Very interesting! After many years of working with reproduction decks, I finally saw the beauty of these Grimaud decks, and now feel Marteau has been unfairly maligned. I like the 40's deck the best, and the green box and the htf brown box, with their thick, bygone card stock. These decks often have one recto and verso darker than the rest of the deck due to exposure to the acid content of the box and/or booklet. Since these decks have been so continually popular, I believe they trigger a communal consciousness response more so than lesser seen decks.

@@justinmichaeltarotit is the alternative, esoteric, tarot association, based on Éliphas Lévi or Crowley (depending if major or minor). So for this card, it has the earth symbol (which is pentacles) and 07 - so it means that this card is the 7 of pentacles using the alternate tarot association. It’s different naming and ordering than the typical tarot we are used to such as RWS. Hopefully that makes sense 😊

I've had this for quite a while, but I really didn't like its system of the minors. I've personally settled on a system of qabalah-related numerology with Golden Dawn added on top for details. The pips and the courts seem to imply elemental combinations (suit + planet for pips, suit + rank for courts) which can flow very interestingly for an open reader. The second book about the majors of the deck is fantastic, and informs a lot about Wang's choices of symbols. I didn't get the third book because I don't jive with his system of cardinal signs for the suits and planets for numbers. What did you think about the third book (Perfect Tarot Divination)?
@annerobinson22885 ай бұрын
First of all,......How did I miss this after so long? Great comparison, Justin. I laid out several of my own decks to compare along. It was such fun! My green box is in French. No DEATH written on the card. There were so many different editions and printing swirling around as you know. There are some vintage I wouldn't buy,.... like the ones with BOTH English and French titles as they cropped off or manipulated the images to compensate for the bigger bottom area with printing. Then there are the weird backs that are black with a strange design like a sun or a flower or something. Really ugly. All from the same Carta Mundi though. The colors of your basket weave early deck are slightly different and a bit darker than the original. But so close to the 1930. I like the basket weave backs. As for the darker blues, the one thing I like about some of the vintage with darker blues is that the reds are more red and not that orange they resorted to. The yellows got more mustardy over time and I prefer the more lemon yellow but those printings are harder to fine. More truly primary monochromatic red, yellow, and blue. I really do not like the mass market 2024 printing and prefer the later vintage ones from the 80's and forward like you showed. Why do modern decks look worse and garish across the board if the printing is more sophisticated? And so heavily laminated! Those thick decks have held up tremendously well over the decades. But I'm sure I'm more sensitive to color and feel than most people and they are easier to please! I looked up the symbolism of the Tulip flower. The first meaning is Love and the second is Rebirth. I wonder if they chose the tulip suggesting that the 4 of Deniers means love of money. Such a great video, thanks. Anne

@InnerMagpie7 ай бұрын
My first TdM was the Le Veritable by Hadar. The card stock is a let down for what it cost. My favorite is the jodorowsky because of the vibrant ultra marine almost purple design on the backs, second is a vintage Fournier Spanish tarot. I have really enjoyed listening how you explained each deck according to the history. My next deck I would like vandenborre version. I love the checkered borders….

1440's actually, although your dating does allow for the influence of Ficino. The Sun is Eos/Aurora & her two sons Emathion & Memnon, one who built the walls of Babylon to keep darkness at bay & who died for who Eos cried the tears that are the morning dew, the card represents Dawn or a dawning. The Tarot wasn't invented to represent a particular teaching as all the images go way back before being put together as the Tarot, although I do agree artists of the Renaissence would have had a interest & knowledge of mythological symbolism & Neo-Platonism.
