Jess has such a clean voice, so much natural ping in it and she’s not trying too hard to be super loud or powerful, it just stands out. I love it.

I just had a look at a biography and I could see if she was an opera singer, which explains some of the technique I saw where she was able to belt out with power at the beginning without opening her mouth very much. Just pure support and clean forward placement. Not that there’s anything wrong with an open mouth for a belt, and she did have a little more head voice in it than the usual belt anyway. But it does show her classical training. Just so beautiful and bright.

Fabulous. Paul Kelly is an amazing songwriter, storyteller and poet. Love the way his lyrics interlock everything from everyday life to Shakespeare to the bible to famous poets. Good honest songs. If he is not australias greatest singer songwriter he must be way up there. Jess Hichcock is brilliant. Listened to him for years and hopefully many more.

I was at the Sydney Domain concert for this performance right up front (you might catch a glimpse of me at ~1:50) and it blew me away. The song still does. I have watched and listened to this so many times (including the original version with Dan Sultan). This is a hauntingly beautiful & powerful song and Jess's singing on this live version is absolutely amazing.
