I'm assuming that bass is a Chinese copy, have you made any upgrades on the bass pick ups and the like and can you tell me what strings you have they're not flat wounds that Paul used are they. Thank you for this one i'll have a crack at this one it's the early 70's and late wings bass you don't really see on You tube.

Taking clues from the truss rod cover and the control panel and noting the lack of a zero fret, I'd say it's a Höfner Ignition. It's not really fair to call it a Chinese copy because it has the blessing of Höfner and is subject to their quality control; it just isn't made in Germany. So, it's more like a Japanese Fender or a Sterling StingRay than a knock-off copy. The black volume knobs suggest it isn't the SE version, which comes with "teacup" knobs and a Höfner decal on the body top. I understand the "staple" pickups are pretty good and are probably made in Germany and in true Macca fashion only the neck pickup is in use. There isn't a lot to be gained by swapping them. I understand Paul used Höfner branded flatwound strings and seldom changed them. Judging from the steel blue colour of the silks, I'd say that Lefty is using LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass flatwound strings, which are a popular choice and vastly preferable to the nasty roundwounds they're strung with at the factory. The quality of the materials is good - it has a spruce top and a bookmatched flame maple back, with maple sides and neck. The fingerboard is jatoba which, like pau ferro, is a good alternative to rosewood. The finish isn't as perfect as that on a German made 500/1 but the tone is wonderful and at the price it's a steal.
