The blue, red and beige colours in the 1930 version looks so adoring and charming. Also the green box deck in the middle looks fantastic. It would be perfect if it had the sailor blue, wine red and soft beige colours from 1930 deck. Thank you for showing this classic, historical decks!// Love and light from Sweden 🙏✨❤

Very interesting! After many years of working with reproduction decks, I finally saw the beauty of these Grimaud decks, and now feel Marteau has been unfairly maligned. I like the 40's deck the best, and the green box and the htf brown box, with their thick, bygone card stock. These decks often have one recto and verso darker than the rest of the deck due to exposure to the acid content of the box and/or booklet. Since these decks have been so continually popular, I believe they trigger a communal consciousness response more so than lesser seen decks.

I have a red deck in English that I got around 1972. One interesting thing about this is Grimond had a kind of display rack they sent to the store with several of the decks they offered at the time. The Ettailla, Leonormand, book of destiny ect. Wish I'd bought them all! I saw a 30s deck in England which my friend bought for about fifty dollars. (This was the Eighties) Like you I'd love to see a 30 deck or a good repo of it if someone will ever redo it. The Marteau deck is an important Esoteric deck and was the only one available back when I bought mine. Its criticized some today by people who go back to total ect but it is extremely important as an occult tool

I'm so in love with this old Blue/Turquoise from 1930 Paul Marteau ! since I have this deck I can't go back to those saturated colors. I feel you ! (Pushing Grimaud rn to get back to the old "version" xD)

First of all,......How did I miss this after so long? Great comparison, Justin. I laid out several of my own decks to compare along. It was such fun! My green box is in French. No DEATH written on the card. There were so many different editions and printing swirling around as you know. There are some vintage I wouldn't buy,.... like the ones with BOTH English and French titles as they cropped off or manipulated the images to compensate for the bigger bottom area with printing. Then there are the weird backs that are black with a strange design like a sun or a flower or something. Really ugly. All from the same Carta Mundi though. The colors of your basket weave early deck are slightly different and a bit darker than the original. But so close to the 1930. I like the basket weave backs. As for the darker blues, the one thing I like about some of the vintage with darker blues is that the reds are more red and not that orange they resorted to. The yellows got more mustardy over time and I prefer the more lemon yellow but those printings are harder to fine. More truly primary monochromatic red, yellow, and blue. I really do not like the mass market 2024 printing and prefer the later vintage ones from the 80's and forward like you showed. Why do modern decks look worse and garish across the board if the printing is more sophisticated? And so heavily laminated! Those thick decks have held up tremendously well over the decades. But I'm sure I'm more sensitive to color and feel than most people and they are easier to please! I looked up the symbolism of the Tulip flower. The first meaning is Love and the second is Rebirth. I wonder if they chose the tulip suggesting that the 4 of Deniers means love of money. Such a great video, thanks. Anne

Enjoyed this. The info at the start was interesting and loved seeing the comparison. Its cool to see how the colours have changed over time. This was quite timely cos I just got a red box yesterday. For a very decent price I should add :)

Thanks Chris!! Ah you got a red box deck. Let me know what you think when you get it and how it compares. I love it but just like a lot of other oop decks it’s way over priced 😂 Glad you got a wee deal They are cool in their own way. Vintage paper. 💙

I agree the gold gilded deck is really nice. Im tempted but its nearly 40 quid. I have 2 grimauds and another on the way so I can't really justify getting a fourth (can I?) 😅🤣

Thanks Richard!! The gilded version is really pretty! I love the square cut corners. Get it from French Amazon. That’s where I found it cheap I wish the paper was a tad better. It’s on the thin side. 😘

Beautiful decks! I can almost feel the weight of the decks as you describe the stock. I love this part of your collection. I’m still working on the study of tarot in the esoteric Western Mystery traditions and have decks that I have written notes, correspondence, attributions, etc., but they’re all mass produced decks available most everywhere. Some are special for various reasons, but the decks you show here are very special to us as enthusiastic tarot lovers. I could never use them for reading - I’d be too concerned about damaging them - but I hope to find a deal at the right time and get a vintage collection started. Great share as always, throwing cards in Baltimore!

Thanks man.. yes I stopped riffle shuffling my vintage.. believe it or not my friend told me that gently riffle shuffling is better than over hand suffering in terms of preserving cards. I decided not 😂 my post war deck feels brand new.. one card has a slight scuff.. but I do read with it occasionally. The way I see it is these are decks I will never sell. I may as well enjoy them.. thanks for watching. Next time I’m in Baltimore I’ll give you a holler 💙☘️

@@justinmichaeltarot Right on! Gentle riffle, with the slightest flex, seems to be easier on the cards than the constant friction of hand over hand. I have my first deck from several years ago and it is trimmed due to that lesson. Can’t wait for the next Titans of Tarot, it’s gonna be good! Best wishes in all you’re endeavors!

Regarding the SM appearing on The Chariot card, Kaplan's Enyclopedia of Tarot Vol II (p 516) has a reference entry: Grimaud, B.P. Tarot of Marseilles. Paris: B.P. Grimaud/J.M.Simon/France Cartes, 1969 48 pp. Booklet accompanying Tarot of Marseilles. J.M.Simon is also noted on 1964 Tarot Arista booklet B.P. Grimaud1964. Not sure if the J.M.Simon contributions date back to the 30s ...? Anyhow great video. I really love these because there's always a history lesson.

Yes!! Wow good for you. Very lucky. I often see decks listed as 1930s but they are missing Fleur de Lis etc. I have yet to find one. The card stock on the 1930 is the same as the 1940s deck. Thank you my friend

If you want this deck with more authentic colours it’s worth taking a look at Grancher publication by Colette Silvestre.

@@justinmichaeltarot It is the best I’ve see. It’s not expensive. Card stock is slightly thicker than Yves Joerger 1801 Tarot.I tried posting its barcode number but it gets removed. I hope you’ll find it. 🙂
