A song without a chorus, written for a charity album by a brilliant storyteller and musician. Isn't it just plain BRILLIANT?

Very much like Don Walker, both brilliant song writers who played with style and the strophic non-chorus form of song structure.

Hi, thanks so much for pandering to our Australian sensibilities. Ok, musically, the song is nothing much, but lyrically, man, I'm 61, heard this song heaps, but the line where he asks his brother to kiss his kids on Christmas day, and don't let the cry for him.... And then when talking about his wife Rita, saying don't dance to close to her, don't stab him in the back, then he apologises, realising that it's the isolation affecting him... Wow, every time, every single time, my eyes water! Thank you for sharing so many stories this time, and I have to say, I don't believe I've ever seen you guys watch a video without pausing it before!! Merry Christmas guys, and thanks for the time you guys give, and the honest reactions.

Glad you could get the emotion of the song. I think this song resonates with Aussies because our country is so vast you can have family spread out and it’s not always possible to spend Christmas together. But then during covid it took on extra meaning.

The Co-Vid lockdown in Victoria, Australia was particularly severe and it was almost like being in jail. It lasted months and we were only allowed out for some quick exercise and shopping for essentials and were not allowed more than 5 kms from home. Thankfully, the result was a low death rate. Paul Kelly is from Melbourne in Victoria and is a master poet of song.

I'm pleased I watched this video, and to hear both your stories. I was also in tears as I watched your reaction. I can't imagine what it's like to show that vulnerable side of yourself to your subscribers, but thank you. This song is one of the tracks we play during our family Christmas gatherings. My husband is a Paul Kelly fan, and it's with his insistence that we hear this every year. It's played so often that we began taking the song's story for granted. It's about an imprisoned man writing a letter to his brother about missing Christmas celebrations with family. I could barely watch the 2021 video because of what lockdown was doing to me emotionally. I'm happy to say that I can now sit through the video now, and leave that period behind. Christmas cheers, Hayley

Hello my Cuzzie hay I'm glad our friends Chris and Cynthia show their emotions bottleling them in doesn't help anything I'm a Sook and don't care what people think if i get emotional about anything. Holding emotions back and not talking is a big part of why Aotearoa New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world it shouldn't be that way we live in the most beautiful place on earth. But it's the old harden up bloke thing that stops people talking about problems in their lives and not seeking help it's a really bad attitude Talk people Talk you will find people who understand and support you DEATH isn't the Answer

We share the same culture and values, seeing as we're geographical neighbours, so I do understand what you're saying about ''harden up bloke''. The fact it made you cry is the key to Paul Kelly's utter genius. I've heard this song countless times and I still cry on the odd occasion. FYI - Paul Kelly is not a chef but a poet, creative license granted. In Australia gravy is made more like you described but again Paul's genius is in the words because that gravy sounds more like prison food. Which is why it works and makes you cry...

I had a few tears as well as today would have been my older brothers 69th Birthday today, sadly he passed from cancer back in 2019. My parents passed in their 80's back in 2016 (Mum) and 2013 (Dad). You dont know how much you miss them until they are gone. Xmas without them always seems the hardest. This song is about a guy who has made some mistakes in life and is spending Xmas in jail. I think it was released in about 1986, real tearjerker for sure, Paul Kelly is Australia's answer to Bob Dylan, he has written a plethora of great songs so worthwhile checking him out in the future. Have a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, one and all! Lets hope 2024 is a better year than 2023.

Dad was 87 and Mum was 86, they both had a good innings so even though their loss is very sad, I can be thankful for their longevity. Also grateful in some respects they didnt have to experience Covid in some ways, I have too many friends whose elderly loved ones did it very tough. @@iankearns774 The lockdown caused me a lot of stress because I was my adult kids were away from home, and I couldn't see them. One being overseas. I also couldn't see my own parents, which got me very angry. Gillian also went through similar stress, but her worries were more for our parents and not knowing when she'll see them. Her kids are teenagers and still at home, so it's not like she had to worry about them. But one child (of mine) being overseas was really trying on my patience. I can imagine how tough it would have been for your friends to lose their own parents through Covid. I was certainly worried sick about mine. And yes, you are right. Melbourne was terrible in the way they treated covid, and I was very unimpressed with NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian. That woman was idiot. Anyway, to leave it on a nice note, again I say Merry Christmas to you, Ian.

