I started building balsa wood kits in 1970 (Line control), I would build kits and repair kits almost every day and flying them on weekends. I continued to build line control and remote control planes up until 2002. Then in summer of 2022 I found a Guillow's P-40 kit at a garage sale for $5.00. This sparked my interest back into balsa kits. I started watching KZbin videos and decided that I want to build some Guillow's kits. I purchased 12 more kits over the next 6 months from buyers on auction sites. They are all older kits from the 1970's and 1980's. On Feb 01, 2023 I opened the Guillow's Hawker Hurricane and started construction. I am VERY impressed with the quality and preciseness of the kit! I am going to enjoy this very much. I plan on using the tissue paper method to cover the plane. I probably will not fly these planes, but who knows, maybe one of them will see the air. I just love the art of building balsa models. I love the history of this company. I even called and talked to someone there on Feb 09, 2023 and was impressed with how friendly and informative he was. You have a fan for life (FYI, I started when I was 13 in 1970, I am now past 66 in 2023), so I have quite a few years left in me.

Laser cutting made all the difference! You have to be patient and it doesn’t hurt to see someone experienced build one before undertaking a kit project solo. CA glue really speeds it up, but it has its quirks. They’re satisfying to build once you learn. I just wish that Cox still built their little glow plug engines.

In the late1950's, I used to live just down the street from Guillows and would occasionally stop in on a hot summer's day and ask for a drink of water. The folks in the office were most accommodating.

I built a lot of stick and tissue models before the first one flew. That one was a Guillow's 16 inch wingspan Spitfire. I build mostly R/C planes now, but still build a Guillow's kit on occasion.

Many of their models make fabulous electric conversion RC aircraft. I love their designs and the quality of the kits.

This company will turn 100 in a coup'le of years. Something almost incredible in these hard times we are living. And I'm sure Guillows will be around for at least another 100 years.

Just plunked down $181 through AC supply for two of their kits. Some of the best memories of my childhood. Wish they could find a way to offer some of the Comet kits that they aquired years ago. I miss the Taylorcraft series as well as the heavy-but- fun to build- "Tube-O matic" models.

There should be a museum of Paul K Guillows in Boston ! Has anyone thought about making these beautiful kits of more recyclable and environmentally friendly materials considering their popularity amongst generations ?

I have built most of their models. Some of them I have build several times for control line. Just wish they would expand the list for some different types. With today's small R/C systems, anything is possible.

I wish they would use lower density balsa consistently so that one has the confidence that each new kit will make a good free flight model.

Guillows models are great for making display models. If you want good duration it's probably a good idea to replace at least all the stripwood, except perhaps for leading edges. I suppose the harder wood suits younger builders, who would tend to break lighter wood when building. Maybe Guillows could put out "special edition" light-wood kits for those who want them. In the past Guillows kits would appear at the local K-Mart once every few years - and when they did there would be several shelves full of them. My favorite rubber powered "kits" were actually the little North Pacific stick models, especially the Star Flyer, since I was more into duration rather than scale looks. I could get my Star Fliers over the rooftops (and I lost a lot of them up in the trees).
