think that part is more controversial to argue since his opinions are very politically polarizing and that understandably tends to make people defensive. But yeah, this take from him is hilariously misinformed. And unrelated, but I also really appreciated the context you gave about Matisse’s paper cutout pieces. I think his work is beautiful but I didn’t know that about him, and it adds a layer of appreciation I didn’t have before. I stumbled into this video randomly but it gave me something to think about. Cheers!