Easy way to think about the song is its the musings of a bloke writing a letter to his family, he made some mistakes in life and is spending Xmas in Jail. I always think of gravy as a metaphor in a sense. Joe is in prison and he's sorry for what he did and how it affected the family, "Tell them all I'm sorry". Then he talks of making it up to everyone "You know one of these days I'll be making gravy, I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay them all back". Maybe he took money from family members? He's going to be out in 6 months (with good behaviour), stay straight and earn enough 'gravy' to repay what he took. Maybe, or, maybe it's just about the warm condiment for the roast.

I do not like gravy or tomato sauce but it still a nice song. I remember the craziness at height of lockdown here when there was a curfew at 8pm. If you were found driving on road you needed to have some essential workers letter to show any police. I was working overnight at time and remember at one point there was basically no cars on the road and I live in a city of 5 million people. I barely saw the cops on road either so never needed to show them any letter if they had of pulled me over. You were not meant to shop anywhere more than 5 kilometres from your residence for essential items and not meant to have any visitors at your residence. Cannot remember how long this went on but seemed about six months at the height of it. My Dad passed away in 2018 so glad he did not have to live through the crap. If he was sick in hospital on his last legs at that time it would have been horrible. Feel sorry for people that lost people they loved in this time period.

Paul usually puts you straight into the story in the first 'Paragraph' so to speak. He usually deals with family and Indigenous matters. The words in this version were changed a bit not to upset the Alphabet people. Gravy generally is made from reducing the left over 'juice' from the cooked meat. Adding flour, wine is fairly normal. Tomato sauce is probably an Aussie thing since we use so much of it.

It's the best upload of ''Moonlight Shadow'' on KZbin. It was a big hit in Europe and Australia, but I don't think it caught fire in North America and Canada. Should have...

In lock down i didn't get to Hug my three boys for a year different bubble but i was allowed to travel for work and I'd do their shopping in my full biohazard suit and drop it off on the table outside their door after wiping everything down first but they would stay inside until i was gone but it kept them safe and that's all that matters to me

Yeah, he not normally music I would listen to be he such a great writer and kind of a folk singer that cannot help but respect him and listen to anything that crosses my path. Jewel is a similar artist like that over in North America.

Australia suffered a very hard, long lockdown. Virtually 2 years, even traveling interstate. This is what makes this extra poignant. A lot of us missed significant events, personally a parents death. This is is a difficult listen

I’ve just spent a cool 2 hrs going back over your archive checking to see if you’d already played songs I’d like you to consider going forward Post crimbo.. 👀 The Clash - Guns on the roof The The - Uncertain Smile The Stranglers - Curfew Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce Green Day/U2 - The Saints are coming The Saints - I’m Stranded World Party - Ship of Fools Cactus World News - Years Later … Bit cheeky asking for that many but if you don’t ask you don’t get, I’d wager most tracks your not familiar with . If possible if/when you decide to play any of them if there’s a video for it great , if not then Top of The Pops or Old grey whistle test appearances , if not then the album cut please , I find on this medium that live gig cuts just don’t do the songs justice , just my personal preference tbh .. well cheers for hopefully considering them 👏 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Today is gravy day? You could cook a roast chicken out side in the heat of the day😮 i hate summer when is the toothless organisation the UN going to ban summer? I wish they would get to it yesterday it should be a crime against humanity anything over 20 degrees Celsius should be jailed 😊 . Paul Kelly is great I've seen him with the coloured girls with my dad about 35 years ago 👏👏👏 his vocals are beautiful no frills just great 👍

Paul isn't for everyone, but another song that has the potential to grab your heart at one point is Deeper Water. There's a few versions, but I'd suggest this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmTRimmIhK1mgasfeature=shared Like most Paul Kelly songs, the music is simple, and his vocal delivery is quasi Dylan/Springsteen, but the lyrics are where he shines so focus on the story if you can.

C n C , might as well get hung for a sheep as well as a Lamb .. 👀 May I suggest a mega “ who did it better ? “… The Beatles - Hey Bullfrog Fanny - Hey Bullfrog .. yes I’m aware legions of Brits n Aussies just choked on their cornflakes there 😅, but not only are they a real band but they’re bloody good too ! IF you do it please can you make the Fanny cut the live one they did for a German tv show with a vivid “ blue screen “ behind them ?
