Kudos 2 U! . Excellent build and finish. Guillow's models can fly but they require extensive lightening ( as you did), better balsa and often a better airfoil design. ..and even then, they just are not great performers. I didn't know this as kid many eons ago and I built a lotta Guillow's klunkers (they do look nice static). Years later I got involved with Free Flight performance and was finally able to have models that really flew well.

I built a Guillow's Tommy Morse when I was a kid and it was tail heavy, too. I didn't have the skill or the knowledge to do what you did here, but I eventually got it to sort-of -fly. Such fond memories of that and the other ones like it.

I had a Thomas Morse as a kid - about 1986/7. Instead of rubber power, it had a Cox Pee-Wee 0.20 glo-plug engine an an eye-dropper fuel tank for about a 20 second engine run. It climbed like a rocket, glided like a brick.

Well done on your beautiful and accurate build. I always build in an extra hole for a shorter motor. It means you don’t have to add nose-weight for all that heavy rubber running to the tail. The shorter motor doesn’t usually add much flight-time, but it does make the whole model much lighter, and therefore less prone to damage. Also, it can more easily take advantage of a light thermal. Maxfliart shows how to make an adjustable angle nose assembly, if you haven’t made one already. Good luck!

I watched your video and enjoyed the attempts to make it fly using more weight to prevent the stalling. If I can suggest a solution to your broken landing gear. Attach the struts with small magnets so that it breaks free in landing without damage. Or you can use a wire on the front strut and create slots in the fuselage for the rear struts to extend into. It's a lovely plane done by a talented person. May you have many more flights!

Thank you for watching. And thank you for your advice. Also, I don't think there is enough weight to put on the model.

'Beautiful model! It appeared that the glide was good on the un-powered test - no stall, no dive. At that point, as long as you had rubber in during the test glide, your CG was likely OK. Since it was only under power that you got the climb and stall, the problem is thrust-line - the first thing you should have tried (assuming the CG was the same as it was during the successful glide test) was to add down-thrust. A good rule of thumb is this: get the glide right first, then trim powered flight using up/down and/or side thrust. That's a bit over-simplified, but a good place to start.

fantastic build and video. I'm making an RC-converted one currently and learned a lot wathcing this. I am not a freeflight guy, and could be completely wrong, but it seemed like the setup at 5:40 was the best. perhaps a bit of up-thrust with this tune would be ideal. When you added weight to the nose and up-trim to the elevator, it started to 'phugoid' oscillate pretty hard- a strong gust causes it to climb sharply, then it falls, then climbs again. even to your last flight 8:30 it is constantly stalling and then falling and then climbing and stalling over and over. do you intend for this to happen? I think the solution is to not add so much weight to the nose, that way you don't have to compensate with very much up-elevator, and then instead compensate for the climb with up-thrust

This is a very excellent build. How do you adjust down thrust and left or right thrust with this model? It seems that the vacuform engine's screw on attachment to the firewall would make thrust line adjustments difficult. Well done.

Beautiful build but after watching the break in flights I now understand the bottle of Jim Beam. Those nose high gentle stalls were enough to make me curl into ball, so lucky it pulled out as the landing wheels touched the ground......mostly. I so much did NOT want to see it auger in.

Beautifully built, needed some Down thrust also you said the cause of the crash was “down rudder” you mean down elevator surely? I know these premium Guillows birds are far trickier to trim right than their simpler range but well worth the extra effort. The more I watch the more I think she needs a bit more downthrust

The song asks a question and the answer is "Yes!", a resounding "Yes!", our flag does still wave. Celebrate that victory by singing loud and proud with a joyous tempo, not the dirge used here. 7:00 and 8:30 Maybe a little down thrust would help?
