Thank you -- this is great. I do hear Russian style in the second movement, and to some extent in the fourth (diatonic melody, triadic harmony, slightly reminiscent of Russian Orthodox church music -- and peals of bells!)

Very interesting to follow this score. Paul Juon is without doubt a seriously neglected composer. This is very skillfully written for the instruments involved and also pleasant to listen to. Reading this music is a masterclass in late 19th century chamber writing. Thank you.

Einfach wundervoll!

You're totally right. First movement could conjure up early Stravinsky (when he was under Rimsky-Korsakov influence but also something of his neoclassical period that's already showing Stravinsky personal touch). This octet predates by some five years Stravinsky op 3/4 and is contemporary of his op 1 Symphony in E flat. Communicating vases of music ....

Such a nice mix of symphonic and chamber music colours (+valeurs & rhytmic impulses). A piece written exceptionally intelligently and elegantly. I like it so much. Thank you again!

Yes, another splendid late romantic work of Paul Juon, the genre of chamber music where he is absolutely masterful. Thanks, also for the notes, they are always greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting this. The opening movement is superb, and the sound of this recording is spectacular. Great instrumentation, wonderful music. I have to admit that I tired of the piece after the first movement -- the unrelenting energy and the sameness of mood eventually lost my interest-- but I would be interested in hearing more of Juon's music. I had not heard of him before now.
